hello all,
im a n00b and i aint afraid to show it. i have some general questions and though i have a hunch similar ones have prob been asked and answered before i cant seem to find a search for the forums, i figured id give it a shot here.

so i am trying to hack an nes cart, not just the rom, but i would like to be able to actually have a functioning cart in the end. first of all, from what ive gathered so far, i will need the following:
1. an eprom programmer
2. some eproms
3. and a low profile socket for ease of taking chips in/out, should i get this one or this one

am i right about those?

now, i guess im very unsure about the whole process, that is, how i get the asm onto my computer, etc. can i use emulator ROMs to get the code? using a tracer or something like that. then, i am guessing once i get it on the computer, i can just write it onto the chip using the utils the programmer comes with, right?

again, sorry if the questions sound st00pid, but im new to this. thanks for any help you can give.
cheers
Colleen

This is probably best suited for General Emulation so I'm going to bump it over there.

Yeah, your mostly right. Your going to need an eeprom programmer, and a suitable eeprom. The IC socket isnt required, but its probably a good idea. Youll also need a cartridge of course from the origional game. It doesnt have to be from the origional, but since there are so many different types of NES carts it would be a good idea. Do some reading. I doubt you will find a lot of the answers here.

Well I actually first went to nesdev and asked them about this stuff but they all sent me here. So the big question i guess is how i go about getting the code off the cart, can anyone give me a firm answer on this?

also, ive heard that certain carts are much harder because of stuff like mappers, etc. im hoping to do megaman 2/metroid/space invaders, anyone have opionions on which of these would be best?

and does anyone know the difference between those two sockets?

thx again
