Grey: "Great. Just great. Janus is still missing. I didn't know I pissed him off that badly..."

Grey paced back and forth in the wings of Sim Battle Arena B, where the next round, in which his crew was matched against the rising star Metalman, was about to begin. Kalar leaned against the wall, nursing a wound in his side tenderly. Sion's Keyblades still stung him even now. As it stood, he was in no condition to take Metalman on, which put Grey in a position where he himself might have to enter the battlefield. That'd suck, Grey was never one for fighting and he really wanted to save himself...

Kalar: "It's alright, man... If I have to, I'll go out. I understand what this means to you. Janus just didn't. I'm sorry I let you down in the last round..."

Grey: "No... You didn't let me down. Trust me. I just wish Janus would see that. My intentions were pure, I swear they were..."

Kalar: "Just let it go for now. Janus needs to blow off some steam. He mentioned something about a trip on the Stardust Speedway as he left... He's probably living it up in Sandsalot or Los Royales now even as we speak. Give him a nice vacation. Besides, it looks like your need for a stand-in has already been answered..."

Grey: "What?

.....

.....

Wait, where's Garro?"

Where, indeed. The dark priest stood, his spectacles reflecting the bright sun of a brisk fall day onto the astroturf that lined the arena floor. The crowds cheered at this newcomer, and he stood with his eyes closed in a meditative state, pistols blessed and holstered, and tiny black bible gripped tightly in his hands as his heavy coat kept the autumn winds out. He raised his fist to his chest, nodded his head downward slowly, and chanted...

Garro: "Bless me, oh deity, for today I bring thy power to warfare... Suffering be to thine enemies, and also to mine own. I ask thee, o unnamed lord of mine, to grant me thy power and protection. Show me light and dark, balance the heavens and hells that lay in thy sight to bestow upon me your holy might..."

Garro shook with fear as a soft white light began to glow within his fist. He stood perfectly still, waiting for Metal to enter the field of battle. Power. He had to think. He had to believe. Power...

Grey: "Oh, shit."

* A small wind blew across the arena. While he had lost the last round, his record remained impressive, and his experience would allow him to do even more than before. At exactly 15 feet away in front of Garro, a hole in time and space opened, creating quite a gust and a disorientingly high-pitched screech. In what seemed to be an explosion, it finally concentrated into a blue portal, out of which Metal walked, bathed in a blue glow. Wearing his cape still, and looking insane as usual, he cracked a gigantic grin and eyed the arena. Expecting the biggest challenge from this fight, he looked seriously prepared. Dual AK-47s on his 'belt', various enhancements to his armor to reinforce weak spots, and the unmistakable appearance of some sort of device strapped to his back. He finally noticed Garro... being surprised at the opponent before him. The glow around Metal dissipated, and he slowly rose his right hand to point at Garro. *

"It appears you are to be my next opponent. I must confess, it was embarassing to lose to a young boy... but I shall be ready for anything this time. Let's see if spiritual power can defeat technology!"

* Without giving his foe any more time to react, he glowed again, with the same blue aura. The largest amount of glowing issuing forth from the device roughly duct-taped to his back. *

"With this, I can manipulate time and space. It slows me down somewhat, but it offers greatly enhanced damage capabilities. Let's see what you've got."

* With a loud hum, the machine powered up Metal, who suddenly rose one foot off of the ground. He laughed insanely, hovering and glowing. Then, he began howevering in a circle around Garro, doing complex tricks mid-air. A blue circle was quickly drawn... and suddenly, lines appearing to be spokes in the circle appeared. They then became gigantic 20-feet tall walls of pure energy... which then began to spin. If Garro didn't leap over them, keep up with the spinning, or run out of the whirling deathtrap, he'd be shredded... even outside of the wall, though, it was likely that Metal would begin attacking him some other, equally deadly way. *

Garro: "Okay, okay.... Wings of the Fallen Angel!!!"

As the walls of energy shredded toward him, Garro felt his back grow hotter and hotter, as though rays of light were being fired out of it. In fact, the only thing that came out of it was a pair of spiritual wings! One light, one dark, they spread outward and Garro flew swiftly upward, hovering in the air easily over the mechanical muddle's mysterious machine.

