This is weird.
A couple days ago my mouse started to stop working whenever it felt like it. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and it worked just fine. This has been happening increasingly over the past few days, and its really pissing me off. I have found that if I poke sharp objects into the laser, it starts working again.

I'm not totally dumb, so I've been thinking maybe my laser has worn out. I can go buy a new one. Easy peasy... But today my keyboard started doing the same thing. This time, though, I can't simply unplug my keyboard. I have to restart the whole thing.

Is there something wrong with my external devices here? Have my keyboard and mouse just died at the same time?

On another note, I have been trying to install my old mouse on Windows to see if that improves the situation, but I have had no luck. How the hell do you install a mouse?

Please help with my keyboard/mouse troubles! Its very annoying.

When my mouse acts up, I find blowing on the laser helps. Crud gets in there. Though it sounds like your motherboard may be having some problems... any random crashes or weird bugs popping up lately?

There haven't been any random crashes or bugs lately. It could be because the majortity of my computer is four years old. My mouse is USB, and I find hitting it on the table helps. The laser turns completly off, and when I get it going again, Windows makes that 'hardware just plugged in' sound.

Perhaps it is your USB port, as HyperHacker said.

Do you have a USB keyboard too? Any other USB devices acting up?

You might try another port as well. My front USB ports have a similar problem; anything plugged into them shows up as an unrecognized device and Windows just shuts it off, but the back ports work fine.
