| http://openoffice.org/ Well, it's released today... at least the English one. Most language translations are still on their way. There's tons of new features in OOo 2, and they'll probably be obvious if you've used previous versions. Perhaps the biggest one is the usage of the OpenDocument format by default, a format developed by an external organisation for the purpose of interopability between various applications, as it's not unknown that each application typically has its own format, and sharing between them got messy. If you prefer the older StarOffice format used in OOo 1.x for any reason (eg, you have OOo 1.x clients in your business, school, home, wherever), you can still save and open documents in that format. Another biggie is that the user interface was facelifted to look a lot more like Microsoft Office, not only helping users migrate to OpenOffice, but it's plain easier to use for everyone. |

| Actually, it can open and save Microsoft Word (.doc & .dot), Excel (.xls & .xlt), and PowerPoint (.ppt & .pot) with a fairly good success rate. It's not perfect, but that's pretty hard to achieve when firstly they must be reverse engineered, and secondly they're basically memory dumps. It might surprise you when OpenDocument actually tends to be even smaller on disk than the older StarOffice format it used in 1.x. Because even the StarOffice format is multitudes smaller than MS Office. Instead of say... a 900KB Word .doc file for only 23KB of text; StarOffice (.swc) would take around 12KB, and OpenDocument about 8KB. If you think it's just crazy optimization, tell that to the millions of people that are still using floppy disks. |

| Hmm... explain the "format painter" in MS Word, I haven't used that program in a long time, and OOo seems to map F4 to some weird database thing Equation support: OpenOffice.org Math seems to have all the math formatting things that you could want/need. Yeah, you can integrate it into a word processing document. Insert->Object->Formula Header/Footer: OOo allows you to edit them by simply clicking them. | format painter is basically, you format a set of text via the font menu, then by selecting another set of text, pressing F4 repeats your formatting. Or, if you format a paragraph to have before space, pressing F4 makes your next paragraph have the same formatting. I never found a key or a command to do that in the old open office. the last time I used headers and footers in openoffice, there was no support for tabs on the ruler and the margins had to account for the header/footer instead of them being inclusive in the margin regions so I hope that is improved. How is internationalization support? Last time I used openoffice, I couldn't type in Japanese in either the word processor or in spreadsheet  |

| hmm, I just tried out that F4 thing in MS Word... doesn't seem to do what you said. It just repeats the entire document over. And yeah, the old OOo header/footer system was a pain, but I find MS Word to be equally troublesome. Version 2.0 really helped a lot of things, headers/footers included. Oh, and internationalisation should be just fine if you have the appropriate libraries installed. That said, I've never had a need yet to use it. |
