Well, Hockey season does start on Wednesday, so it only makes sense that this thread was created.

Anyway, I guess I'll do my picks:

Northeast Division

1. Ottawa Senators (Can Dominik Dominate the Division)
2. Toronto Maple Leafs (Lindros and Allison come home)
3. Buffalo Sabres (It's finally Miller time)
4. Montreal Canadiens (Youngsters need to step it up)
5. Boston Bruins (Leetch is no Ray Bourque)

Atlantic Division

1. Pittsburgh Penguins (Saved by some guy named Crosby. And a ping-pong ball.)
2. New York Islanders (Loss of Aucoin hurts, even with signing of Alexei Zhitnik.)
3. New Jersey Devils (Stevens retiring, and Elias with hepatitis is not good)
4. Philadelphia Flyers (Forsberg can't fill the skates of Recchi, LeClair, AND Roenick)
5. New York Rangers (Big problems in the Big Apple)

Southeast Division

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (Can Lightning strike twice?)
2. Florida Panthers (Can the Eliminator have a repeat performance)
3. Atlanta Thrashers (Hossa and Kovalchuk are a dynamic 1-2 punch)
4. Carolina Hurricanes (Shouldn't your goalie be a Gerber goalie?)
5. Washington Capitals (Freisen and Cassels add veteran leadership, but not much else)

Central Division

1. Detroit Red Wings (Looks like Osgood picked the right time to return to Hockeytown)
2. Chicago Blackhawks (Aucoin and Khabibulin should help the defense)
3. Nashville Predators (Kariya should give veteran leadership)
4. St Louis Blues (No Pronger and MacInnis=No Defense whatsoever)
5. Columbus Blue Jackets (Foote adds sting to the defense)

Northwest Division

1. Vancouver Canucks (The NHL's best line is back and as brutal as ever)
2. Edmonton Oilers (Adding a Selke winner in Peca and a Norris winner in Pronger gives the defense a big boost.)
3. Calgary Flames (Loss of Conroy and Gelinas makes the flame start to burn out)
4. Colorado Avalanche (Sakic and Hejduk have some big skates to fill)
5. Minnesota Wild (Despite rule changes to the contrary, Minnesota is sticking with a defense-first system)

Pacific Division

1. San Jose Sharks (Still with plenty of Bite)
2. Anaheim Mighty Ducks (It's Duck season again)
3. Dallas Stars (No major improvements, but still good)
4. Phoenix Coyotes (Too bad Gretzky can't put himself in the lineup)
5. Los Angeles Kings (New Forwards, but not much else)

So, without further ado...

I'll have to come up with my picks tomorrow, but I'll say that you're REALLY overrating Buffalo and Toronto there, Luigi. Buffalo had a good pre-season but that means nothing when the puck drops, and Toronto's in an iffy situation; IF Allison/Lindros stay healthy, they'll make a run for a playoff spot. If they don't... they're not coming close to 8th spot.

Anyway, for those who don't know the new rules:

1. The linesmen have the right to wave off icing if they feel it was an attempted pass.

2. Goalies can only play the puck in a trapezoid-shaped area behind the net. If they don't, they get a two minute delay of game penalty.

3. Two line passes are allowed.

4. If the game remains tied after five minutes of overtime, the teams take turns in a shootout to decide a winner. (In other words, no more ties.)

5. Goalie pads, blockers, jerseys, and gloves are cut down in size.

6. Teams that ice the puck cannot make a line change before the next faceoff.

7. If there's an offside player, he can go to the blue line to "tag-up" and avoid being called for the offside.

8. Goalies will be penalized for "freezing" the puck unneccesarily.

9. Players can be fined and suspened after getting a diving penalty.

10. A player who instigates a fight automatically gets a game misconduct and a one game suspension.

11. Any player who shoots the puck out of play in his own zone gets a 2 minute delay of game penalty.

One major problem with the NHL now. The majority of the games will be broadcast on Comcast...I don't have Comcast. I have Dish Network, and I can't even get cable here if I wanted to. I'll have to rely soley on the games that'll be on FSN, since ESPN dropped their option.

The flip side is OLN will focus solely on the NHL, while ESPN has MLB, NFL, NBA, X-Games, etc to do... In addition, there will be games also on NBC as well... unless some of you guys don't pick up your local channels, which I don't understand why you can't...

I'm sure there will be some surprises this season...

Since the NHL lost its contract with ESPN, I think part of the reason they made all these rule changes was to get more fans into the game. I heard that they reduced sizing in the pads and some other new rules because they wanted more scoring, which in turn may make the game more interesting when a team has an easier chance to come back from a couple goal deficit, which also gets more fans into the game and brings in more money. I don't know if this is the reason they made all these changes, well I know I like them.

Well my team, the Red Wings, are lookin' pretty tough after improving to 3-0 last night, despite cutting their payroll in half. 2 wins over the Blues and one over the Flames. I know both of those teams have lost some players, but every team pretty much had to make some sacrifices. It'll be a while before I know what to expect out of every team in the league, like I used to.

And this was the first time I've actually looked at all the rule changes that have been made. Man, they're being really hard on those goalies. But scoring seems to have gone up, and that's apparently what people like, I guess. It's also cool how they added the shootout.

Hey, Montreal's 3-0 as well. Fantastic start to the season despite winning all three games by... well... a goal. Yeah.

Still, things are looking bright early on although OTTAWA comes up next tomorrow. Blech. That could end our little streak.

Ottawa is gonna lose.

It's not like we can lose our first match at home.

It would be a shame.

The Sens are playing the Laughs (Leafs ) right now, so:

Montreal=Rested
Ottawa=Not rested

So, Montreal DOES have a shot.

Montreal and Ottawa are both 3-0, with Buffalo at 3-1. If Toronto beats Ottawa (Tied at 5-5 now), they the three way tie will be retained, point-wise.

Which they didn't.

I hate the shootout but I love it when it comes to bite Toronto in the ass.

Now hopefully Ottawa used up all their goals tonight.

Apparently Daniel Alfredsson had to do it again and in third period aswell...

4-2 For Ottawa wasn't really what I was expecting.. I mean from the start to the end of the second period all was going for the best for Montréal.. But then if it wasn't for Alfredsson and his two goals.. we might have seen something tottally different.

Interesting fact, there have been 5,729 ties in the history of the NHL. Now, that number will never change again...hopefully

There has been one shutout this season correct?

4.

Two by Roberto Luongo (FLA), one by Dominik Hasek (OTT), and one by Yann Danis (MTL).

4. Yann Danis (Habs) last night, 9th goalie to get a shutout in his first NHL game.

Their games:

Well, we didn't do it.

I'm wondering how long Lindros is going to last at this pace. Certainly not until April...
