After over a year of work on this, my Yoshi's Island hack is finally done. This has by far been my most enjoyable hacking project ever, more enjoyable than all my SMW hacks combined. I think it has really developed me as a ROM hacker and I certainly have learned a lot from hacking this game using an extremely tricky, non user-friendly, limited editor known as EggVine (no offense Squash, it still rocks though ).

Here are my main thank you's for this...
#1: Squash Monster: Thanks for making EggVine. Even though it isn't really developed at all, I was still able to use it to make a complete YI hack. Also, thanks for all your support, interest in my project, and hours of help .
#2: Sonicandtails: Thanks for all your interest in all of my projects, I mean all of my projects, no matter how much they suck .
#3: Dcahrakos: Thank you for your initial interest in making a YI editor. Even if that was a total lie, it did spark Squash Monster to make an editor for real. So, if it weren't for you, this thread wouldn't exist (at least not today).

Alright, now onto the actual hack. Here are the most recent screens of SMW2+:

5-1: Swamped

5-7: Jungle Parting Festivities

6-8: King Bowser's Castle

Some more screens can be found here...
http://www.freewebs.com/goldenyoshi/screensofsmw2.htm

Alright...now before you download there's some things you need to know...

The ips included in the zip file must be patched to this version of the ROM...
Yoshi's Island v1.0 (U)

I repeat...
Yoshi's Island v1.0 (U)

Other versions will not work! I seriously do not want to hear one more person say "When the first level loads it freezes at the level name screen." Okay, first of all, if the game froze at the level name screen all the time, don't you think I, the creator of the hack, who's spent over a year with it, tested it in my emulator 20,000,000 times, would notice it froze at the level name screen? Thus my point being, you must be doing something wrong, not me.

Now, keep in mind this is the first complete YI hack, and I used an overly underdeveloped editor to use this, plus I'm no extreme ASM genius like FuSoYa or BMF, or some top-notch ROM hacker like DarkDaihz (I don't even know the guy or really what he does, I just know everything he does, says, or releases causes all people to fall out of their chairs). I just did the best to my abilities with the limitations at hand, using as many resources in my power. Thus, this hack isn't as "advanced" as some may call it. Thus, I have created what I call the "Complaint Wall", of some anticipated complaints I had prior to the release, and my automatic answers to these complaints. In other words, I don't want to hear you complain about it, if I do I will humiliate you by pointing you to the Complaint Wall .

Complaint Wall
Complaint: "There aren't any new graphics in this hack! All hacks nowadays have new graphics, what's wrong with you?"
Answer: "Alright, first of all, EggVine has no sign of any graphics editing. Second of all, I don't enjoy making new graphics because I suck at it, level designing is my thing. Third of all, this is the first complete YI hack, can we please just start off with some new revamped levels instead of awesome new graphics and ASM enhancements right away?"
Complaint: "You didn't have any custom palettes in your hack. It's always nice to at least have custom palettes to make your levels look new."
Answer: "No custom palette support in EggVine, and no other way for me personally do it, so deal with the palettes Nintendo provided for this game, 'kay?"
Complaint: "The overworld doesn't have new level icons or scenery at the bottom. They don't match the levels themselves."
Answer: "See complaint #1, read a few times to get the jist."
Complaint: "There isn't a new storyline! You suck!"
Answer: "Okay, not only is there no support for text editing in EggVine, but I had to learn hex editing for the first time while hacking YI (and believe me, that was a huge step for me) in order to learn message box text and level name editing. That is quite a troublesome process at times, even one line can be tricky since you have to stay within the borders and make sure text is aligned at different lines. Thus, it would've taken me a very long time to develop a storyline using lines and lines of text making sure I aligned it right and whatnot, and that would've taken away so much time at my level designing."
Complaint: "The chomp sharks in the background in 1-6 float in air. They're supposed to be on something you moron! How can they just stay in mid-air?"
Answer: "Er...I suppose you're right. Ah well, excuse me for a few hours, I'm going to go chill with my wizard friend Kamek. Damn that dude amazes me, he can make all sorts of creatures multiply in size a hundred fold in a matter of seconds and turn inanimate objects into living things in the snap of a finger. Then, I think we'll have something to eat and I'll pop a green spotted egg out of my ass. Oh wait! Nothing is realistic here is it, and you want to hound me for a technicality?"

