I don't think I have found any other thread about this, so I decided to start it myself.
Bad layout ideas:
1. Mp3s
2. Ones that give readers seizures
3. Bad color contrasts
Anyone care to add?

Well, formatting codes and HTML aren't allowed in thread titles.
Anyway, other bad layout ideas include Flash/Java (simple Flash animations are alright, as long as they aren't huge), really big images, and scrollbars.

Probably signatures that take up more space than 2+ other posts combined. Those are annoying.

Aw, HyperHacker said it first.

Yeah. The most important thing is to make sure your posts is readable. I can't believe that so many people post with a crap background that clashes with the text. Isn't it obvious?

You said bad color contrasts, I said that, above all else, the layout should be readable.
I gave contrast as a common example.
Get over it.

Because this board is full of scrollbar-layout bigots. They CAN be done well, you know. Just ask Snort.

SamuraiX isn't the brightest person around, as you can see from his thread title alone.

Then, too, there's this thing called the FAQ that has this question in it: Are there any rules for post layouts?

Of course, it fails to mention not to use BMP files, and also fails to mention not to link to images on your own HDD, not to steal images by hotlinking to them instead of putting them on your own account, and to use @import for custom CSS files instead of <link rel>...

That's still not all that great a layout. It's nice, but it doesn't do anything about the annoyance of having to use a separate scrollbar.

Also, someone who uses their background colour as their visited link colour may want to consider taking their own advice.

If you actually use the scrollbar, you need to get a post-1980 mouse. Middle wheel scrolling elimiates the need for scrollbars.

As for my layout, if the colors don't come up right, blame Setzer. He coded this layout, not me.

It seems the link colors are dependant upon the scheme you're using. I'm using Night, and I see links I post just fine, visited or not.

I'm not a CSS master, so I'll mention the colors thing to Setz.

I use the scrollbar by moving my mouse wheel. That still means having to move the mouse back and forth to get the post onto the page, scroll through it all, and having it 'catch' the mouse when scrolling past it. Also, ever try posting a big image in a scrollbar layout?

Well, as there isn´t a rule against explicit layout pics, I think that should be allowed.

Scrollbar layouts CAN be done well. However, the majority of them are small, boxy ones that are 200x300, with a 200x300 picture next to it, and then claiming that it's perfectly fine. If you make a scrollbar layout, do it right by giving lots of room before the scrolling begins.

I think <link rel> will make the browser wait for the file to load before it renders the page.

The usage of <link rel> will bring the loading of a thread to a screaming halt if the server that the CSS file is hosted on goes down. The browser will halt everything as it waits for the server with the CSS file to timeout.

The usage of <style>@import url('path_to/css_file.css');</style> will allow the browser to continue loading everything in the page as it waits for the server with the CSS file to timeout. You'll almost never notice that the CSS file isn't loading until you get to the post with the layout without the CSS.

Mrrf... maybe I should study these things before I make layouts. I guess I'll have to fix my layout to use @import.

Isn't that redundant?
