Add in the fanboy equation (for games such as FF7) and it becomes a real headache.

I think I could name a pretty decent Top 50 or 100 list in no particular order, but it's when you order them that the problems arise.

Your supposed to express YOUR opinion on YOUR favourite game, on what game YOU think is the best ever.

I choose Antartic Adventure. It's about a penguin racing to research outposts.

You probably didn't listen to the story. The penguin was going to those research facilities to stop a plan to kill the president with brainwashed penguins. When the penguin got to the last base, he realized he was a test subject too. At that time, he remembered how much he hated the president and shot him in the face. (like Bionic Commando). This later became the inspiration for The Manchurian Canidate.

Though Disgaea is still better.

I couldn't name my favorite game of all time anymore... I haven't played it enough or something...

Its not a FF game though, those get boring about halfway through and I just play to finish the plot.

Star Ocean III did kick some serious ass... Still have to buy download SOII.

Really, I'll get back to you later, although right now. Valkyrie Profile has me on hold...

Wait, is Desgaea PSX or PS2 ?

Games that give freedom like GTA: San andreas are rad..

Otherwise.. I'd say America's Army.. it's free, realistic and constantly updates. *althrough cheaters tend to get on my nerves*

That's about recent games.. For old ones... uh...

Single-play wise I'd say the MegaMan X series on the snes were something we don't really find anymore today, except those Mega Man Zero series on the GBA... but yeah MMX3 rocked at it's time

Multi-player wise the game I probably played the most is without doubt GoldenEye for the N64. How long could the games last with the various settings. Then later came Perfect Dark in which the bots really added challenge to co-op multiplayer games.

I felt bad when Microsoft bought Rare as I seen this as the death of great multiplayer games, but seeing the direction Perfect Dark Zero is heading towards I'm relieved again.

That's about it. Mostly like Cruel Justice, I can't say a favorite game of all time because that opinion changes often.

Mine used to be Ocarina of Time, and although it's still the best example of how a game should flow, play, feel and shape you, it's become rather generic after many plays. A large part of that Zelda feel is cracking each dungeon's code, it's language, it's logic. After several play throughs, it loses some of it's appeal.

Ocarina is surpassed by one game only; Ico. The atmosphere Ico generates, purely through environment, situation and the purity of the relationship between Ico and Yorda is truely magnificent. All of these factors traverse language and culture. They're instantly accessible, and the object of the game is immediately apparent. It's a rare example of the simplicity of games from the Spectrum and C64 era mixed with modern technology and magnificent design. Ico is a game in every essence of the word. It requires you to think and engage, experience instead of watch on.

In many other games, you need a lengthly introduction, or a story. Ico puts you in a situation and you work your way through it. The experience between the beginning and the game is magical. For an art struggling to find validation and justification against people who dismiss it as "unable to make some cry", I challenge them to play it for an hour and miss Yorda's arm when she jumps for you.

Ikaruga. You need balls of steel to beat that game, it's soooo fucking hard. Harder than me on 4chan.
That's why it's good. It's a challenge.

I can understand why you think Ikaruga is good. New games are hardly a challenge these days.

I don´t know which game I think is the best. There are too MANY.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the greatest game ever conceived, hands down. This is Miyamoto's prime masterpiece. He really got goofy and out of whack after this, making some good games, but none of them really all that great (save for the two N64 Zeldas). I'm hoping that Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a fantastic game and a reminder that Nintendo really is the greatest game developer around...but who knows. Besides, if it is, that's only one game. Nintendo's lost its magic.

It's difficult to say. Games that fall into my MOST AWESOMEST EVAR list tend to have the following characteristics:

- Fair, player-friendly gameplay. Not hand-holding or especially easy, but good play control, an engine that doesn't cheat, and a reasonable difficulty curve.
- Aspects that make replaying fun and fresh. Large/interesting maps, nonlinearity, secrets to find, rare drops to farm from enemies, party/character customization, etc.

And now for some all-time favorites:

Dragon Warrior III - An amazingly epic 8-bit RPG. Working your way through its two worlds is tons of fun, especially because of the party customization available.

Castlevania - Symphony of the Night - Gothic Super Metroid + RPG elements = TEH WIN. This game has it all. A crazy ginormous map, a dazzling array of schwag to find/buy/farm (including rare drops that basically turn you into God), familiars to level up, and perty graphics and a fantastic soundtrack to boot. After beating the game, you unlock more godly equipment and special modes - 99 luck Alucard (loads of free shit from enemies and higher challenge because the rest of your stats blow) and Richter Belmont mode (play as Richter for a more "traditional" Castlevania experience).

Final Fantasy Tactics - OK, so the random battle generation is not always fair (*cough giant pile of Chocobos who Meteo half my guys to death before I can do Jack or Shit cough*), but the rest of the game makes up for that. I really got into building up my characters. Although it does take a while, the pacing is fast enough that you feel that you're actually getting somewhere in reasonable time. (In contrast, Phantom Brave bored me quickly. I thought I would love it. Its battles are great fun, but character development and wealth accumulation proceed at a glacial pace, and that royally chafed my ass.) I logged 80 hours on a FFT save and never got around to actually beating it.

I have some more in mind (e.g. especially good/innovative nonlinear platformers like The Addams Family (SNES) and The Goonies II), but I don't feel like writing them up right now.