(thinking) 'Okay, priest spells, priest spells... AH!'

Floating above the whirring blades, Garro began a series of chants and gestures, many of which were in a language Metal could never hope to understand. The pages of his bible flipped and waved wildly as a cold wind surrounded him and blew about, flaying his coat to and fro and giving him the appearance of some kind of terrible being, ready to rain terror down upon his inferiors...

"Corrupted heavens, rain down your might!"

The skies darkened, and suddenly, a large bolt of lightning seared down from the skies and straight at Metal AND his contraption!

*BAM! Metal was knocked out of the air, crashing into the ground like a meteorite. The shockwave from the explosion should mean he's dead... right? Wrong. The electrified body of Metal stood up, having taken heavy damage. The contraption is still there, though it also took damage.*

*cough* *cough* "Good shot, there. I should really learn whatever language that was..."

* He rose back, hovering, this time gaining a bit more altitude. The machine engaged again, summoning a small cloud of miniature portals around Metal. These portals, each about the size of a baseball, numbered in the low hundreds. After flashily spinning them around himself, he... *

"DIMENSIONAL SHREDDER!!!"

* The cloud of portals spread out in all directions, filling the arena. Then, at random intervals and directions, they flew at Garro, each one dealing miniscule damage alone but the large amount being a gigantic nuisance and possible hazard if allowed to continue flying at one's body. Meanwhile, Metal hovered around, 1 foot off of the ground, trying to be evasive... although the machine slowed him down, it was sort of herky-jerky in execution. And probably predictable. *

Garro: "!"

He grimaced as the skies became sunny once again, and his wings flashed around himself as he disappeared in a puff of glowing feathers that dissipated almost instantly upon leaving his body. He reappeared a few feet to his left as a barrage of portals flew past where he once was. Another barrage hit him in the side, and he zipped upward, trying to escape their stinging blows. A second puff of black and white feathers, and he was closer to the ground, only to find that the hundreds of portals continued firing at him there, as well...

He hovered a few inches off the astroturf, zooming just ahead of the wave of portals that followed him this time, each portal burying itself in the plastic and rendering that section of the arena unsteppable... Changing directions, he discovered that the portals were beginning to lead their shots -- the hard way. Garro cried out in pain, and instictively did the only thing he could do at the time...

He drew his first pistol, and turned around in midair as another wave of portals launched itself at him. Staying just ahead of the swarm, he took careful aim, focused, and fired. A wide, disproportionately large wave of holy energy blasted out from the barrel of his gun, spreading far and wide and delivering enough energy at that range to completely obliterate the portals that continued to follow him.

One shot wasted. He'd have to take the time to bless it again, which he couldn't afford to lose right now. He had to counterattack, fast!

Burn marks littered his coat and gloved hands, but other than some minor stings here and there, Garro was unharmed... Metal's attack had been reasonably successful, but it lacked the straight-up power to bring HIM out of the skies. Out came the bible again, and Garro chanted another spell...

"Know thine enemy and throw thy rage upon him!"

But, for some reason, nothing happened... Garro's eyes widened, and his heart sank a little as he slammed the small bible shut and shoved it back into his coat. His wings beat against the brisk autumn winds as he pondred the results of his cast... Had the spell failed? Garro looked in wonder at Metal. What was going to happen now?

"You are an excellent runner. But now is the time to put your skills to the test."

* Metal hover-backflipped up into the air, glowing again. This time, though, the energy stayed on him. Suddenly, he phased out of existance on this plane. A few unsettling moments of silence passed.... VOOOSH! VOOSH! VOOOOOSH! A portal ripped open outta nowhere at Garro's left side. Metal flew out of it, charging at Garro from the side with his steel gauntlets. Whether or not that hit, he quickly dissappeared into another portal. Only seconds after that, another portal opened beneath Garro, and Metal flew upwards out of it like a rocket, looking to knock Garro into the air. Like the other portal attack, he vanished again. Then he reappeared behind wherever Garro was and launched a flying kick. Then he dissappeared and phased back in from diagonally above Garro, spinning like a top with his tough titanium arms. After that assault, he landed on the ground in front of his opponent and caught his breath. Had his risky, power-wasting move hurt Garro? *

Garro: "Runner nothing, I--OOF!"

