Hm, that means one chicken lays one egg in one day (or am i incorrect...? ) 9 chickens would lay 9 eggs in one day, so i think they lay 81 eggs in nine days.  But i think there are no one and a half chickens which can lay one and a half eggs! If there would be half chickens, i think they would not be able to lay eggs.LizardKing, i think one and a half chickens would lay 9 eggs in 9 days, so 9 somehow cannot be right... | 9 eggs, because only the whole chickens would lay whole eggs, and and the half chicken would be dead, and the half eggs would be worthless. I know. | 1. 1/2 chickens don't lay eggs. 2. Each chicken lays 1 1/2 eggs every 1 1/2 days. 3. This means each whole chicken lays 1/2 an egg every 12 hours. 4. This means each whole chicken lays 1 egg a day. 5. There are 9 whole chickens, so there are 9 eggs a day. 6. There are 9 days, so the answer is 81 eggs. |

| I can explain it. If 1 1/2 chickens lays 1 1/2 eggs in 1 1/2 days, that means a chicken lays an egg every 1 1/2 days, NOT every 1 day. Think about it - if it takes you and a friend two days to build two fences, that means you each build a fence in two days. The number of chickens present doesn't change the speed at which they lay eggs. 9/1.5 = 6, so 1 chicken lays 6 eggs in 9 days. 6 eggs per chicken x 9 chickens = 54 eggs. | X chickens lay X eggs in 1 1/2 days. For it to be realistically possible, X has to be a natural number. For it to be mathematically sound, X can be any real number. You're assuming that we're claiming a half chicken is present. Nowhere in the problem does it say that that 1/2 chicken and 1/2 egg aren't accompanied by another 1/2 chicken and 1/2 egg... we just didn't measure that other half. | Jagori is correct. If the question were, how many eggs do 4 chickens lay in 4 days, you would end up with fractional (impossible) eggs and you would certainly have a point. However, this is just given as an average rate of which to base your calculations. Just as families are often joked to have "2.5" children. If you were to multiply that by 5,000 families the resultant number would be far more accurate than a mode or rounded mean of 2 or 3 children per family. However I STILL do understand your point, and were I giving out any points, I would surely have given you some. I should think about giving out points.. if I ever come up with more riddles.
