Square-Enix News
"It's been a big day for Nintendo announcements. Square Enix has announced plans to bring Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 (U.S. version was 3) to the Game Boy Advance in 2006. This follows Nintendo's announcement a few weeks back that Final Fantasy 4 (U.S. version was 2) would be coming to the GBA this December in the U.S. It's not known at this time if there will be anything new added to the games or if they will be straight ports.

Also coming next year is Final Fantasy 3 for the Nintendo DS. This title was originally released on the Famicom (NES) in Japan and has never been ported to the U.S. Not content to just port the game over, Sqare Enix has overhauled the game to sport 3D character models with 3D locales. Some of the original FF3 team is contributing to this remake so it will be remain true to its roots.

Perhaps the strangest news out of Square Enix today is the announcement of Mario Basketball for the Nintendo DS. This 3 on 3 game will be Wi-Fi enabled for online play. Close inspection of this screen shot from Famitsu shows the game is borrowing a bit from the Mario Kart games. There's question mark boxes on the floor of the court and it appears the characters obtain items, like shells, to use in the game. Does this game open the door for more Nintendo & Square Enix projects in the future? Perhaps!"

I've also found a Mario Kart DS clip that I don't think has gotten around much. Personally, this clip slightly dissapoints me, as Luigi's handling looks atrocious. Tell me what you guys think. Mario Kart DS Video (OMG RARE!!1one)

You handling of images makes the atrocity of Luigi's bad handling look like someone kicking a kitten.

Ah, this is great. The first FF game for DS I´m going to get is FFVI. You can link with another friend to play together, right?

I´ve almosty beaten FFV on the computer so I see no need to get that game.

Sweeeeeeet.

I always wanted to play FF3j, but I never got around to locating a patched ROM (or patching one myself). I wonder what other changes might be made as well. Did the original game have any features that many gamers found annoying? When the original Final Fantasy was ported to the GBA, they changed the magic system to use standard MP, and I think they added automatic target switching to the battle system (so you wouldn't waste attacks on a space where an enemy used to be). I'm guessing that even if they don't want to change any aspects of the game's engine, there will be extras like a bestiary or additional dungeons. Either way, I'll definitely pick this up when it comes out.

I remember Eph had one in a bundle with Nesticle, fully translated. I didn't get too far in it a few years back, but now that it's on my PSP, I can play it however I want. Ask, and me shall give he to ye.

I was already slightly complaining about it...not for the fact that IIIj was coming for the DS and I already knew about it...but I didn't quite get why in the world they would port that title to 3D. It just really didn't make much sense to me. Now, updating the graphics like they did in DoS in the 2D perspective I got and I loved at the same time. I just don't know if I see it being pulled off very well.

And FFIIIj translated is not at all hard to find. I guess what makes it's game that much of a standout would be the job system the FF5 based their game on. Too bad there haven't been many of those past FFT/A.

Beat ya to it.

Seriously, they should make a final fantasy with all the jobs from ff3j, 5, tactics, and tactics advance. And add in the weapon skill thingie from ff9/ta and the multiple ability thing from 5/tactics.(although more refined in tactics)

At least they're giving the game the full remake treatment. Could have easily made it 2D but obviously they have some plans for it so...

Now, if the game only bears a slight resemblance to FF3, then maybe we can riot.

I'm a fan of VII myself, but this certainly allows the new generation to get involved in the earlier games in the franchise

Hmm...

5 and 6, two of my favorites, coming to GBA, which is good... and unfortunately, 3 - my favorite - is coming to DS, which I planned not to get for lack of games that interested me (and general disdain of the touchscreen concept). Damn it. Well, there's another hundred+ that I'll be spending when that comes out...

The problem was for me was actually finding a "good" translation. I remember mine was pretty messed up, Potion's were called Apples, or something weird like that. (and so on)

I've heard in the past people claim that FFIIIj is better than V. What would you guys say?

The 3D thing seems skeptical (wonder how battling will turn out? Probably like the PSX games I'd guess), but I'm sure it'll turn out to be good.

I liked FF3 but haven't played all the way through it yet. It's certainly ahead of its time given the limitations of the NES, and was surprisingly deep.

I started playing a FF3j translation, but it stopped being translated partway through. I tried playing through with the crazy symbols and the help of a walkthrough, but then I eventually just gave up.

It'd be nice to get to play the whole thing through, it was really good while it was English.

FF3 was a good game but when I got to that water boss in the water that handed me my ass, I gave up on it.

I´ve almost beaten FFV because I´m inthe last dungeon. I plan to level up and defeat Shinryuu.

In other good news, McDonalds has drawn up a contract with Nintendo and now every McDonalds location will be a WiFi hotspot for the DS (or any other WiFi thingies)

The McD's deal is neat but it strikes me as odd... I dunno how many kids are going to drag their parents there just so that they can play Mario Kart instead of eating their Big Mac.

And it's not every location... "Only" around 6,000. Not every restaurant has WiFi, but those that do will support it.
