Thanks to my accounting class and being bored and looking up things at Wiki, I discovered that Thunder Force IV did get a US release, under the name of: Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar.

Thunder Force IV is, quite possibly in my opinion the best side scrolling shooter known to man, next to Gradius III. The music is absolutely unbelievable coming from the Genesis, think Genesis epic Metal. The graphics, and character detail is also just beyond it's time.

I'm so glad I found this game, and ordered a copy off of Amazon. Copies are being sold for under $10 folks, over at Amazon, quite possibly the best deal I've ever seen (well, I did get Gradius III for $5 also. ).

So yeah, maybe you knew this, maybe you didn't. Regardless, if you're a classic fan of old games, or a side scrolling fan, this game is something you should absolutely not miss out on.

I've had the game for a while now, got it last spring pretty cheap. I still wonder why they changed the title for the US version, as Thunder Force was already an established franchise and would logically have contributed to more sales if they kept the original name.

I wrote a review for the game, available at Sega-16:

The American title for that game is atrocious! It soundsa like a B-movie.

NE ways I've known about TF IV for a while, having owned it first time round. Hellfire's pretty good too.

...I've had that game since the mid 90's! I just thought of it as another R-Type....obviously I was wrong!

*digs old genesis out*

Yes, "Lightening" is a word, but I don't think that's the one they should have used...

Never played the series, heard it was good, adding it to the list that I hope you never see because it's so long.

Yeah, that's what I don't understand either.

Thanks to my friend seeing the game, I got Thunder Force II recently for ... $1.99. Yeah, it just must be one of those very, extremely unknown and underated series.

I also picked up Thunder Force V, for $17.99. So right now, you could say I'll own them all except for the first one, but I'd really like to get my hands on the Genesis version of TFIII (even though I own Thunder Spirits, the SNES port).

Colleen: Yeah, if you're a fan of the shooters, R-Type, Gradius, and so on, this entire series is not to be missed out on. I'd go as far as to say that I personally like this series more than R-Type (I just like how Gradius and Thunder Force are a little more faster paced than R-Type), but that's me.

Oh, I like R-Type. All of the shooter series manage to feel different despite all of them pretty much having the same premise.

Maybe there was a problem with using Thunder Force as the name? I dunno. I know enough of the games came out in North America and I remember magazines giving them good reviews but they were never positioned on the same level popularity-wise as Gradius or R-Type.

I thought TFV was awful, most 32-bit shooters were.

I counter with either Salamander 2 or DoDonPachi.

Then again, I need to find this to fully refute it. Looks great.

The only problem about the game is the slowdowns (when fighting huge bosses and stuff). Then again, most shooters I've played have those anyways.

I still can't beat this game (I got my copy in the mail recently). Level 7 is freaking insane.

Played it, sucked at it. Doesn't seem like a bad shooter but I found the difficulty to be a bit steep. Nothing wrong with that mind you but it's nice to at least get your feet wet.