The first portal! A hard flying tackle slams Garro in the side, and he's knocked off course. His flight path, however, is in such an obtuse direction that Metal's second strike is unintentionally dodged. The third strike, the flying kick, launches Garro back into the air and facing upward. There's a loud, wet cracking noise as Garro's chiropractor suddenly loses his job. However, as Metal began his titanium tornado, Garro regained his bearings...

"Nice trick!"

He too disappeared, again in a puff of ethereal feathers, and as Metal hit the ground and began to catch his breath, Garro reappeared beside him, a glowing white pistol in one hand and his aching, but surprisingly more flexible, back in the other.

"But I can do it, too."

Seconds (which Metal MAY want to utilize right about now) later, a large blast of Holy energy was fired out of Garro's second pistol and a bright flash blinded all that dared look at the awesome power of the heavens that Garro was so audacious as to utilize. At point blank range, too! Garro's other hand, holding onto his back, also began to glow with a mysterious white light...

"This calls for a snap decision!"

* Metal, with almost no time to think, flew... INTO THE ATTACK. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, he just did the opposite of dodging. Now, of course, this dealt even more damage to him and his cybernetic exoskeleton... *

"Holy Meteor!"

* At which point Garro should be freaked out. Metal, still burning, in fact, on fire with holy energy, and blitzing with a combination of electricity, interdimensional power, and just plain old fire, was flying at him, at point blank range, giving Garro only a fraction of a second to react. Metal, sporting an extremely high tolerance for pain, had apparently taken damage but not felt it as much as he should... and now he's about to give Garro a taste of his own medicine! *

Garro: "Should be coming up right about...."

Garro shoved his pistol back into its holster and closed his coat around himself as his angel wings wrapped around his torso and partially shielded him from Metal's meteor-like assault. The flaming tackle rammed him and took him backward, rolling with Metal's blow until Garro was carried far enough to skid along the ground and beneath Metal as Metal passed overhead. He rolled a few times along the ground, and staggered to his feet. His wings were tattered, burned, scorched, whatever words you could come up with for them. Ethereal feathers lined the ground where he had been driven along, and dissipated into nothingness seconds after leaving Garro's body. Garro shook on his feet as he grinned, snapped his fingers, and jerked a little bit as his wings retracted back into his back.

As for his other hand, the one gripping his back, it was no longer glowing white, but instead had discharged a touch of White Fire into Garro's back. The injury Metal had given Garro had twisted his back in such a way that, when the bones were repaired, Garro cracked it a few times, and it felt better than it had felt in years.

".....N...Now..."

Of course, there had to be a counterattack in store, too. As Garro took out his bible and began the rituals needed to re-bless his pistols, a numerous series of flame strikes suddenly rained down from the skies onto the battlefield. That spell Garro had chanted earlier had finally decided to start working. So much for long cast times, eh?

"And so the holy father met his match... machinery."

* With those cryptic words, Metal focused his energies into the flaming rain of death. He crossed his arms, and immediately took several hits, dead-on. But as his name had implied, this was intentional... his dodging ability sub-par, but his ability to take damage being excellent... he managed to shave some points off of that damage, but wear was beginning to show on his cybernetic body. Several blue-and-wire wirery things could be clearly seen on Metal's arms, and some sparks did fly. Thankfully, the duct tape kept his main device together, although it was on fire. Metal paid no heed to this, though, as he rose off of the ground yet again. *

"Allow me to introduce you to my secret weapon."

* Suddenly, the world blurred for both fighters. Metal suddenly dropped and fell to the floor... but he knew what he was doing. For a soul resided in that most mechanical of a body, and with the help of the dimensional machine, he had managed to enter the realm of spirit, in which one sees things as they 'truly' are. All that Garro would probably notice is the death of his opponent, however only a physical one; lingering energies would tell the truth, that he was not dead. Meanwhile, in the spiritual realm, the spirit of Metal, one without cybernetic enhancements or any material objects, but merely his fists, suavely walked up to the unsuspecting Garro (Who only saw the corpse of Metal--though he'd probably realize something was up quickly) and... reached out for his head. At this point, things would become easily observable to both realms. Metal's spirit, clearly human, grabbing Garro by the head... and by that, attempting to posess him. Regardless of whether Garro was able to resist or even shoot the maleovent being which accosted him, the whole attempt was likely to deal damage to his spirit directly, something far harder to heal than wounds. But what of the metallic shell which once housed this plane-hopping maniac? We shall see... *

Garro: "Big mistake, Metal..."

