Are you asking for an existing RPG Engine to use? Or are you asking how to make an RPG engine?

If you're looking for the former, you're probably better off using a pre-built game system (Like RPG Maker). Sine the whole point to going with C++ or any other programming language is that you write the thing yourself (mostly) so that it's just the way you want it. If you're looking for a existing product you can just slap a game together with, you're better off with RPG Maker.

Yeah, I have RPG Maker.

I want a source code of a RPG engine. If you compile it, it won't work, you need to add maps and stuff...ya know?

RPG engines typically will compile without maps and stuff -- as that sort of thing is stored in an external file.

Really... if all you're looking to do is create maps for an existing engine... then RPG Maker really sounds like what you want.

RPG maker is good and all...but...

I just want to get a freeware engine so I can use it to base mine. Then I can make a game COMPLETELY from scratch.

But I do like RPG maker...very useful!

Okay.. so you're just looking for something which you can kind of use as a reference to build your own engine?

That makes a lot more sense. =)

Unfortunately I don't even know of any decent freeware RPGs -- let alone any that are open source.

Making a simple engine isn't too hard if you know the basics. Tip: Use SDL.

Yeah, decent free RPG's are very hard to come by...cant recall any either.

I dont know an RPG engine, but you could use Allegro, not an RPG engine( http://www.allegro.cc is a good site for it) but it is a game library, and the site has some games, some are open source, so you could try getting started with one of them.

Yeah, I haven't gotten Allegro yet. That may work, but I was hoping for a straightforward RPG engine...ah well...

Um, a good free RPG is Ahriman's Prophecy made by Amaranth Productions. www.amaranthia.com
