Even though it's short, it's a really good game, it's worth every penny. It's not getting all those awards and GOTMs for nothing. The replay value is AMAZING, I'm already going to play the game all over again from 0%.

Besides, don't let that eight hours get your hopes down, I only have two of the seven or so maxed out weapons, and only 48% of the 100% maximum of souls/spells. This game has a LOT of depth, and besides, I'm a Castlevania Vet; I know my way around the block. xD

Even so, I wouldn't say 8 hours is anything bad. Only took me a few more hours to complete SoTN (200%+), and for a sidescrolling / RPG, I'd say 8 hours is pretty good.

Right now I'm at 22% with 1 hour and 22 minutes. The Castle does seem pretty huge, but like Joachim said, doesn't seem like there's a lot of exploration needed.

I'll just say holding unto my DS for this was completely worth it.

I got over 79% of the game completed and have more than half of the souls. I'm at Level 56 and just finished beating that demon in the mirror that gave Dario power. I also found a way to level up fast. Right now, I'm too busy trying to get the Final Guard's soul, I have no idea what it does but I'll find out myself.

Well...

...we bought a DS. And this game. (And Wario Ware, but that's a different subject.) We have a decent GBA collection and the DS is backwards compatible, so why not?

The only problems are that the DS has a dead pixel and that Randy brought it on a business trip, so I won't get to play for a while because of course we'll want to exchange the system right after he gets back. At least Nintendo has a zero tolerance defect policy, so it won't be a problem.

Oh, the dead pixel bug. What are the odds... not so much an issue now as it was before though.

I've been teased by screens of the latest version of iDeaS (DS emulator) showing the title screen of DoS.

My DS has a dead pixel or two and I don't really care. I don't see the big deal. I only occasionally notice them. It'd be a different story if it was right in the middle of the screen or I had like, 5+.

So far I'm over 11 hours into the game and only 48% done. Who said this game was short? If you aren't trying to rush through it, you can get a whole lot more out of it. Though, after this, and Julius mode, I'll probably try a speed run.

11 hours/48%? What, is levelling slower this time around or are you just trying to grab every single item/soul right away?

I'm just trying to enjoy the game the most I can. Though I finished it (the first time) at around the 15 hour mark.

ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG

This really is worthy of its hype.

Rando beat the game while on his trip and we exchanged the DS for one with zero defects, and I got a turn on it on Thursday. I haven't slept very much since then. I don't know if I like this or SOTN better, but it's definitely as good as SOTN. It has everything I loved about that game - extensive map with lots of secrets, fun Super Metroid + RPG elements gameplay with a reasonable difficulty curve, umpty bazillion varieties of schwag to find (and farm from enemies). I especially like how you have an incentive to collect multiples of the same soul to level them up and have extras to use to strengthen your weapons. Now if only Frankenstein would drop his soul already. (Seriously, I've killed at least 500 of them, and I do have the lucky 7 armor, soul eater ring, and a few ghost dancers equipped.)

I remember trying to get the Frankenstein soul. I forgot how many I killed but it took a lot of kills to get his soul. I manage to get it without the soul eater ring but with the lucky 7 armor and 9 Ghost dancers.

I now have over 90% of all the souls and I'm trying to get the souls of the very difficult enemies like the Iron Golem. Man did it take forever to kill that Golem.

Yeeeees! HA HA FRANKENBERRY I PWN J00

(Translation: I finally got it. I wish I would have had it before the farking clock tower, though. )

There's a topic on the GameFAQs DoS board with soul drop rates. I forget what the source is and I don't know how reliable the numbers are, but the drop rate for Frankie was 2%. Unsurprising. I got quite a few levels (and tins of spinach) out of the process.

8 hours!?
I finally got this game a few days back, and I love it!
I'm on level 67, 99.4% map completion, and 88.6% of souls collected. I'm yet to get the Frankenstein soul myself.

I found a cool little way of getting money in the game quite early into it - 3 hours, although you can do it much earlier.
Spoiler:
In The Lost Village area, there is a room with 5 Zombies walking around. Throwing axes or shooting arrows takes them out very quickly, and it isn't too hard to quickly get 9 souls.
Buy 9 Brass Knuckles, then upgrade them all to Cestuses. They sell for 3,000 gold each.

The easiest way to kill Iron Golems, is:
Spoiler:
Just throw plates of curry at it, with the Waiter Skeleton soul, while shootig at it with a gun. They only have low health, so it doesn't take too long

I've gotten all of the best weapons, but I'm still striving to get at least 1 of every weapon.

This game is awesome!

There is an even faster way to make money. In the Lost Village there is a tunnel with five or so torches, just equip the Gold Ring and Black Panther soul and dash through there. You get a lot of $500 bags.

I found a cool way to earn a lot of experience points.

Spoiler:
Requirements:

Flame Demon Soul
Bat Company Soul (to get into the room for the first time)
Mothman Soul
Shaman Ring

In the Pinnacle, go to the room with the 4 Bugbears that are all right next to each other. You need to fly up with the Bat Company Soul to reach this room. This room is right above the save room that is close to the second Dario fight. Anyway, use the Flame Demon Soul to shoot a fireball that should kill all 4 Bugbears in one shot. You should get about 1100 experience this way. Exit to the left and come back and all 4 of them should be revived. Kill them again with a fireball from the Flame Demon Soul and exit left again. Keep on repeating this till you run out of MP. Once that happens, instead of wasting an item, you can exit the room by dropping down in the floor to the right of the room. The save point is to your left after you fall down from the room with the Bugbears. Just save to recover MP and keep on killing more Bugbears.

Scatterheart - That first spoiler block is how I got the fundage for the soul eater ring. It is a pretty efficient moneymaking technique. I like using the Student Witch because you don't have to aim it and it kills everything quickly.

Ah, good stuff! Maybe the Student Witch would've been better than the Ranger Skeleton.
In this PAL version, Frankenstein isn't even called that. He's called "The Creature". How original.

Fabio - That sounds like a really good way for getting experience.
I finally found the last few secret rooms (needed the FAQ), and now have 100% of the map.
I've been working on collecting every single weapon, but I won't be able to, as you need to use a boss soul on a weapon which isn't even the best in its class. I already have the best weapon in that class, and the cons far outweigh the benefits to use another one on a simple weapon

I've gotten every single soul now (besides the boss ones I spent), and I've started Hard Mode. I hope it's not too hard.
I at least hope I'll be able to use Rydain's trick when I get up to that part.
