Well, I was 12 and there was this river and I came across....

Nah, I'm kidding.

In all actuallity, I wouldn't have sex with any chick who was over 24 hours dead. I mean, then it's just gross.

Alright, new rule so we're all happy: 8 to 80, under 20 days dead, amirite?

(is that from something? that's one of those weird things my dad says a lot)

Some people are really mature at 11, others aren't mature at 40. And yet, we need to put a standard age. Therefore, since you are talking ONLY about consensual sex, I will say 18 is the magic number. It's the voting age, after all. Now, the voting age, drinking age, and gambling age probably shouldn't have any disparity, but that's a different issue.

I think 16 is a better age than 18. 14 is far too young in my opinion, it's that age where kids fall into depression, make stupid choices, generally grow up a bit. By 16, I'd say people are wise enough to make their own decision, and for those that don't give a crap, they'll do it anyway. 18 is pushing it.. listening to kids around my school talk and brag, it seems most have lost their virginity and they're my age (16-17). The laws don't stop them.. so why not make them better for everyone?

Going against the any age option... who's heard of the 13 year old girl who's pregnant because she had consensual sex? Even if it wasn't forced upon her.. 13 is not okay. She's not ready to be a mom, if that baby even makes it.

*hem hem*

It dosen't matter...

The age is 18 in America. I lost my virginity at 16. My gf at the time was 15. Basically, only if something goes awry will somone cry foul. And it is and should be especially foul if there is an age differential. And that, essentially, is what the laws do.

They only really do harm when some arsehole (male or female) gets mad because so and so cheated and THEN goes to the authorities to hurt, but that can't be avoided, and also when someone gets pregnant and, having obvious proof, punish the girl or guy or both. That is just idiodic. They need every bit of money and time to try and raise a baby at that age, so that is the most hurtfull thing about the laws, probably.

I lost mine when I was 14, but I'm one willing to look back and say "hm, that wasn't a good idea." Especially considering it was unprotected, I got lucky... REALLY lucky (in more than one way, she was just some random girl, but she was hawt ) that she didn't get pregnant, or that I didn't catch anything.

Sure underage sex laws aren't strongly enforced, but there are a lot of laws that are here for the sole reason to try to stop us from doing dumb shit to ourselves (or partner, in this case). Enforced or not. If an unenforced law stops even a measly 10% of teenage pregnancies, then I think it's getting something good done.

But really now, this isn't about you**, or your girlfriend, or responsibility from either or both of you, or your rights. No, not at all. It's about the parents. Offspring are basically a couple steps up from pets. You're property with a lot of responsibility until you're outta the house and on your own (or 18+... living at home...). The law is protecting their property, which is you.

**Generically speaking, specific addressing not intended

16. It's always been that way in RI, we've never had any problems with it. People make stupid decisions beneath the guise of "maturity" around here all the time: I'd be more concerned with our rising drug problems than I would with our kinda sorta leveling off sex problems. Besides, let the fuckers do what they want, see what mistakes they make. I learned that the hard way, and I'm glad I never made any *bigger* mistakes than the ones I already have.

I mean seriously, if you're in a relationship when you're 16 or something, what are the odds that you're going to have it last for ten-odd years AND stay married? Not too high, so in the back of your mind, you're always thinking "might as well enjoy ourselves, might as well enjoy ourselves" until you really ARE mature enough and old enough to settle down. Before that, you'll fuck 'til the dawn comes and still have the audacity to veil it with nothing but a shadow of love and maturity. Genius plan, 'cause you get laid and everyone's happy at the time. Hmph.

That's actually pretty true. People will have sex regardless, which brings to question, what is the purpose of laws regarding consensual sex? If I understood correctly, they're to give legal basis for defense of minors who are sexually abused by older individuals, but couldn't that fall under rape and/or corruption of a minor instead?

For the record, I'm against pedophilia. I agree that that probaly should fall within rape laws.

I'll play devil's advocate here and ask, what if the younger individual consents to sex with the older?

Well, I'd say it's not a crime, but all of that is conditional evidence. Fact is the older person will get likely blamed, deserving or not. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Biological age is not a problem. Mental age, however, is extremely important. Rape of those who can't really 'decide for themselves' (though there are many under the limit who can, but what to do?) seems to be the real reason behind the age limit, so more power to it, though it doesn't seem to do its job very well with any of us .

I go back to my old point.... if the child isn't deemed worthy to vote.... why should they be ready to have sex? or drink alcohol.... or drive a car?

sure, mental readiness is the key factor... but you can't control that at all.... rules have to be generalized for the majority not the select few that think they are ready when they know next to nothing about what is actually going on

In quite a few countries there is no drinking age. Also, most people who did vote didn't care/know about the issues.

Most of them were probably just concerned with getting laid ASAP, and most of them probably won't til they're in their 20s anyway, which makes their choice moot.

Okay. My personal beliefs about sex, voting, moving away from home, ect... it all revolves around my opinions of nature. I believe that a person should be considered an adult at age 15 for female and age 16 for male, generally. Relative sexual maturity. We as a species prolong the nuturing process to the point where when a male is at his sexual peak... he's still most likely living with his mom and dad.

My general liking of A.O.C. is a bit complicated and has to do with age groups. My preferance would be age 18 with a three-year difference margin. Meaning, if I'm 16 and you're 18, I can give concent. I can't if you're 28. However, due to the nature of the polling, I have to say 16 for all sexes. And I also disagree with differences in concent levels between different sexual relations. I mean, Ontario used to have a rule where a guy can give concent to a girl when he was 16, a girl could give concent to a guy when she was 16, a girl could give concent to a girl when she was... 16, I think, or it might be 14. But a guy couldn't give concent to another guy until he was 18. Granted, there was a legitimate reason - the increased dangers/pain of male/male relations - I think concent should be as it is now, 16 universal.
