Well, I never thought I would see the day, but the time has come when thinking about Javascript doesn't make my stomach feel like turning over anymore! Lately I've been conducting a few exercises in javascript tomfoolery on my downtime from school, php, dxoii hacking, and going out. The language itself has always seemed lacking (especially in terms of class support and a few other large annoyances--look for some nice fixes in javascript 2.0) but I'm only interested, like most, with it's application as interface to Mozilla's DOM. I've mostly been experimenting with Firefox Extensions and just generally exploring the Mozilla framework. I haven't put out anything useful or new, but I did recently throw a few demos online. They were mostly either entirely random, or a testing area for techniques or features I am using in other projects. They were fun to make, and I was wondering what you guys thought of them (the pages themselves and my website have a tiny bit more detailed information on them, but not much. It's a pretty boring site). Postit Notes. Fun proof-of-concept I still don't have any real use for.. I might not ever, but I'm sure trying to come up with something. This one was the most fun to make. gmail-like file attachment. An extremely small script. I had always liked the Gmail dynamic file attachment, so I decided to clone the feature for my own use collapsing and expanding elements. Simple. It's been done a few hundred times a few hundred ways, but here is mine. This is currently outdated. I simplified the method used and made the placing and ordering of elements less restrictive in the newer version. There is also another page I have yet to put online since it required a much more lengthy writeup that documents the mini-project from start to finish. Which really isn't that long, but I barely ever find the willpower to get cracking on it. Still, I've been telling myself that in the least I need to get it up sometime mid-week, so I just might get around to it. I mostly develop toward Javascript, but always try to add JScript support when I complete a solution. Currently the Postit Notes support only Javascript, but I do plan on adding JScript handling when I'm done, or have actually found something to use it for. Either way, I just think it's good practice to be able to work on all applications from a practical standpoint, although I dislike it's effects on the reliabilty and uniformity of the platform. Anyone else here do any messing around with ECMAScript-based web environments? |

that post it note thing is awesome, I think if it was done right, and saved, it could be used online for some kind of mass note system for programming and stuff.... the rest is really neat, and I think I gotta learn javascript some day. | |||

[bump] Anyone heard of AJAX? It's so awesome, even Google uses it. (for those who don't know, AJAX allows you to send/recieve POST/GET info without making a page refresh; digg uses it) |

Dcahrkos: thanks windwaker: indeed. I actually had a small working example of a cross-platform AJAX script being integrated with an Acmlm board. All it did was check if a user name existed at registration time. I'm also fooling around with a cleaner login system for my own forum+ software, as well as for a few other features that just might see the light of day sometime |
