Thing is, I have no idea what parts I should hunt after. I want a above average computer that is around $1000 and should be able to play the latest games.

So, I want a few suggestions on what parts I should buy or where to look further.

Hmm, I´ll see what I can pull together when I get to the dorm.

I know a site that has a compiler. I don´t think that AMD or Intel matters that much.

As for games, 512MB - 1GB of RAM at least, and 128-256MB of video memory. Get a well-known card like nVidia or ATI; cheaper ones can be troublesome. You'll definitely want to go with PCI Express, it's a hell of a lot faster.

AMD processors run a fuckton cooler than Intel processors. Where have you been for the last 2 years?

Heh, that got me going. Considering all the problems gamers have been having trying to get their card to run BF2. Problems were more along the ATI side, nVidia, or what my friends told me, didn't encounter too many problems with the game, unless it was a completly out of date piece of hardware.

Go to a friendly neighbourhood Custom PC builder with a general idea of what you ned and the price, things usually go downhill from there. Considering most of them have to compete with larger companies, they are good to deal with.

I would go as far to say that Battlefield 2 is one of the reasons why I want to upgrade. Sure, there is a computer at home that is powerful enough to run Battlefield 2 and various other games, but yeah... it's at home not at my dorm.

I actually will go for 2 gigabytes of RAM , having used computers for the last 11 years, I know for sure that RAM is usually the first thing that becomes limited. So I don't think you can have too much of it.

I probably go around the lines of Yiffy Kitten suggested, maybe a better but better videocard (I won't go for a really expensive one...). The $1000 limit I set up is not a "hard limit", just to set up so I won't wind up with a $2000 deal.

You do realize that motherboards can only handle so much, right? And older versions of Windows struggle with huge amounts of RAM. I'm guessing that's not what you meant, but it's good to make sure you know.

You gotta be careful with building stuff, though. Do it wrong, and stuff catches on fire. I know... the legend of the flaming floppy drive still haunts me today. You could upgrade your existing computer nicely too, and keep most of the settings, and save a bundle. All you need is lotsa knowledge and experience and uncommon sense.

Yes I know it's a limit, but as long I don't go over 4 GB I should be safe. Besides I think the limit is mainly on 32 bits processors on 32 bits OS's, but there is apparently special tricks to go over that 4 GB limit.
