Hi, I am creating a remake of good old donkey kong country from the super nes. I have managed to extract all of the images I will be needing but sounds are proving very difficult. Using a program called Snessor I managed to get 3 good sounds, how should I go about getting the rest? Thankyou -BigMoosie |

Um...snessor isn't going to cut it. First off, it's a horrible program. By default it rips everything at 8000 mhz, and misses almost everything. And all it does is rip instrument samples. 99% of DKC's sound effects aren't direct samples, they are actualy sequenced to do things in the sound code. For instance, the bee buzzing uses a low droneing sound that is told to pitch bend up and down, the bouncing tire is actualy the acoustic bass sample being altered in pitch as well. Snessor is not going to be able to get these for you. You'll need to rip them physically from the rom using an emulator and a sound utility. Good luck.

Originally posted by Keitaro It doesn't "miss" samples (except in Gradius 3 and Castlevania 4, the only games I know that compress samples beyond the basic bit-rate-reduction.) It does often give random "scratches" by reading other data as extra samples, and is a pain for games like Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean that literally have 2000+ very short samples that the "flexible voice driver" swaps on the fly. You can change its sampling rate, as well. The DOS version of SNESSOR for reinserting samples sucks because it doesn't seem to be compatible with any shell, and the Windows version doesn't have a reinsert feature at all. I know the Temporal Flux hacking allowed for reinsertion of samples in Chrono Trigger and converted .wav files to bit-rate-reduced, but you'd then have to copy and paste them to the DKC rom. So far the only sound hacking I've experimented with is copying & pasting sounds with a hex editor and keeping the lengths the same. Every game does use mostly sequencing, but you can edit instruments and the Kong voices easier than almost any other game. |

Thankyou for your advice. What would be a good sound utility program to extract the sounds? I was wondering, since the music is always playing in the background, would it be possible to extract the same sound effect a few times and then somehow discard the background noise with some particular software? I have written programs to do a similar task with images, compare and discard and disrepencies, but is this possible with sounds? |

In ZSNES you can disable sound channels with the keys F5..F12, dunno about SNES9x. A quick test showed that channel 6 (F10) is used for both sound effects and part of the music. The sound effects stop the music, so ripping should be easy. Try VAC for ripping; I think you'll need a recorder as well (Cool Edit, Goldwave etc). (edited by creaothceann on 08-25-05 04:34 AM) |

Thanks creaothceann, though, when I ran the VAC Audio Repeater and tried to record through Sound Forge, instead of getting the donkey kong sounds I got some womans voice saying: ....trial.... .....tial..... ....trial..... Did I download the wrong version or did I do something else wrong? |

I've never needed something like VAC, I just set my recording source to "sum", then recording sound output just works.