The moment Metal tried to posess Garro, Garro's spirit could feel the pull...

He snapped to attention. His eyes, body, clothes, all began to glow white as he hastily interrupted his blessing ritual and focused his energies inward. Metal's view of the spiritual world would of course be blurred, and rather than having to force his way inside of Garro's mind, Metal was actually sucked right in.

Once his spirit was inside of Garro's body, Metal's consciousness would awaken to a world unlike any he had ever seen...

Demons resided everywhere, running, screaming, ripping, tearing, hedonistic mockeries of living beings whose only purpose was to destroy the other inhabitants of the realm. The angelics.

They were not nearly as clean and neat as the books suggested. Their wings were bloodied and torn, their armor battered and bruised. Along the barren ground jets of hell flame and white fire erupted in random spots, threatening each side with their blazes.

Each side raged madly against the other... The realm was a wasteland of pain, suffering, and anger. And yet, above it all, one being stood, strengthened by the resolve of both sides to defeat the other...

It was Garro. His wings in full form again, he floated above the battlefield, looking down at Metal. Gone was his coat, his kevlar clothes, the form he assumed in the physical world. His frail materal body was instead replaced by a magnificent being, melded of light and darkness, twisting and perverting both so that each side accomplished the exact opposite of their original intent. One black wing, one white wing. Dark armor, shining white aura. Black eyes, white skin. Everything about Garro in this place suggested contradiction, yet all that was true was strength. He placed himself in front of the intruder, and spoke. His voice, though unchanged from his physical form, was somehow deeper and more commanding, as though the very terrors and hopes themselves lay within it.

"There is no "holy father" here in my mind..."

He raised his hand, and the whiteness that surrounded him glowed ever brighter around it...

"All that I truly believe in is myself."

The hand pointed at Metal...

"Now, leave this place. Never come back."

The whiteness exploded outward at Metal, and when it cleared, Metal would find himself thrown from the spiritual world, back in his physical body. Garro stood before him in his own physical body, pistols glowing but safely in their holsters. The fearsome being was nowhere to be seen. Only a fragile human. He was breathing heavily, though the reason for such a state was only known to the two fighters.

Garro: "What did you see? I hope it taught you a lesson..."

* Rising up yet again, Metal's body was alive despite having been dead by his own hand moments earlier. Despite the damage from that spiritual trip, he had learned much about his opponent... very useful information. *

"While your mind is strong, I have learned that you, too, appear to be balancing the powers of good and evil in your mind. Although you were too strong a mind to posess, I sensed tension... tension... which can be snapped."

* Metal began powering up, yet again. He really was abusing his body for this battle. However, it had been revealed that his ability to separate from his body was how he managed to endure such pain, making his actual body only needing to operate; it could be in as much pain as possible but he did not listen. He floated up again. This time, the generator exploded off of his back. But... he was still floating... some sort of blue glow could be seen on his feet. *

"How lucky of me, to assimilate the ability of that device into my being. Alas, it has damaged me much, and I will have to be more careful."

* Mentally fatigued, Metal opted for a more traditional type of battle; he whipped out his famed DVD launcher and spun it up. *

"Fire... con dios."

* At which point he opened fire with the rapidly spinning, razor sharp DVDs of gigli at his opponent's extremities. He also started defensively bobbing and weaving, making targeting difficult. However, sparks and exposed wiring showed off his damaged body, and he seemed weary. *

Garro: "Tch... really. Increase my agility..."

And the Garro said it, and it was so. The DVDs fired at deadly speed, but Garro's was even deadlier. He threw his coat from his shoulders, and instantly about 220 pounds of solid kevlar made a thudding impact on the soft, artificial ground. That, combined with the blessing he recieved from the unknown force that governed his beliefs, gave him the go he needed to easily move out of the way of the torrent of discs. He moved like a ghost, lightly stepping from blade to blade and moving with motions that seemed like almost a frolic; a pistol was drawn, and another.

