Last I checked, you need to buy QuickTime 7 Pro in order to convert into the low resolution these 5th Gen iPods need. And as Yiffy Kitten said, re-encoding video isn't something you just assume will be very quick. Hell, by the time you're done encoding it, you may as well have watched it five times already.

Also... the last time I used iTunes (version 4.6 I think), you could play MP3s. Removing support for MP3 would be extremely stupid... but my (4th Gen) iPod happily plays them, and I don't use iTunes so I'm good

Of course iTunes/iPod support MP3's, dunno where he got that from .
You indeed need QT Pro in order to use the "export to iPod format" feature.

And about it taking time, well, if I really want a certain movie (or show or whatever) on my iPod to watch it on the road, I'll just do it, I won't really care if it takes a while. Don't know 'bout your PC's, but Mac's don't have problems with something like that running in the background while doing other stuff...
Last but not least, the movie feature is JUST a feature, an extra. It replaces the old iPod, you don't have to watch movies on it, but still, nice extra no??

You could add support for NSF, SPC, your own sound format you just made up, videos, etc etc etc. And it plays DS games too.

And if 4GB still isn't enough, you can just swap cards during play, so long as the program allows for it (not hard to do, just don't try to access the memory card while it's being swapped). Sure it means having to carry multiple cards, but come on...

I could probably fit like 50 of those in my pocket. (And they're actually smaller than the image shows, last I checked.)

Hmm... The attachment your getting sounds kinda like those PSP Memory Cards.
How much are those 4GB cards?

It's not like burning a CD or encoding music at all. Have you ever done video editing? It's quite stressful on the CPU. Of course, like I said, I haven't done it in a while, but if it takes as long as it used to, figure 2-3x the length of the video. A little longer yet if you need to do the audio too.

It wouldn't matter if you're on an Intel x86 or IBM PowerPC (mislabelled as Apple). It's going to take a long time to encode a video. About the only thing close to where you can do it in about 1.5 times the length of a video is an SGI, and those are built for video, unlike Intel x86 or the PowerPC.

Lots, but smaller cards are significantly cheaper. You can get 16-32MB for like 20 bucks.

Damn! I just Froogled it. Portable media cards are ridiculous! I thought it was just the PSP's cards that were overpriced.

I find it odd that we pay less than a dollar per gig when we buy harddrives, but around $100 when we buy those portable cards.

Well, for those who wanted new Powermacs or Powerbooks, Apple has announced a new conference, on Oct 19.
Perhaps this time there'll be lack of iPods .

why is it odd? it is expected to cost like this. Magnetic media is cheap while flash stuff is expensive. You know how hard it is to make one of these flash drives? Manipulating magnets isn't as bad as manipulating electrons and dealing with heat dissipation.

...So is Apple trying to overshadow everyone during the month of October for some odd reason?

I'd guess it has to be something to do with, you know, computers this time. Remember they used to make those?

Mac still makes computers. Its just that more places advertise and sell iPods, I guess.
I don't think the BestBuy here even has an Apple section, other than the MP3 department.

Updated Powerbooks (G4 of course ...) and Quad Powermacs (2.5GHz) .
Probably the last updates before the IntelMacs come.

Yay, PowerBooks and PowerMacs!

Aperture looks pretty swanky too.

Ah, such a pity I probably can't buy one of these at the moment (PowerBook) due to current legal/financial issues.

But I wants one soooooooooooooooooooo very, very, very badly. Please... I've been a good girl!!

Yeah, btw it can also have up to 16 GB RAM, and a Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 with 512MB VRAM !
But that's the top one, looks more like a workstation .
