Yeah, Danielle has a point. I doubt if it will completely sink and become the next Atlantis. It'll just flood for a while and wreck some houses. New Orleans will rebuild.

I've now heard they're sending a large number of people who can't leave the city to.. the Superdome? I don't understand why.
They don't know that it will be strong enough to withstand what I've heard on TV as "The strongest Hurricane to hit the United States." What if the roof collapses, or water is able to get in? Sounds pretty dangerous to me.. but hopefully the people inside stay safe.

The governer was smart. In his State of Emergency letter, he said that the government can and will commandeer anything necessary to get people evacuated.

This is where the government and other states need to pitch in. They need to send everything they can to get everyone out of the city. Cars, trucks, boats, trains, whatever it takes to get those people out.

I guess the good news is that this is the hurricane that they've always known would come, and have been preparing for.

I went to bed last night, and it was a Cat 3. When I got up about 30 mins. ago, it was a 5. It seems that it's trying to invent a Cat 6...

All we can do is hope, and those who believe in it, pray.

Oh, you can bet all be praying for all those people.

It's funny. I hardly hear anything about it where I am until it turns huge like this. Scary.

I'm just hoping that my cousin that's in a Florida prison is safe and out of harms way. Also my folks in Texarkana are going to be safe too.

As long as he's not in the Florida panhandle, he'll be fine. All 99% of Florida will get is wind and rain. We'll probably get some thunderstorms here too.

It's Category 5 now.

The Saints have gone to California early (They have a game Thursday against the Raiders), and the Louisiana Superdome is being used as a shelter.

Now? Re-read my first post. It was a Cat 5 when I woke up today around 1:00-1:30pm EST, probably earlier.

And now it's only hours from landfall.

They're saying it could go offcourse to the east.. and it would be much better hitting Mississippi, where it's less damage because there's not a city like New Orleans sitting there below sea level. Even now, when it's so close to land, they're saying not to doubt that it could easily go off the predicted track.
I'm assuming that would be a good thing?

Frankly, it doesn't matter where Katrina makes landfall. Being a Cat 5 (or possibly a Cat 4), it's gonna cause catastrophic destruction.

Well, it's going to hurt but we're talking about the one place in the States where they NEVER wanted a Cat 4/5 to hit...

This isn't gonna be good. Hopefully it makes a last-second turn (to minimize the effects) or weakens at the last second, but that's not likely.

After hearing about it on the news, all I could think was "Bye bye, New Orleans".

Good luck to them, though, they'll definitely need it

I mean, shit... all of these factors (elevation (or lack thereof), sheer power, etc) are really going to fuck that place up :/

Yeah, hopefully it does something to lessen the effects as what's been already said. Before I didn't really pay attention to hurricanes..Does New Orleans even get a lot of hurricanes? Im guessing a few but not like this..

This is the equivalent of the "Big One" if we're comparing hurricanes to earthquakes.

Bella: They might have gotten a couple of tropical storms/low-level hurricanes but nothing as potentially catastrophic as this.

They haven't gotten a bad hurricane before. Certainly not this strong. And this storm is being called "The worst hurricane to ever hit the United States"... so um, New Orleans doesn't know what's about to hit it.

Ooh, I see . They get minor ones..and don't even know what to expect. Hopefully everything will be okay for them..I thought that being in the South kind of near Florida that they would be getting them but I guess they just get the leftovers of hurricanes.

Yeah, they're getting the heart of this one. 150 mph winds is a major difference from the tropical storm winds that they get from other hurricanes down there. Plus that city is so old.. I don't know how it's going to withstand this.

Plus look how BIG the eye of the storm is in the satellite images that you see 600 times an hour on CNN. That's a pretty good indication of how big this puppy is.

Winds are now up to 160 MPH. And New Orleans has been preparing for a bad hurricane for a looong time. Nobody every expected one like this, though.

If it's still a Cat 5 when it hits, it will be the 4th Cat 5 EVER to make landfall in the US.

I didn't know the scope of the storm until today. And then I found out, and now I just feel numb. How else am I to react to helplessly awaiting an inevitable disaster? I'm far out of the path of the hurricane, but still...just knowing the worst that can happen to all those people...I don't think I'll be able to sleep well tonight.

Not only that, one of Rando's aunts lives in New Orleans and we have no idea where she is.