A step and a blur, a circle about Metal, and suddenly Garro was in his face again, but he didn't fire. He just grinned, zipped away to a range of about ten feet, and then fired both pistols.

What came out, however, was not holy in nature. It was good, old fashioned copper/steel alloy. A spray of it, to be precise. Several dozen bullets fired in the space of several seconds by two of the fastest fingers in the Arena.

"Fast fingers... slow bullets."

* Arrogantly, Metal outstretched his right hand. A strong energy field soon appeared around it, attracting the bullets and even the discarded DVD fragments together into a swirling maelstorm of energy which orbited his hand. *

"Energy Crush!"

* The energy suddenly became attracted to Garro, having been reversed in charge. The resulting deadly magnetic attraction sent the aura of sharp and fast-swirling metal objects at the priest. Talk about recycling; the projectiles had enough charge to fly into Garro, bounce off of him, and hit him again for at least 5-6 times each. While Garro was preoccupied by the metallic madness, Metal began charging up energy, which had the nice special effect of himself being surrounded by a pillar of blue light. Purty... and easy to aim at. *

Garro: "Bulletproof coat..."

The bullets seared toward him, but he didn't even bother moving. He just pulled his hat over his face, put his hands behind his back, and let the projectiles fly into him. When it all stopped, he raised the hat, shook the bullets out of his clothing, and smiled.

"...suit, AND hat. So what else are you up to?"

He pulled out his bible and prepared a counterspell to whatever Metal was turning out.

"Fancy another go..."

This'd take some time to cast.

"Another Gate."

* After saying this non sequitor remark, Metal suddenly put his palms into the air. The energy suddenly vanished from around Metal... but not before revealing the sinister purpose of that charging. Almost immediately, a portal appeared on Garro's right... and then another one on his left. Both pulled at him... in fact, they pulled EXTREMELY hard, attempting to shred him between the two portals and teleport the remains to two different planes of existance. Metal, however, was not done. He didn't want to look foolish if Garro was also immune to this, as Garro had been immune to stranger things before. He floated up, and then quickly fired off a bolt of blue energy from each hand into each portal. The result? The portals shredded the energy, and then began shooting lightning bolts between one another. Metal, attempting to be prepared this time, was sure that if the dimensional pull didn't hurt, the lightning would. He also felt drained from all of that effort... but refused to back down. Hopefully mind would continue to hold control over matter. *

Garro: "Aaaaaaaaaaugh!!!!"

Garro could feel his body being ripped at from both sides... An attack of this magnitude at so early in the battle? It was only fair, of course. Call Lightning was a very advanced spell, it was clear this battle was not one where the stops would be pulled out at the end. And his own holy blasts had destroyed all chance of a buildup that Garro was hoping to achieve. It was time to bring out the big guns.

Or rather, it would have been time to bring out the big guns if Garro had counted on the lightning, which chose then to sear through his clothing, the only thing holding his body together from being reduced to a pair of bloody halves imprisoned in a dimensional rift. He could feel his very arms being torn from their sockets, all the more intense because of Garro's frail build. When it was over, he collapsed to the dirt, panting on his hands and knees, knowing he was lucky to be alive.

A bead of sweat dripped down his face as a drop of blood escaped Garro's mouth... Bleeding. He had bitten his tongue in the shock. Only the tip of it, it looked like it would be alright, but the taste of blood in his mouth shocked him into realizing that he was getting a royal asskicking. He got up, wiping the blood from his lips and swallowing the rest. But, then he came up with something...

The blood of a priest.... He took it from his lip, and chuckled a little to himself as he let it drip to the ground...

"At last, you show your weakness. However, it was not without me having to resort to extremes.... you were getting the better of me for a while there."

