This is what inspired me to make this thread. Note the signature in the post (or profile).
As you can see, this user has re-registered (2nd time in fact) because he forgot his password. I noticed that the FAQ doesn't include anything on what to do when you forget your password, or even a link in the login page in case you forget your password, in which many other forums do. Sure you can just IM the admins, but what if the user who forgot his/her password doesn't want to IM and prefers email? Since guests cannot see the email of users, they have no choice but to IM, even if they prefer email. So I think that you should either mention anything about forgetting your password in the FAQ, put a "I forgot my password" link in the login page (I like this way the best), or let guests see the emails of admins, or 2-all of them. So I would like in the FAQ or login page to have something about forgetting your password. What do you think?

EDIT: Admin or mod, please change the tile to "Forgetting Your Password". Thanks.

I bet it wouldn't be especially difficult to have a link that changes your password and emails it to you, like other boards have.

When I first registered, I logged out by accident and I forgot my password. Luckily, my brother remembered my password, since I said my password out loud. If he hadn't, I would've got an AIM screenname and talk to one of the admins. And now that user had to re-reg AGAIN. Poor guy... Honestly, I don't think it would be hard to put a "I forgot my password" link in the login page. When I forgot my password, I panicked becaused I didn't know what to do since there's no "I forgot my password" link and/or any mention of forgetting it in the FAQ.

I think emails are just an easy way to flame members, to be honest. There are other ways to contact an admin, like AIM or MSN, or asking someone else to do it for you from the board.
HH's idea is good, but I don't know how much work that requires.

You can probably get flamed similarly with AIM or MSN, too. But I think just putting a "I forgot my password" link in the login page would be enough for in case you forgot your password. I would like to hear SMW_Freak's opinion on this, since he keeps forgetting his password and has to reregister because of that.

$newpw = rand();
mysql_query("UPDATE users SET password = \'$newpw\' WHERE id = \'$userid\'");
$email = mysql_query("SELECT email FROM users WHERE id = \'$userid\'");
mail($email,"Your new password","Your password has been reset to:\n$newpw");
unset($newpw); //Just to be safe

That probably wouldn't work but you'd use something along those lines. Though it'd be better to write a random password generator than just using rand() (harder to crack).

But if someone's forgetting their password that much, they should consider writing it down.
