http://www.cymoro.com/rha/zelda3c --The new home of Zelda3C

GameMakr24 has updated his main page and has added a new Diary entry, after a long period of no communication with the internet community. He has still been working on Zelda 3 Challenge: Quest for Calatia, but he just hasn't had a site to post new updates since Challenge Games went down. No new screenshots yet, but I'm sure a few will be coming soon.

Damn It!!
In all cruelty I too was making a z3 challenge hack. Nothing special, just a little more difficult. But yours looks a lot nicer.
I'll still finish mine and give it a different name.
Do you have an idea on a relese date?

Just to clarify, GameMakr24 is the one who has been making this hack for the last 3 or 4 years. I'm not making this hack, as the majority of people here know. I'm just trying to get word out of the new site, because GM24 doesn't really much time to hack, much less to spend that time doing something else on the internet.

I can say that it'll still be a while until this monster of a hack is completed, but it'll be well worth the wait.

Wanted to add that it's not just SePH that hasn't released a true completed Zelda 3 hack. Nobody has yet, despite many people putting forth 'tentative' release dates. Even if GM's hack takes two more years (which I doubt) and every other Zelda 3 hack in the works has already been released (also doubtful) when his is completed, Zelda3C will still be well worth the wait. An extreme amount of intricate planning has already been put into this title, over a long period of time as you know. The result of all this planning will be very visible when you see the finished product.

This game just takes forever to complete.. You work 3 years on it and haven't made 1/3 of the game. That is relatively long. Even when you're done with the overworlds and dungeons theres so much more to do. Hacking this game is insanely long. That's probably the best reason why no one released anything yet.

And MON, just between you and me, don't be an asshole, you know that group hacks are kinda necessary for this game. Right

Otherwise for one guy to take on everything is just too much. That's why DP is going to be released first. A team of 5+ people working on it. Omega, DM, Bit-Blade and two guys which I'll call Mr.X and Mr.Y which want to remain anonymous from the people.

10 years later were going to see all those one people hacks. Meaning in other words, better set up yourself a team before hacking this game, otherwqise you'll have a long hobby.

Thing is it also takes a massive amount of commitment which cant always be sustained. People have their own lives and what this is is a hobby which means we dont get paid for it. Miyamoto and the Ninty boys were able to keep their interest in it for the duration of Zelda3 production cause they were getting paid for it. And also cause Miyamoro probably lives for the zelda franchse lol.

The good thing about GM24 is that weve all seen his ability to commit to a hack before. ZeldaC was a great hack which i can still see despite my complete lack of interest in all things NES Zelda. Gamemakr24 was the reason i stumbled onto the hacking community so its good to be able to read his updates again. Still the waits gonna be a while but itll be worth it. 10 years or not.

Yes, I agree that GameMakr24's task has been years longer because he has primarily worked alone on this project; but just to point this out, even GameMakr isn't trying to do *everything* by himself. He has enlisted others to do the music, and to do some of the ASM hacking. At one point (a long time ago) he even tried to have a graphic editing contest, in which anyone could submit graphics to be put into the game, but at the time it wasn't very productive.

There are, of course, difficulties when trying to work in groups as well, (especially across the internet.) Most problems could probably be avoided if there is a very clear plan, there is a clear leader, and everyone knows where they stand, but there is always the problems of miscommunication and a lack of communication. The fact that Dark Prophecy has come along so well is testimony to how well they have overcome these obsticles as a group.

C'mon SePH, you know I was just messing. Everybody knows this is a hard game to hack. The longer it takes, usually the more things you learn how to modify and get better at planning the layout of the game.

A little update is better than no update I always say, I'm really glad that project is still goin on. I have faith that this hack will be complete when it's ready. And I know for sure it'll be worth the wait.

This is gonna be an awsome hack, I can already see when this hack is done people will talk about how long it took and how GM24 still managed to work on Z3C despite what he went through.

I could tell instantly that MoN was just kidding around. Not a big deal. Oh, and for the record, Bit-Bladed has dropped out, and so has Mr. Y (our sound guy). Its always been the core group of Me, Dudeman, and Mr. X... lol, Mr X.....

Oh, and for the person who asked how DP was, its going very well... we just had a major breakthrough in dungeon editing. Many thanks to Mr. X

MoN kidding around? I have no doubt about it... now..

Bit-Blade dropped out? Are you kidding?

Mr.X, Y, Z... can't remember who each was.. been a while...

GameMakr24. Those new screens are really nice. I was beeing sarcastic saying another ten years, since I know myself it takes so much time to hack this game and you seem to be only working on it partial time.

Seeing those castle shots makes me itch to make them look better. They get the job done, and they are very well constructed (excellent line art/ideas) but it looks like something just short of final fantasy 4. Give me those tiles and I promise you (eventually) that I can make them shine with all my evil graphical might. For the moment I have quite a lot on my plate.

As for 'dropping out' I suppose I better explain myself. I decided to sever all online responsibilities. My life is lived almost entirely on my computer, and creating obligations and reasons to continue this way isn't helping. I haven't been very succesful yet... Anyway, if that's how Omega and Dudeman want to say it, I won't debate them.

Yeah, I realize the castle's graphics are visually simplistic. Comparing them to FF4 is actually a compliment! But it's not that I'm an amateur artist, it's that my color options are limited. Had I drawn things with less diagonal lines, I could've mapped the edges of things to individual tiles, instead of spreading my 7 colors out so thin. Here are the two palettes I'm using on the castle. (The third palette is reserved, unfortunately.)

lines Black
walls Med Grey
walls Dark Grey
banners, cones Blue
banners, roses Yellow
rose lines Dark Yellow
thorns Dark Green

lines Black
walls Med Grey
walls Dark Grey
stained glass Light Blue
stained glass Red
doors Brown
doors Dark Brown

Here's a sample of the screen shots I posted, for viewers' references:

Because of the shapes of things like cones and banners, the wall colors must appear in both palettes. The browns in things like wooden gates and doors can only appear when there's no blue or yellow around, and vice-versa.

If you think you can improve the castle's appearance in spite of palette limitations, you're welcome to do so. And no hurry, either -- I know what it's like to be strapped for time.

I actually kind of like those graphics. except for the brightness of the blue. But I hate how LTTP's palletes are handled, 7 colors a tile as opposed to 15/16. I could've done so much more with that game if I could've used more colors =|. Oh, and trust Bit-Blade, I've seen his work and he's quite kickass. [psh, what a stoner]

Well, GameMakr, you COULD cheat. The trick would be to use several different palettes at once (two would work just fine). They would each share some colors so when they bordered eachother the blending would look natural. One palette could be for with the grays for the castle. You could make due with 3 shades of gray. Four would be ideal, but that might be pushing it (I think part of the problem is that you're spreading your palette out WAY too thin). Your other palette would have the natural colors as well as a few more shades of blue and yellow, and green... Actually, with the way you have your palette set up you'd be much better off with 3 different palettes.

Anyway, I'll get back to you on this.