Moving along now, this doesn't mean I don't want any constructive input, just nothing listed above because I feel there was nothing I could do about those cases. Remember to read the "Known Bugs" section of the readme before posting any bug reports.

Also included in the readme are all my thank-you's that weren't included in this thread. If you aren't in the thank-you's, well, then you had nothing to do with the progress of SMW2+, so go cry in the corner .

I won't keep you waiting any longer. I'm very honored and happy to have the first finished Yoshi's Island hack. Please let me know what you think!

What he fails to mention is that he's awesome at what he does and YI is the bestest game for level hacks ever.

And nobody gets to complain about no graphics hacking until the Super Mario World community stops using rips from this game for everything.

And EggVine is awesome. And I'm not biased at all.

And you will all play this hack under threat of swarms of badgers. That is all.

Yes sir, mister high and mighty! Seriously, that's not exactly a friendly attitude...

Your "complaint wall" isn't easily readable with all of that garble mixed in. =\

6. 4-1 is named "Welcome To Paradice". I know I misspelled Paradise, there's a reason, I'll let you figure this one out .
If stuff is renamed, I always assume there's a blatent reason why. That's just me though. So it's also just me that you didn't have to point that particular point out. *nag nag nag nag nag nag nag*

I'll test it out, and fill in my review of it, either by editing this post if I'm still the last one, or a new reply.

Now really, why would you even want to edit YI's graphics? Add, maybe, but edit? They rock! And the game has like 64 palettes you can use already, that's one per level and 8 more for whatever. You don't need custom palettes (unless you do edit the graphics ).

OK, review time.... Let the chaos ensue:
  • The challenge factor is definately there. Stick with that. I'm on 1-8 and have had two game overs already.
  • Some stuff is too easy to find, other stuff is too hard to find (or too hard to get). Pretty drastic on the first world (I'm still on 1-8 btw). I have gotten 100% on two levels, and have barely broken 80 on a couple others. It's usually flowers that nab me too.
  • Transitions in levels between screens is pretty much "meh." I don't particularilly care about the going from normal, to jungle, to snow (and skiing while at it) back to jungle all in the same level. Gotta work on that.
  • I think there are enough cloud's with stars in them. And considering how easily you can get Star +20's in the game, this may be a waste. No cheating of any kind, just using what the game already has. (It should be fairly obvious what I'm referring to )

Not bad at all for starters. I'm quite impressed with what you did pull off, even if some elements need work. Good job, and I look forward to completing this playthrough in the next day or two.

*Points Bio to the Complaint Wall.* I specifically said I didn't want any complaints about the level icons.

And I didn't quite understand your comment on what happened in 2-4 with the crab.

Lenophis...Just give me a break with World 1. That was when I was starting out and my difficulty level was all over the place. And I know level transitions are weird, that's because I wanted to jam-pack a little variety into my early levels for the World 1 demo. Plus, did you not see that 1-5 is called "Land Of Wacky Climates".

And when I said "You must be doing something wrong", I didn't mean with everything, just patching it to the wrong ROM. I mean, if the level screens don't freeze for me, but it does for others, wouldn't it be a safe assumption that someone might have patched it wrong or something else?

Any positive thoughts yet from anyone?

Ok, only really cheap bastards use the overworld screen trick

Hmmm, you never knew hex editing before this game? You would have fooled me if you had said otherwise, considering what your other hacks were like. Man, Lunar can really do all that?!? Geez.

I just started playing. You're cool, GY. In other words, this hack is gonna be hella fun.

Wow what an unsuspected reaction from the people, eh GoYo?

But what Im really concerned about, is why didn't you tell me when you were releaseing it >8( I was almost done with the beta testing too >8(

I really started playing this hack not knowing too much about YI at all, as it was YEARS ago I had played it. Of course, GoYo was there to help me sometimes...Well...Alot. But thats besides the point. This hack is definatly great, no matter how much of a frigging hard time I had with things present in the original game(Go fark yourself you damn, spinning logs!!!) and whats even better, is that if Nintendo was handed this instead of regular YI, Im-a thinking they would take it. This game is definatly console worthy.

Now the biggest question of all is...

What next GoYo?

(Remembers that he told GoYo something to add to the readme and goes to check if he did )Grrrrrr Damn you!! lol)
By the way, GoYo, add your hack to the Commons section of the board...
