I'm still not sure how to change Overworld Tiles. I tried YY-Chre, and it's not actually a user- (newb) friendly program. Ideally I'd like to draw my own tiles (for overworld) and copy them into the actual ROM. How would I do that? To draw my own and import them into the ROM?

Btw, can I add Animated Tiles? Like the Dancing Flowers?

Maybe I can make an editor.

You could draw the tile within the ROM itself. You could also open YY-CHR with your ROM and open another YY-CHR window by executing YY-CHR again. With the window you just opened, go to File and select New. Click Yes on the box that comes up. Draw your stuff there, copy by selecting the tile you want to copy and pressing Ctrl+C, and paste it with Ctrl+V to the part of the ROM you want to paste the tile at. As for animating tiles, I don't think you could neccesarily add tiles without ASM or data hacking, but you could replace animating tiles, but keep in mind that you would have to replace each frame/tile used for the animation of the sprite/FG/BG/whatever.

Ah! I tried YY-Chre again and it wasn't pretty. It doesn't seem to like SMB3 much.. Is there any other Tile Editor I can use for SMB3? I need something more newb-friendly and generally easier to use than YY.Chre.

Btw, beneficii, if you made an Overworld Tile Editor for SMB3 I'd be SO happy! (since your SMB3 map editor ownz!)

This will edit the tiles on the map screen (along with 16x16 objects in the levels). So you can blank out the entire graphic banks for the maps and use this tool and a graphics editor to create completely custom map tiles.

Eh, in that case I can work on something else.

Thank you for the input DahrkDaiz. The only problem is I don't understand how the TSA Program works. I'd like to draw in my graphics with simple tools (kinda like Windows Paint)

TSA doesn't seem to do that. And it seems to display only "objects" from the levels and nothing from the Overworld (yes, I read the Readme). I know, it IS possible to customize the graphics, I saw people post new SMB3 Hacks with cool overworld changes, but I can't seem to figure out how they did it!!!

I hope the answer is not YY-Chre. That program seems non-newb friendly.

PS: Sry for being such a n00b.

well... if you don't like that program you could try Tile Layer Pro.

Make sure you're viewing the tiles in the correct format, of course. I'm guessing they would be in 2bpp or the NES format on the list. Viewing tiles at the wrong offsets can make them look garbled as well, but if you're at the right place in the rom, it should roughly resemble the tiles you're looking for.

I think the problem isn't YY-Chr but how the game stores it's tiles. YY-Chr is very simple with it's design and works very similiar to something like MS Paint. The tiles look very weird and odd cuz that's how they're stored in the game. Go to the map tiles and go to the box that says "Normal" (bottom left hand corner) and select "FC/NES x16". This should rearrange the tile layouts so that they make much more sense for you. Hope that helps.

Omgosh! It's not garbled now!

Thanks Dahrkdaiz!

Btw, sorry for being such a n00b, but I've wanted to enter ROM modding for a while now. I'm taking a rest from Starcraft lol.

Edit: Grr. I've been trying to edit some of these tiles, but it's not working well. As in I can't find certain tiles + the tools in YY-Chre aren't the best. If a Tile Editor specifically for SMB3 existed, it'd help LOTS of people and encourage SMB3 editiing. I'm not asking for an editor just suggesting it'd be SO awesome if one were made.
