It seems Apple have called a special event on Wednesday the 12th.... for those who aren't aware "One more thing..." is what Steve Jobs says at the end of a keynote --- usually right before he introduces something new and unexpected.

The rumor mills are all saying we're about to see a Video iPod... and there seems to be a little bit of evidence to support it.

Now, I don't believe anything till I see it on Apple's website, but it's fun to speculate... What do you think Apple might be up to?

A video iPod would be pretty cool.... but do you think that people would want one?

Another rumor which is 'believable'

Select members of the industry and media received invitations Tuesday from Apple to a special event taking place one week from today at the California Theater in San Jose. The event, Think Secret has learned, will not usher in the much rumored video iPod but rather new PowerBook and Power Mac systems.

Specifics, however, remain scarce surrounding the PowerBook and Power Mac G5 update, which Think Secret first reported in September.

While the October 12 event will disappoint Apple watchers eager to see the fruits of Apple's labor on its fifth-generation iPod, it has become apparent that Apple wants to avoid detracting attention from the new iPod nano, which carries high margins and which Apple expects might sell up to 10 million units this holiday quarter. While full-size iPod sales have been depressed for the better part of the year, especially in capacities beyond 20GB, Apple's bigger priority at this time is halting the skid in both Power Mac and PowerBook sales.

PowerBook and Power Mac systems have both received small updates once this year in February and April, respectively.

As for wanting an iPod Video, sure would be cool I guess.
Instead of listening to music for hours on the train to work/school, you could watch a movie !

A video iPod would be cool, but you'd need to choose between buying it or a car.

Video iPod, the usefulness of this is to play what kind of videos in what kind of format? Also, how good would the quality of it? I mean, the iPod screen ain't that big... i dunno, this is one thing I don't have much of a use for--i'm curious about the battery life and the format of videos that are supported... If they don't support the common video formats out there, then this ain't going to fly....

I know what the RUMORS are. However, I'd personally expect something more towards the extent of Apple using AMD chips, or finally announcing an OS X release for PC systems.

VIDEO IPOD? *Stares at Newly Bought Nano*
I knew never to trust a guy with a first name Steve.
Maybe we can hope its not an iPod. That'd be sweet if they made something new and completely different from the iPod.

LoL never gonna happen I think, they just announced months ago that they will switch to Intel.
The new "MacIntel's" will be released somewhere next year I think.

Also, they will never release an OSX for a PC system, although the new OSX (for the MacIntel) will probably be hacked so it'll work on PC, but Apple will never do it, and try to prevent it by adding all kinds of hardware security etc.
Although, it will most likely be possible to install Windows on a MacIntel.
Not like I'm interested in that, I'm not a retard, why would I install an inferior OS on a Mac .
Perhaps good for the hardcore gamers who want to play EVERY game on their Mac, but most good games get released anyway.

@Snika: latest rumor says it won't be an iPod, just an update on their hardware (Powerbook and Powermac). We'll see .

Well, iPodLinux does video really smoothly... unless you enable audio support, but it's still okay then. And well, Apple might be afraid of iPL becoming more popular than the supplied OS which does not have a name (usually called iPod OS or RetailOS).

But you know what would be really cool: A PowerBook G5. Now that'll be something to drool over... don't know how they could recover from the G5 cooling problem, but hey, people complained that Pentiums would be too much in a laptop, and these days we see Pentium-4 laptops!

I guess I should be all "wtf" about the fact that the iPod was meant TO PLAY MUSIC, NOT VIDEOS. Playing MP3s takes a lot less power than playing a video

I heard you could just mod a current iPod picture to do video. Huh. Standard cost for 20 (or 60) gig + a little hax0ring != your possible bankruptcy.

Anyways, it's about time. Although I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it'll have to be in .mov format.

No SHIT, really?

I was saying "wtf" because you said the iPod played video well, and then contradicted yourself. That's all.

They're also apparently gonna start charging money for music videos, something that was free before.

Apple are so awesome.

Now I really really REALLY want an iPod.

The TV episode thing could really take off especially at $1.99 an episode; and if they extend it to Europe and other areas, people will be pleased I think.
