| Garfield is the ultimate marketing strategy... Garfield has provided newspapers across the world with a neverending supply of bland, inoffensive humor that everyone can relate to. Most often it will induce a light chuckle in someone, or a smile, or in rare cases a full-fledged hyuck. The humor is broad, and many jokes or schticks are often repeated with slight variations in order to show that Davis (who actually contributes less and less each day to the comic writing process) can still "wow 'em" with humor. Garfield himself, for example, is a character that will remain static for years to come, no matter what happens to him. He will never change, he will never undergo some kind of life-altering ordeal, because he is not meant to. He is meant to give us a reflection of our own fat, lazy selves, and to make us feel better about it. One could say that Garfield is one of the things that inhibits the world and keeps it from achieving its true potential, but one could also be absolutely insane. Nobody really knows, and because Garfield has never caused any trouble or controversy, nobody will EVER question its existence. Davis himself was a businessman. Forget the story you heard from him, he created Garfield purely as a moneymaking venture. A simply-designed, easily drawn character that can be placed in many situations that are all essentially the same: Cat goes somewhere, cat eats/drinks coffee/sleeps/makes disarmingly pleasant wisecrack/irritates owner. What comes from it? Gigantic balloons at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Napkins. A cartoon show. Books, movies, video games, little stuffed animals that you stick on your window despite Garfield never actually doing that. Ever. Davis even proposed to have a special bookstore rack designed for his books so that they could be read from side to side when they were read and still stored on shelves in a way that didn't cause them to fall off due to imbalance. This in and of itself is another moneymaking venture: Design it, patent it, sell it to consumers. Genius, no? And what are we? We eat. We drink coffee. We sleep. We try to engage others with our wit. We piss people off. The bottom line is that Garfield will never truly lose, and neither will Davis, because he has created a being that can withstand the test of time by adapting to the styles of the humans that can stand to stomach him long enough to be humored by him.
