I'd go back to before Columbus' time and say I want to sail west. Then when I got to America, I would name it like.. Danielle. And I wouldn't kill all the Indians either.

Yeah, that was funny. He flooded the world, turned everyone into the Flinstones, etc... then made paradise and left because they didn't know what a donut was, just missing the donuts falling from the sky. "Oh, I wish I wish I hadn't killed that fish."

Zer0wned has the best answers, so far. But actually, even if time travel was a possibility, I'd say that it would be impossible to change anything... or rather you would, but it wouldn't matter, because everything is as it is now because if you were to go back and change things, it's already been done... do you see what I'm saying? Maybe not. It's like this. Bob lives in an apartment and makes minimum wage, and hates life. One day, Bob discovers a time machine and a million dollars. Bob goes back in time and gives the money to his past self, so he can use it while he was young and live the high life. Now, if all of that happened, the young Bob would never have experienced a point in his life where he was living in an apartment and making minimun wage... to the younger Bob... Young Bob was walking down the street one day. His older self teleported in front of him, and gave him one million dollars. Young Bob spent the cash as he saw fit, and never lived in an apartment. But if this were so, then "Old Bob's" timeline would cease to exist - and Bob was never poor. All that ever happened was Bob, with his million dollars. To everyone, everywhere, it is entirely normal that Bob is rich. In that case, there was never a time that Bob was poor, that could have possibly been altered. As such, time traveling changed nothing - or rather, it did, but everything is normal because it already happened. If you were to go back to change something, things would be exactly as they are now, because you would have already done it... I hope I explained that clearly. |

And that brings us to the biggest problem with time travel; the endless paradoxes. Since Bob recieved a million dollars from his future self, he would never go back and give himself a million dollars; thus he wouldn't recieve any money, and a few years later would go back and give himself a million dollars... ad infinitum. The other problem is that you can't not change things. By being in the past, you're affecting the world, even if it's only in such a minor way as killing a few germs and using up a bit of oxygen. This may not make any difference if you go back a few years, but the further back you go, the more likely a small change is to have a large effect. Maybe by landing in the past, you step on and kill the first of a new strain of virus, and as a result, the dinosaurs don't go extinct or some such thing. As for going ahead, the future you see won't be what happens, because just by knowing the future, you've changed it. Chances are, you'll do something differently because you know what will happen; thus, you've changed the future. The only safe way to 'travel' through time would be if you could only see the past, and not interact with it, and not see the future at all. (And as long as we're building a machine that can view any point in the past from any physical location, I'd like one that does the same in the present as well. |

I thought of the same flaw that HyperHacker pointed out soon after pointing. I think that what would happen is time would split in two or something, and branch off both ways - what else could it do, huh |
