| Anyone have any? When I'm not listening to Power Metal, I'm usually listening to some good ol' rock n' roll. Some bands I really enjoy from this era: Def Leppard Scorpions Tesla Queensryche Faith No More Quiet Riot!! And there's plenty of others, and there are big jumps in there with styles, but I'm sure you guys get the point. What bands would you guys suggest I / others should check out? |

Late '80s to early '90s? Pffft, it's all about the late '70s/early-mid '80s. The Cure, Joy Division, The Birthday Party, The The, Bauhaus...  I don't know what you mean by "rock," but uh...try out Nine Inch Nails' pre-The Fragile stuff, if you're not too familiar with them. Specifically the Broken EP, since it fits that time frame the best, and it's totally rockin'. Bitchin' guitars, staticy keyboards...lots of angst and energy. Other than that...I guess I really don't know what to suggest. :o I don't listen to much straight-up rock from that period. |

The circumstances surrounding the album are kind of similar in an odd way (look up what happened with MSP in that time period) but it's better, if you ask me. Less abrasive musically, but MUCH, MUCH more pointed and powerful lyrically. It's accessible, in a weird way (try "Faster") but the songs are incredibly misanthropic and all about some of the less savory and more shameful aspects of society. For instance, there's some anorexia, prostitution (in the name of capitalism? YOU decide!) and two songs about concentration camps, one almost onomopoetically called "The Intense Humming of Evil" which, musically, can go toe-to-toe with "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter"... and kick the shit out of it. Only hitch is that if you want to get it legally, you either have to import it or get the 10th Anniversary Giant Ass-Fuck Edition, with two discs and a DVD, which has a bunch of videos and a revealing half-hour interview session with the surviving members of the band (I TOLD you it was similar!). Demos and live tracks abound, and the second disc is the unreleased US mix of the album. Best $20 I spent, but it might run ya more if you buy it new. |

| I'd have to agree here... "The Holy Bible" is easily one of the most important albums of the era, yet often forgotten in the light of In Utero. On iTunes, get "Faster" "ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" and "Yes". If you like The Holy Bible, try to get "Generation Terrorists". The UK version is a full-on double album (stunning for a debut effort), containing 18 songs. It's not as accomplished as The Holy Bible, but the excelent album that the Manics crashed-landed onto the music scene in the early 90s. Download "Motorcycle Emptiness", "You Love Us" and "Slash and Burn". |

(1989) <- Well this isn't pure rock, but it's still pure awesome  The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989) <- Totally one of the best albums ever made. Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills & Bellyaches (1989) <- The only bad thing about this album is that it doesn't have "24 Hour Party People" on it. So download that. Nirvana - Bleach, Nevermind, In Utero (1989, 1991, 1993) <- Durrrrrrr. Primal Scream - Screamadelica (1991) <- You've already listened to this right. Oh god I bet you haven't.  (btw not really rock but whatever >( )Stone Temple Pilots - Core, Purple (1992, 1994) <- I'm not a really big STP fan. But they're definitely rock and definitely early 90's ;o Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (1993) <- mmmyes. Radiohead - Pablo Honey (1993) <- I actually like this album more then some of their later stuff. Beastie Boys - Ill Communication (1994) <- Well again not rock. But Sabotage is one of the awesomest tracks ever. Beck - Mellow Gold (1994) <- Can you say "awesome debut album"? Oh yes you can. Frank Black - Teenager Of The Year (1994) <- ex-pixies Frank Black is awesome. Weezer - Weezer (Blue) (1994) <- Another great debut album. Oasis - Definitely Maybe (1994) <-  Maybe 1994 isn't "early 90's" anymore. But whatever. Those are the ones you should really definitely look into. There are loads more of course. | Late 80s is all about Madchester! The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Inspiral Carpets are three must-haves (especially The Stone Roses. Did you guys know that they're allegedly doing a comeback?). Then you get the 90s, and the wee beginnings of the what would become Britpop. Paul Weller, Suede, Pulp, Blur, culminating in the release of Definitely Maybe by Oasis in 1994. As for cross the pond, you've got some great noise bands, such as Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies, but this period will be remembered mostly for grunge. Pearl Jam, NIrvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. etc. |

| I probably should have stated I'm not much of a grunge (or is it grudge?) fan ... ie. Nirvana. I'm more for "rock, sex, parties," and all that good stuff.
