Fans of the legendary "FINAL FANTASY" series can rejoice. The fourth installment of the wildly popular series will be published by Nintendo and available on Dec. 12 for Game Boy(R) Advance SP and Game Boy(R) Micro.

The GBA version of this classic adventure includes 18 towns and castles, dozens of magical spells and hundreds of monsters, weapons and items to help players on their quests. The game features the astounding music, challenging adventures and interesting storyline that are the hallmarks of the "FINAL FANTASY" franchise. Additional game elements also have been added to enhance the Game Boy Advance version.

Players can expect 30 to 40 hours of playing time as they journey on land, on sea and in the air, and explore new towns, caves and mountains in their attempt to recover stolen crystals. Twelve different characters with new abilities, spells and items join and leave the party at different parts of the quest to keep the game fresh.

So... where's FF3 DS?

Anyways, this is a bit of a surprising announcement since the game's only being announced... oh, 3 months before release. I'm guessing Square Enix will have the game on display at E3, since this one is a bit out of the blue. Can't see it being much more than a straight port unless they surprise us with a new dungeon/a few tweaks.

Oh well. Time to play FF4 again come December. This'll be around my 5th or 6th time.

Shit, I ain't gonna bother unless there's something noticeable added (no little tweaks, I want new dungeons and shit like in DoS - but not the nerfed difficulty). I rarely have occasion to play my GBA outside of my house, and when I'm here I've got FFIV on Playstation... then again, my PS1 card has very little space, and I would love to save most of that for FFT and Front Mission 3, so maybe I'll get it anyway.

But if they nerf the difficulty like in DoS...

(Twelve, eh? Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Palom, Porom, Tellah, Yang, Edward, FuSoYa, Edge, Kain... maybe htey're counting Young Rydia and Adult Rydia seperately.)

They already did nerf the difficulty... Two different ways, in fact. I'm sure you remember about how the old US version was easier than the Japanese one, but the Japanese EasyType was even easier than that one.

Heh... Final Fantasy 4 was the only one I ever beat. It's a rather enjoyable game... Hopefully it's a port of the Wonderswan version and not the SNES/PSX one, though. Much better graphics there, and I don't think there are any other differences.

You're right. But I'm hoping we at least get the PSX version's difficulty. Not to say that even that one was 'hard', but it's better than the SNES one.

And here's where I come in and say "WTF"?

I played the game on an emulator WAY back like 5-6 years ago.
Then bought FF: Chronicles and beat it again.

I noticed like, aboslutely -no- difference in level of difficulty. FFIV was not hard at all, heck, I beat Zeromus alone with Cecil (Zeromus killed off my entire party almost at the start, but since I had leveled up Cecil in solo-mode he was WAY ahead of everyone else, so he was much stronger).

Seriously, every single time I see people praise the FFIV Hard Type version or mention it being better, I just say to myself "What?"

Meh, maybe I'm just too much of a leveling bitch?

Anyways ...

Considering I just bought the SNES version, and how I haven't touched my DS since oh, probably before the summer, I doupt I'll get this.

Edit: Tamarin, I was blowing up at you (just to clerify), but yeah, I honestly didnt' read your entire post above this, sorry.

... but still, I have seen people in the past praise the Hard Type version, which again, in my opinion was nothing special.

There are enough incarnations of the game as it is. Let's go over them all!
  • SNES original hardtype - Japanese version
  • SNES easier than the hardtype - Japanese version
  • SNES United States version, renamed to FFII in Nintendo's infinite wisdom
  • Wonderswan Color - port of the original hartype
  • Playstation - port of the original hardtype, a couple cinema scenes added

Now the GBA is gonna get one too?! ENOUGH OF FFIV GIMMAH FFIII!!! *shot*

Didn't the Wonderswan Color version get newer graphics?

But yeah ... I'm with Colleen and Lenophis on this ... I want FFIII!!!

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm with them too on FFIII, but let's be realistic here. We haven't gotten it yet, and it's been what, 10, 15 years? Think it's gonna happen anytime soon?

BTW, didn't the US SNES version not even have all the characters skills? Tellah's Recall and, I think, the Twins' Twin spells were removed, IIRC... granted neither were particularly useful, but...

I couldn't say. I just started playing the game basically (and with the little time that I have, it could be awhile before I beat it).

Maybe it's just me though, but the translation seems pretty bad. There was already a few beaten files on the cartridge, so I played on from there (The Moon Palace, or whatever it was called) and a lot of the dialogue seemed ... off.

I just don't remember it being that bad in the PSX version, was that one fixed up a little bit? It wouldn't surprise me, because there's a few differences between FFVI SNES and FFVI PSX also.

You know they're going to give FF3 the port it deserves if they're working on it so long.

I figure it'll be Hard Type, maybe a few tweaks here and there. I'm still surprised because usually Nintendo and Square Enix DON'T announce games 3 months before release. So it's a bit of a WTF.

The Twin spell was left alone, but pretty much every other skill was removed, making most characters a lot more similiar. Bleh.

They removed Yang's kick skill, but he still uses it in the cut scene when you first see him.

Yang still has his kick skill in the US Final Fantasy 2 for SNES.
Palom and Porom still had Twin, but they both had another skill I believe that was removed.

You know aside...did anyone ever level Palom and Parom up to 60 just to get the best spells?

Anyways, unless they do something like DoS, I don't envision it being too great. Guess they had to eventually re-make it though.

Sounds good, at least to me. I can wait for III, I know its comming, this is just an extra little goody.

Cecil (1) Kain (2) Rydia (3) Rosa (4) Edward (5) Yang (6) Palom (7) Porom (8) Tellah (9) Cid (10) Edge (11) FuSoYa (12) (You missed Cid Tam)

No new character, but from what I can tell, I'm only hoping for something good here... "Additional game elements also have been added to enhance the Game Boy Advance version."

Alright, the reason everyone praises the hard type version was because they don't level excessively. Did you notice all your characters were dead except the one you didn't power level, or did that escape you?

Really, this is my favorite for game play, anyone who says it doesn't require stratigy, blah blah blah, niether do the others. There is a way to beat every FF game with any reasonable party. Stratigy just makes it easier in certain games (like FFIII). Then again, this was my first RPG, so I'm a lot biais.

Sure, maybe a relative point, but everything aside from the final boss (and I hardly single-power-leveled until the end of the game) the majority of the game was easy. Bahamut, the Underworld, everything.

No, it didn't escape my grasp.

Something along the lines of DoS (in terms of new gameplay and things) would be nice though, in my opinion.

FFIV??? AGAIN??? How many ports does this motherfucker need? And who the hell is still designing GBA games? I seriously thought they would have moved on to concentrating on DS stuff. Weird.

If I buy it, its only for collection purposes (but of course I'll play and beat it too)

The japanese games don't count and even the wonderswan does not count because it was release in only japan, so this is going to be the third time it will be out in America. I agree, I would like FF6 to be on gameboy advance and FF5.

Kefka: Technically speaking, the DS is Nintendo's "third" system; they never said it would replace the GBA, although it looks like they might be rethinking that at least short-term (until the next GB).

The Twin spell sucked anyway; most of the time one or both of them were dead before they finished preparing it. DarkWave really wasn't all that good either, even though it looked and sounded cool.

I hope they do a decent job with it, although I already own the SNES FF2 legally and at least 2 versions of ROMs on my computers. Granted Tales of Phantasia was one of the most tech-heavy SNES games and FF4 was one of the lightest, but the GBA version of TOP was much weaker than the SNES version.

Should be interesting to see if FF3j for the DS ever comes out, or even for the GBA; it's the only FF game that can't be legally played in English.
