Those bitches!
Why couldn't they warn the iPod Nano buyers that they were releasing a new VIDEO IPOD within a month of the Nano's release?

Good thing I didn't buy that damn Nano!
I have yet to inform my father on this new iPod.

Well, the Nano/Mini and the full iPod have traditionally been for different markets/users anyways.... so I don't think the Nano and the new iPod are really in competition with each other so much...

Yeah, I guess you're right. The iPod Nano replaced the Mini and the new video iPod replaced the old photo. It still weird that they would release them so close together, though.

So how many grand does this one cost?

a video ipod...unless you have videos in apple's format, the thing is practically useless... not unless it also still retains its music playing capabilities... but then, if you already have an iPod, then you don't need this one.

I think this is finally an apple product that will flop

@ Chronosphere-X: my iPod is already 2 years old, no problems with the battery so far. And I know plenty of people who also don't have problems.

@ neotransotaku: this is the video support

MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

My iPod is a year and a half old, it's a 3rd Gen..... I've not had problems with the battery on mine either.

I just keep wanting to replace mine. With something fancier. And more colorful... or such.

Paint it. Just make sure you use paint that sweat won't remove.

Really, it seems pretty cool, but I'm holding out for a DS flashcart. Then I can play whatever the hell movies and music I want on it from a memory card.

That's what neo said.

Do you really think people are going to start releasing shows in shitty .mov or .m4v formats? No fucking way, not when .avi and .ogm and .mkv are light years ahead. Unless someone can hack the pod to do these formats, it's a poor choice.

Well it's MEANT to play the music video's, TV shows etc. you download at iTunes, duh.
It's kinda normal they won't support illegal video downloads (yet).

Btw, H.264 compression video is the most advanced format nowadays anyway and has become the standard.

Aww... C'mon! A flashcart can't compete with an iPod!

Says who? Even a 1GB memory card will hold hundreds of songs, and you can get them up to 4GB. Write a simple MP3/OGG/whatever sound format you want player for DS, put it on a flashcart, and use one of the various GBA media player devices for storage (all that I know of allow DS programs to access the memory card), and you've got a kickass MP3 player for far less than the cost of an iPod, with pretty much whatever ability you want (especially if the program is open source, and I don't see why it wouldn't be). You could add support for NSF, SPC, your own sound format you just made up, videos, etc etc etc. And it plays DS games too.

And if 4GB still isn't enough, you can just swap cards during play, so long as the program allows for it (not hard to do, just don't try to access the memory card while it's being swapped). Sure it means having to carry multiple cards, but come on...

I could probably fit like 50 of those in my pocket. (And they're actually smaller than the image shows, last I checked.)

Hmm... I'd be surprised if Apple ever added any kind of removable storage support to an iPod though.

I think there may be a third party device that used to do it with photos and stuff, but Apple themselves.... I don't think it will happen.

This post screams "I'm not video, I'm anti-ipod!".

You can *easily* convert video to this format, meaning all of those bittorrented Daily Show's will fit run beautifully on it.

so, there are free encoders of the three support video formats? Also, who is going to take the time to convert the video? Certainly not me--and I highly doubt the groups who release stuff out there will start using apple's format just for the sake of the new video iPod... We'll see in the long run whether non-licensed stuff will make it into the iPod at a large scale...

Yeah, I mean, Apple doesn't support any format besides theirs. You can't even play MP3's in iTunes.

you can't? but...all I do is place MP3s into iTunes as well as MP3s into my iPod. I've gone into my iPod's file system and I found MP3s that are not converted to m4a and stuff...

So, I'm not sure what you are talking about...not unless, I have an older version of the iPod...

Last I checked, it took quite a while to recode a 30-minute show (last I checked was on my old Thunderbird 1.4GHz though). I doubt people that aren't PC geeks will take the time (10 mins?) to convert shows with unstable software to a format their iPod will play.
