My two cents: People are fuckwits. (Or at least some people are) I'm gonna share with you a little story about my family and former friends.. My father had several toes amputated when I was growing up. And some fingers. And later his leg. He used to joke about it, and he was given the joke nickname of "Stumpy". My Dad was pretty good-humoured about the whole thing, he'd joke about stuff, and he didn't mind being "Stumpy" or anything like that. And everybody I knew growing up seemed so good about the whole thing with my Dad that I didn't really see how ugly people can be about these things till later. Years later. I was watching a TV show with my ex and his friends a few years ago, and there was some medical show on. There were a lot of amputees on the show. And I listened in HORROR as these grown men and women started LAUGHING and pointing and calling these people on TV "Freaks" and making jokes and whatnot. In the end, I flipped out. I couldn't handle it. All these people laughing then were people I had known most of my life at the surf club, and I knew that they all would've known my father when he was alive too, as he did work around the surf club when he was well enough (he was a welder, and he made a trailer for the surf boat and another trailer for the junior surfies equipment and such). He was a good person, trying to help even though he was sick and stuff. He was a well-known figure at the surf club, I wondered if they'd treated him the same way behind his back. So, I stood up, grabbed the control and muted the TV and went off at them. "Is this the way you saw my father? He was an amputee too you know, did you all laugh at him behind his back too? Are you all that low you can't see these people as HUMAN BEINGS, you have to laugh at them? Does it make you feel good to laugh at amputees, to laugh at sick and injured people? You all make me sick!" I stormed out, I think they laughed at me. I didn't care, I was too pissed off and too horrified at their actions. My ex tried to comfort me about it later that night, but he had an alterior motive. He didn't really care why I was upset. I don't spend any time with those people any more. I'm disgusted by them all. In fact, I don't think I've seen any of them in 18 months or more. Thing is, I know that it's not just those people that laugh at that kind of thing. Best I can do... is try to ignore those people... they're the fuckwits. I'd rather surround myself with people who don't think it's funny to laugh at others' misfortune. Bleh, I'm probably offtopic, huh? |

You're not off topic, this is a very good example of people. I know that I had quite a few friends before the accident, and after, they remained friends on the outside, but they were really laughing at me on the inside. I caught them talking about it once, and ever since then, they quit doing it... behind my back. They then did it to my face. I don't care, I'd rather have people around me that really are my friends than just act like it. That's prolly why I've only got one, but she doesn't care about my leg, becasue we both know that it's nothing to even be concerned about. All it is is a physical disadvantage, and not a very big one since metal and plastics are a lot better than flesh. blood, and bone.

Don't worry about them. They are just trying to get you upset. If you make no reaction to it, they will eventually stop. It just isn;t fun to try to pick on someone when they are failing at it. I'm not exactly the most popular person, and was/am pick on a lot, but I no longer allow myself to be provoked. I've made a lot more friends since I started not responding to insults, and people have been making fun of me less and less. You always have a few people that just absolutely hate you for no reason, and you can't change that, but most people can be swayed by not reacting. One thing, though: If they are not physically harming you or threatening your health/ people you are close to's heatlh, do not bring it up with an adult. This will just encourage them, because they will know that they are getting to you. Anyway, it must suck to be missing a foot... ... I've had wquite a few physical problems making it quite painful to walk at times (but i've never told my parent, and nobody's diagnosed anything, though my friends have noticed....) But losing a foot must be really hard.. Then again, you make it sound like it wasn't terrible.. Is it hard? Just wondering, you know. |

Well, besides having to spend my entire summer learning how to walk again, it was ok. There were some hard times, but I eventually overcame them. I remember one day, I had done too much walking, and my stitches came out and the stump split open. I had to go into surgery again, this time with staples in the stump. It kinda looked like Jaws, but when they pulled them out it was hell. I have scars all over my body, on my chest, on my neck (which luckily wasn't taken off, though the juglar came close to being cut), my arms, my right foot, and some in various other places. Losing a foot has affected the physiology of the stump very strangely, like, if I try to wiggle my toes, my stump muscles flex. In this way, I can make the stump "smile" "frown" and shake like its having a spasm. I don't consider myself disabled. I am better than before in my opinion. Titanium and plastics work much better than the original version. This has given me great interest in biomechanics and cybernetics/bionics. I did want to become a prostheticist and work on neurally controlled prosthesis' but I don't know anymore. Some say cybernetics will never work, but I think that they will someday let people like me experience full restoration of the limb function without bulky computers and fatiguing weight. I hope that cybernetics will achieve this someday, if not for our generation of amputees, but maybe for the next. |

Well, I'm glad you overcame that problem. Hopefully oneday they will coem up with a true solution to such a terrible accident. Who knows, it could be you that makes the cure, if you do go into that branch of science. Good luck, anyway.

I want to be a writer now. Prosthetics should be left to smarter people. There really is no "cure" for amputees, but we can compensate. I would rather write about things I love than work in a laboratory all the time. That's just how I am. I did notice somethign though; a lot of people who are prostheticists are amputees. Just a thought.

wing is a fun career. It is always a good way to channel your emotions, as I have found. I'm not a great writer, but when I do write I can use my charicter to fight through whatever i'm dealing with. Right now for example. I could have an Insomnistic character and channel my frusteration through him.. Anyway, I think that writing is a great career, and if you like it, you should try writing some smaller stories now. Post it on a website like fanficion.net, and see what response you get.. Just a suggestion, though.

Hey, you have a talent, use it, and show all of those good-for-nothings out there what you can do. Dispite your.... (for lack of a better word) "handicap"... you probably have twice as much potential then all of those other people who claim you have a problem. I know people who are physically, or mentally handicapped, and theyve beat those "jerk" types right into the ground.(not literally, success wise) Anywho, glad to hear youre overcoming day-to-day problems.... good luck in your future. |

My "talent" at writing is ok, but I don't think I am using it the best I can. I write a littlem but not nearly enough. Writing is one thing no one can discriminate against because of my foot. That affects it in NO way. Thus, writing is the thing I do best.

Originally posted by Cthulhu Surely you have figured out by now that everyone likes unity. We all have to be the same apparently, so we like to set a "norm" and then make everyone try to be that. And at the same time, we are encouraged to think for ourselves. Yea, I know, it doesn't make sense to me either. And I dunno why someone would PICK on you for it... most of the time people normally try to avoid eye contact with someone who is different physically (based on my experience with lots of other peoples). They wouldn't dare make fun of someone for their disabilities. If they are doing that, THEY are the un-natural ones. I mean, most people would either try to be nice to you or merely ignore you. |

I actually would rather be ignored. But hey, friendly is good too, even though I'm quite unsociable. |
