"I think someone should just go ahead and SHUT THEM DOWN." Nah, I wouldn't go that far. But it's in poor taste. On a related note, so too is the endless references to "Anzac spirit" by sport commentators. I must've heard the term five times during the Swans vs Demons clash, and it angered me. They have it every year in GayFL to show respect to the fallen soldiers. You'd better get used to it if you're complaining now.

It technically isn't Anzac day here yet... But I give my feelings to the people lost in the war... I was in Australia last Anzac day, and I slept in really late, when apparently it's tradition to get up about 6am to commemorate it... So I'll give my feelings this year... And a special remembrance to the best Anzac around... John Simpson Kirkpatrick ... Local boy ... |

I like what they do at the start of AFL matches (please don't call it GayFL.... I might not be an AFL fan, but I don't believe in making that kind of bigoted joke either. Call it "Aerial Ping-Pong" if you must) and the start of any other sport that is on ANZAC day. Why? Well, I don't think we should all just STOP because it's ANZAC Day. Most of Australia doesn't, why should the AFL? However, I do think that they should show respect, as the rest of Australia does, and so they do. Course, the commentators DO go on a bit, but commentators do that with EVERYTHING. (Football, Cricket, Swimming, etc, etc, etc....). Just do what I do and turn music up so you can't hear the Commentators and then watch the game |

But Aussies also celebrate Remembrance Day, no? Respect is fine. A moment of silence, maybe a small ceremony, and then on with the game/event/whatever. Happens on every holiday like that. |

No we don't celebrate Rememberance day, that is an american tradition. ANZAC Day is to remember the Aussies and New Zealanders who fought in the war.

Ah, all right. I would have thought that there'd be a common mourning day for the Commonwealth countries myself...

Tinzeee, what are you talking about? We do have Rememberence day - November 11, a.k.a. Armistice Day. It isn't a public holiday but there's the traditional minute's silence and all that. The Americans don't even do "Rememberence Day" as such. They call it "Veteran's Day" and it seems to be less about WW1 specifically than veterans in general. So yes, Colleen, we do mark Rememberence Day. It isn't a public holiday though. |

My father has gone back to Vietnam for ANZAC day. He runs tours of the battlefields but this tour is always a special one for him. He was a soldier in the Vietnam war, and my grandfather was a POW at a japanese camp in WW2.

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up. It's not a holiday here either yet we do observe it and sell a crapload of poppies. |
