I thought it would be a good idea to let the board have more languages like German, French, Spanish and may some other ones, because the users may could understand it better and may visit more often, but that's just me. The idea itself is very good IMO and I could translate the board into german, if this will ever get implemented. What do you think of it?

I like the idea, but I don't think it'd work out in the end Translating the board wouldn't be too big of a chore, if it wasn't for the posts.

Let's say the board was translated into German, and a bunch of people registered, but only spoke / read German. It'd be awfully hard, if not impossible for them to post anything in threads that they can't understand. Then again, let's say they wanted to post in a thread asking for opinions on some screenshots of a hack someone is making. That wouldn't be very difficult, as what they want to write about is a couple pictures and not text, but then the creator of the thread may not be able to understand what that person said

A translation of the board base (forum descriptions, main page, and the like) could very well entice those people to join this board, but once they see that a majority of the threads are in English, it'd likely discourage them from posting.

Overall, it's a good idea, but unless you're able to find some way to work around 99% of the posts here being in English, you may be in a bit of trouble I'm not trying to say that not speaking English is bad or anything, but that might be something to think about

Jesper made a Swedish translation of Acmlm board for a little board he hosted. Dunno what the address to it was though.

And well, I don't see it's needed. Since all the forums here are in English, althought a foreign languages forum would be nice.

I made a German translation of AcmlmBoard 1.92
The thing is - even if we made a foreign language forum - what would be the topics in it ?
"Hallo, ich bin neu hier!!" - and also having counter+1 too ...

What would nice, might be a generalized support for language packs - so if you planned running a translated version, you won't need to update all files by hand or duplicate entries in some cases (thread.php and editthread.php, register.php and editprofile.php)

I don't meant a translation of the posts, only for the Menu, FAQs and the other things.

Yeah, but if you don't translate the posts (and with current technology I don't think we'll be doing that) it's kinda pointless.

Whatever about posts... Some board have forums for different languages. Actually, what may be useful in this language would be a multilanguage support. You'd just select your language in your profile.
But that'd be a lot of work for not much (since pretty much everyone is used to English), and because there are much more important things that need to be fixed or added to the board first. Low priority.

Translating the FAQ into a few different languages might be a good idea. Maybe some people ignores it because they can't understand it?

Now that's a good idea. I can imagine someone who speaks English poorly or not at all not understanding it and simply ignoring it, or even worse, being confused as hell by Babelfish's version.

I honestly wonder how much of the current FAQ contains information that is worthless. I know that some of the stickies in the newbie forum are not very adequate for this board as a whole either (especially the video).

I totally agree, using that flash as an actual guide for this board is useful. It's fun for a chuckle, but that's it. Plus with all of the reminders dogging newbies to read the board FAQ.. yeah, there's no need. It's gone.
This is the thread I am referring to, just in case you're curious or if most people disagree with my action and believe it should be restickied.

There's a reason for this suggestion (about languages, not about you thinking before typing) to be made, and if you can't contribute to the topic at hand in a vaguely meaningful way, do not post. It's almost like you just read the topic and nothing else, and it's really getting on my nerves. Others have noticed this too, though not all of them are staff.

I apologize (to the other mods) for the fact that it may appear I'm overstepping my bounds, but someone had to say something.

Moving along from that...

Translating the FAQ could potentially be very beneficial, but we'd need people that could write it in each other language you wanted - and would be willing to actually sit down and do so. This seems like stating the obvious, but... the willingness to do so has to be there. A translator won't cut it (if it would, we wouldn't have to do anything), and a few classes in high school won't do it either.

Lucky for us, we have many active users who are fluent in other languages. Not to volunteer someone of course, but I don't think it will pose a big problem. There are bound to be a few people willing to translate.

It may be a bit of a hassle to have people update other languages of the FAQ every time the english one gets changed.. but that doesn't happen often.

It's a good idea.

This is the old German FAQ of my translated AcmlmBoard v1.92.
I don't know how the PHP syntax was changed in the later distributions.

But really, translating the FAQ is a couple of minutes to do it
Edit: Fixed two damn typos.

Why complicate things if we can all speak English here?

Not everyone speaks English as a first language. A FAQ in languages other than English would be helpful for those users.

twilightAcmlmBoard (tAB)! It'll be horribly behind and fucked over by strange modifications to it, but then they'll make tAB v 2.0 and it'll be updated, but then they'll screw it up anyway.

We used to have a languages forum. It was active for a while...then one day Spinal left. And then there was no one to converse with...And besides, most of it was "HOW DO I SAY CRYSTAL TIARA IN JAPANESE GAIZ!?". There were many respectable threads, like one gentleman posting basic phrases in Russian. Offering cyrillic lettering, a regular alaphabetical lettering and the pronunciation key.

I wouldn't mind to see that returned. But as they say in Latin semper ubi sub ubi.
