And why would they do a name change like that for Europe?

You guys are all making me jealous. I've retreated to SotN as a result.

Oh! One other thing I'm not sure of if it's the same as the US versions:
The game cover!
All of my other DS games are first party titles, and they're in sleek little black covers. This Castlevania game though, it's in a clear-white-ish, crappy looking cover. I was just wondering if all third party games are like that.
God it's ugly!

In this PAL version, Frankenstein isn't even called that. He's called "The Creature". How original.
Actually, he's The Creature in the NTSC version, too. I just call him Frankie because that's what he looks like, and that way people who have seen the monster but don't know his official name will immediately know who I'm referring to. I'm guessing they used that boring old generic name because Frankenstein got copyrighted or trademarked at some point in the past. (Incidentally, this is why restaurant staff sing crappy original celebration songs instead of Happy Birthday, but that's another subject entirely.)

I'm now pretty close to the end, but I don't really feel like finishing up right away. Next time I pick the game back up, I'll be spending most of my time farming rare souls to upgrade my weapons further. I want that Crissaegrim-like ultimate sword, dang nab it.

Ugh, I'm having trouble beating Death in Julius Mode. The bosses late in the game in Julius Mode are annoying, especially Aguni, the fire demon in the mirror. Anyone got any strategies for beating Death in Julius Mode.

EDIT: Never mind, I beat him along with the rest of the mode.

Has anyone else felt like revisiting SOTN after playing this? One of my favorite aspects of that game is that some of the enemies' rare drops are uberpowerful equipment that basically turns you into God. Nobody's forcing anyone to farm and equip this stuff, so I hardly think that its mere existence is ZOMG CHEEP AND BROXEN ROFLES, but if your idea of a fun time is running around slaughtering enemies without a second thought, there you have it. And that is my idea of fun. There is a ways to go before you can get this stuff anyway. I also think it's fun to level up the sword familiar to its max. Somewhere around level 80, it develops this very fast and efficient swoop/divebomb attack that looks cool (as if it's going back into the TV) and kills enemies before you can reach them, even if you are using God equipment. Pwnage is w00t.

So anyway, I just beat the game with something like 198% in ~6:30, including time spent farming my favorite weapons - a Crissaegrim and a Runesword. I was pleasantly surprised how well I managed although I hadn't run through it in literally about four years. My fighting skills were rather rusty, but I remembered the location of all the secrets. And I am now raising money for a Duplicator for even more pwnage.

I've been playing SOTN since I can't play DoS. It's actually the ONLY PSX game I legally own since I purchased it on a whim many years ago, then found out that VGS ran it on my Celeron at full speed for some insane reason. (Only have the Greatest Hits version, but meh.)

I'm about halfway through the second castle, but it NEVER gets old. Even if I don't really farm items.

I first played SOTN with a burned disc (Randy had a pirate flag on his dorm room door for a reason ), but I loved the game and wanted to own it legitimately, so when I came across a $10 used copy at a local store, I had to grab it. I'm glad I did because the game is quite difficult to find now. The only annoyance is that the HD Loader won't put PSX discs on the hard drive in our PS2, so I have to keep the disc handy every time I want to play. (We habitually load the PS2 games that we're currently playing...because we can and because convenience and decreased loading times are w00t). The burned copy is the original version, and the legit copy is Greatest Hits. The only difference I know of is that two Japanese familiars available only with a GameShark were removed in GH. And of course the case has an ugly neon green stripe on it, but I don't notice any difference in gameplay, so it's all good to me.

I just wish there wouldn't be as much slowdown when a lot is going on onscreen. I wonder if the bothersome parts of the game (like that courtyard with a bunch of Karasuman enemies in it) would run better on a PSX emulator. Colleen, how much slowdown do you notice?

Hey, my copy was $19.99 Canadian which was a pretty sweet deal given how horrid the exchange rate was back then.

Hm, on a PSX emulator... I use ePSXe to run the game and I think any slowdown that appears is due to the game itself and not the emulator. I occasionally get a weird occurance where the game slows down a little bit but usually pausing or entering a save/portal room speeds it up again, although I'm sure that problem can be fixed by playing with the optimal settings for the game. But yeah... it runs at 100% speed pretty much and the sound quality's good.

I finally beat this game.

98.4%
Level 50
8 something hours.

I'm getting into Julius Mode now. Mind me asking though, do you get more characters in Julius mode besides the girl?

And are the rumors true about Alucard?

Anyways, I don't think this game beats SoTN, but it's up there. SoTN to me felt more diverse, and the level layout just seemed more original, while as DoS was just kind of a "keep going and killing things", and there wasn't really any exploration needed (like others said).

Still though, a great game, and definitely worth picking a DS up for. The music was incredible, the storyline was great, and the game just rocked hard, like all Castlevania games.

Yes, he is in there. You get him in the Demon Guest House at the same spot as where you got the pendent in the original mode.

He knows Dracula's attack with the 3 fireballs. Sweetness.

He's pretty good but I wouldn't recommend using him in the game's last bosses like Death. I seem to have a hard time beating them with him.

Oh, and guess who you fight at the end of Julius Mode.

Spoiler:
You fight Soma who is possesed by Dracula. There's a bad ass music playing during the fight. He also transform into the demon that Dracula transformed to in earlier Castlevania games.
