So, now that it's been awhile with my job, and I've got a good amount of money, I think I could afford a lot of the requirenments that are needed to build an SNES game, by putting a rom image over it, and so forth.

I'm just basically really interested in building cartridges of some rare, and unreleased titles like Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia, and so on.

The thing is, I am pretty much entirely clueless as to where to even start.

All I can really say is that I've got an NTSC system, and would probably be making them out of NTSC (US) carts.

So, is there anyone here willing enough to help me out? ...

Not really, but I can point you to Cherryroms, I read that they're supposed to be able to help you in their hardware forum, or something similar to that.

Not too helpful, but it's a step in the right direction.

The easiest method is to get a cart that has whatever hardware your game uses (eg for a Mario Kart hack, use a DSP-1 cart, preferrably a Mario Kart cart), remove the ROM chip and put a flash ROM/EEPROM in its place. Problem is you need to figure out the pinout of the original chip, and wire up the new one to match it, which can be tricky. Also, you need a way to write your new ROM onto the chip; most people choose to simply use a socket and cut a hole in the case so they can pull the chip right out and stick it in a writer, but depending how your cart is set up, you may be able to adapt a spare SNES to be one that writes the chip in-cart. Or, you could simply add a parallel port wired to the chip's address and data lines, with some simple circuitry, so that you could flash the chip in-cart through your parallel port. You'd most likely need to write your own software though.

If you can't get that figured out, you may find it easier to buy a simple breadboard (like a circuit board, but no traces, and full of holes to stick components in) and make a cart from scratch. If you do this I suggest you cut the bottom part of the original cart's mainboard off and put it in yours, that way you don't need to make the connector. This becomes more difficult as you add more stuff - with a ROM-only game, it's generally pretty easy, but ROM-only SNES games are uncommon (most have a bit of SRAM, and a lot of SNES games use expansion chips).

If your cart is designed that it can write to its own 'ROM', one method you may enjoy is making it a multicart. The first program, which would start at bootup, would be a combination menu/updater - it selects the game, and can download a new ROM from the PC (how you connect the SNES to the PC is up to you) and write it onto the cart. This way, you need not build/buy a writer; you can simply borrow one (or in some cases, use an existing one - try using the BIOS chip off an old motherboard; you can use a BIOS flash utility to write your loader program to the chip, so long as the chip currently contains a working BIOS for the board). Then once your program is in place, you can flash using the SNES itself, and not have to disassemble the cart or build a writer (unless, of course, your program fails or becomes corrupt).

Finally, keep in mind two key points:
1) Your cart need not look fancy or authentic; it need only do its job. If you plan to modify the cart a lot, you may be better off having the main board outside of the cart itself, bare, with only wires inside the cart connecting the board to the SNES. It won't look pretty, but it'll make things easier.
2) You're only limited by what the console can do and what you can do. SNES is great for expansion chips, and you need not stick to the ones used in commercial games. You can build an Athlon XP 3000+, MP3 player, toaster, or whatever the hell you want into the cart, so long as you're capable of it. (Of course, you'll need to add support to any emulators you intend to use. ) Just keep in mind the SNES's limitations (and cooling if you're going with those wacky ideas ), and go nuts!

Hmmm, I really confused myself here ...

I mainly meant to ask, how I would go about putting a rom into a cartridge. Not really build one from scratch, but just putting a rom unto a cartridge if I could.

Don't know if that makes any difference to the situation here or not, but yeah.

Edit: If someone wants to edit this thread title, go ahead. Very misleading, sorry about that. ...

I know exactly how to do it, and i have modified my cart and all, but my eeprom programmer cant seem to program it without errors. Oh well, maybe ill have to buy another one.

Like I said, open cart, remove ROM, insert rewriteable pseudo-ROM. Basic soldering really; the trick is mapping the pins correctly (and in some cases, working with FRICKIN SMALL components, not usually on SNES though).

Perhaps this site helps you a bit: http://snesdev.romhack.de/

There are various different tutorials on this site showing how to build your own Secret of Mana 2-cart / Starfox 2 / etc...

Really neat!!!

Haha, brilliant. Their copyright and logo crap ruins a bunch of the diagrams.

Just get the Super Flash 64M Cart from Tototek.
Here is the seller:
http://tototek.com/

Here is a detailed page about the kit:
http://www.tototek.com/pio/main1/SUBMENU/PARTS/LINKS/OS/superflash.htm

It lets you write ROMs to the cart via a parallel port and a special circuit board that comes with the kit. The cart circuit board itself can be placed inside any SNES or SFC cart shell. Since it uses flash RAM chips, you can rewrite games over and over again. Also, the programmer board can be used to dump carts and save games to your PC.

Simply put, that's freaking sweet.

Kind of the easy way out, but hey, that really helps. I'll probably get one and try it out here within the week or so. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks a lot.