* Metal, eying the blood and knowing Garro's ability to pull deadly attacks out of nothing, immediately shifted to the defense. He flew around in a circular arc behind his opponent, and then got into a defensive stance. With a bit more humming, a blue shield surrounded him. It drained more of his precious little electrical power, but it would be worth it. If his mind was correct about some vague religious revenge being related to shedding the blood of priests, he could afford a little energy drain in exchange from protection against utter smiting. He did continue moving, though... attempting to keep the priest between him and the blood as if the priest would work as some sort of human shield. His mind was working on the illogical and strange assumptions... but he had not the energy to conjure up an awesome encore. Even while projecting the field, he was able to begin recovering energy... just slowly. He eyed his opponent nervously, with blood, oil, and gears about his body. His once-smooth armor was cracked and had several blackened spots; and what wasn't blackened was dull. A few areas revealed pale flesh, flesh which had hid from the light of the sun for years. The gaze through his visor was one of unearthly cool, as if he had eyes which could pierce through existance and see through even his own self. *

"May my cursed sight never fail me!"

* An enigma, this Metal Man was. Here he was, fighting a holy priest, a known associate of the legendary being known only as Grey. All... for a tournament whose prize he knew nothing about and cared neither for it's existance or possible wealth. He lived... to fight here. His struggle fighting the supernatural with technology was epic, and his mind clearly insane. For what God-fearing man would fight God's messenger? Of course. One who did not believe. It might insinuate in Garro's mind that this person did not believe that a holy being brought the energy, that there was no spirit behind those dark eyes, that this being was merely energy and machinery coupled in an unholy union. The psychological existance of a being made solely to battle was overwhelming enough; but the way he took damage with no qualm and dished out reality-altering attacks like potato chips are eaten by couch potatoes was beyond surreal. Let alone the fact that he moved like a rabid disco dancer and clearly displayed eccentricity--he was sentient, whatever he was. A smug look seemed to omnisciently pervade off of his helmet, permanently frozen in cold and uncaring metal. He was a man of steel, because he took all that came at him with a mechanical precision and heartlessly attacked those whom he was chosen to fight. Even though he was protecting himself, any deep psychological analysis would reveal that he was taunting all that was holy, that he thought he could trick and find holes in the strategy of someone backed by a perfect being. That he thought he could stop the associate of a legend with mere logic, that he could defy logic and time with that infernal, all-piercing gaze. Whatever it was, it was certainly spooky, bordering on the paradoxial. *

Garro: "The blood of a priest... It means nothing more than the divine protection of one more person has failed..."

The blood boiled on the ground as it sank like acid deep into the astroturf... It was not holy.

"Failed... Because I do not believe in the sense that you think I do. God... What ruckus. The nature of my power lies not in my ability to call down holy might..."

He raised his hand, bible clenched... It burst into flames as he blinked a terrible, reddening eye. The pages flared outward, and encircled him in a quickly darkening sphere of blazes. Black fire, wrought only from burning an item blessed by a deity. Sacreliege, now?

"....But in the use of the unknown to take advantage of those who do not understand."

Garro understood. Metal, he knew, did not. Metal considered Garro a priest. A representative of a higher power, which would imply that Metal believed a higher power existed. Garro was no priest. Priests have faith.

In fact, Garro's true power was driven by others... Others who had faith. Faith in their friends, in their families, in whatever higher powers existed... He chose freely from his denominations. Anyone who believed in anything hard enough could aid him. It was simply a matter of accessing the power. Holy water could burn undead flesh if enough people needed it to, but when nobody cared if that status had been conferred upon it, it could be drank with impunity, like cheap wine.

Garro had seen that so many people had faith in the world that at any given point he could simply assume someone believed that what he was doing could happen. That miracles were possible, that great disasters were believable.

His firey strike was delayed... Not many people believed that meteors would come crashing down from the heavens, but some do, and that was enough for him. That the speed of Hermes himself could be conferred upon an individual was believed by many who had seen the fastest men and women in the world run. That miracles could happen, that humans could be healed from crippling wounds by a representative of some higher power was a given for so many people, Garro could snap his fingers and watch an entire town have the black plague lifted.

Garro had no faith of his own, so he borrowed it from others...

With that book burned, the black fire would consume him, he knew. But there were others who believed, as well. Others who believed in much darker secrets than those of the white heavens, of gods and goddesses. Those who believed in more demonic means, who believed that slavery and servitude was all that existed in those theologies. It was that belief that Garro chose to access...

The black flames condensed around his right hand, forming a burning blade that Garro held tightly in his hands.

He gripped it by the hilt, and with a mighty heave, turned it about and promptly drove it into himself.
