| I want to have a program. However, it requires Windows XP Service Pack 2. I have been told that SP2 opens up new security holes, is more buggy and have got worse compability with older games. Due to these (very unconfirmed) rumors, I've been doubtful when it comes to downloading and installing it. Is this true at all? Do you recommend that I keep XP or upgrade to SP2? |

| I believe if you leave SP2 unpatched, then yes, there are security holes. However, I'm sure a few of them have been fixed. However, when it comes to security holes, how many of us are truly effected... there is a possibility of a breach but it doesn't happen for sure. As long as you have preventive measures in place (no use of IE/Outlook Express, several firewall layers, AV, etc), things will be fine. However, if you want to upgrade to SP2, I recommend a complete OS reinstallation. Many people who upgraded to SP2 on a non-virgin XP installation often runs into problems. So, if you reinstall XP, then apply SP2, then get the updates for SP2--things should be okay. |

NEVER EVER USE SP2! It totally fucked up my comp and that's why I had the problem with the services. I formatted and didn't install it again. Well, my computer works like a sharm again.  I wouldn't recommend it, but if you really need it, go ahead but also get the new hotfixes then to close the holes. |

| Yeah, I recommend that you update to XP SP2. Weather you do it from a slipstreamed CD or on an existing system via Windows Update or the 250MB file ... I haven't heard any problems installing it. Yes, there are security holes left in Windows. But the vast majority of them were already in Windows in the first place. |

| yeah update to SP2....theres a good chance nothing bad will happen, but if you dont, theres also some holes before sp2 which arent good, so you may as well just update to sp2. | |||

| As it's been said, install SP2 on a fresh install. I never ran on any problems that way (only time I had to reformat was because of my own damn fault... screwing with partitions). It works well. |

| I got SP2 installed fresh when I re-installed everything. Haven´t had any rpoblems with it so far. I was sceptical to use it first but it´s not a big difference from SP1. |

I have to use SP2, otherwise my wireless internet doesn't work at all And I'm too lazy to run a cable up here (Mom doesn't want it showing up and wants it to be hidden because she thinks it looks tacky. well, it does, but...  ).And yeah, I recommend installing it on a fresh install as well. SP2 is usually okay then. I should know from experience, installing SP2 on my parents computer totally fucked a lot of things up, and it was while the XP install was six months old  |

| Now, my Windows experience always seems to be different than everyone else's. I had a 3 month 1 week+ uptime until Battlefield 1942 finally crashed my system (and I play it almost every night). So knowing that my Windows experiences are typically "Above average" (or everyone else just fucks something up hardware or software wise)... I installed SP2 on my PC and my parents PC on older installs with no problems whatsoever. I used the "Network install" (single DL not through Windows Update). SP2 is more secure than SP1. However, it IS slighly true that some older, less-secure games/apps designed around Win95 and Win98 first edition are less compatible. Unless you know your app is listed on a non-compatibility list, don't worry about it. I highly suggest you run Service Pack 2 unless you want to be a host for new worms and trojans that will undoubtedly come out. The MS Blaster worm doesn't affect SP2 at all, for example, but you can still get it if you have SP1 and didn't install that critical update (and an unpatched WinXP or Win2k with SP2 or earlier is just begging to get infected).Once SP2 is installed, you'll probably want to turn off a few minor annoyances like the firewall and antivirus reminder(s), and automatic updates. That's about it. |

| SP2 is good as long as your computer isn't on the verge of death. If I were you, I'd install it and see how it runs. If it isn't doing well, the process is completely reversable with Restore Points. |

| I once installed SP2 and had no problems. You just make sure you compliment it with a good AV and a good firewall (not the one included in SP2) |
