anyone know an free/open source software that will do this? Do not give comments about why not to do the conversion from m4a to MP3... I just want to know if there is a free solution instead of trying to use shareware solutions.

Before I had iTunes, I had to figure out how to do this. Winamp 5. Play the M4A files using the Disk Writer output, encode those to MP3's.

Winamp Disk Write doesn't play it in real time, but as fast as your computer can decode the audio (usually only a few seconds in these days of computing).

But... I know of JHymn... works well, mainly intended to remove DRM from iTunes files, but it can double as a converter to MP3.

Thanks to all who responded. That JHymn program did it for me, it also filled out the ID3 tag if there was information in the m4a file.
