The entire command and conquer series is pretty good.

So is Warcraft series.

I have to say my favorite is Age Of Empires II because in Operating Systems we would have LAN games every for a whole semester. Nothing better than LAN partys with friends.

I haven't played too many games of this style, at least that I can remember I know I've played all the games in the Age of Empires series, the Star Wars versions of it (I can't remember the name right now), and Command and Conquer: Red Alert. Out of all of those, Age of Empires is my favorite I'm only going to elaborate on why the Age of Empires series is my favorite though, mainly because I can't remember a whole lot about the other games

The overall time setting of the game appeals to me more than the other ones do. I don't really know how to explain it, other than to say there's something to be said for planting a couple trebuchets and watching them attack a castle, or sending a group of monks into the enemy camp and having them convert as many enemy units as possible Having the other games based in the future / more oriented around technologically-advanced times didn't really appeal to me

Also, if one scenario has frustrated you to no end, there's nothing more satisfying than sending an army of cars, monkeys of death, or dragons to attack the enemy I realize the Star Wars version of the game has special units only accessible by using cheats or the map editor. I'm not sure about Command and Conquer, but as far as I can remember, last time I checked the cheats on that game, there was nothing about codes for secret units.

The map editor is a nice touch as well. As long as you can get the hang of how triggers work, you could, given you had the time to do so, make your whole base appear when you moved a unit to a certain area. I still remember a map I was working on, where I based it off a book. It never really got anywhere, but it was still fun to do.

Overall though, Age of Empires is my favorite. More specifically The Kings / The Conquerors

All Command & Conquer here. Gives me a lot of tactical freedom as opposed to Blizzard's games. The latter parts of the franchise are also very customizable and mod-friendly, there's heaps of mods and even total conversions available and coming up. The awesome music and funny FMV cutscenes are a nice bonus as well. There are no codes or cheats for any C&C but in Red Alert there's a secret B-movie campaign with giant ants, and in C&C1 there's another campaign with dinosaurs.

Other than that, I've spent a lot of time with the Dune games and Rise of Nations (Superb RTS blend of Age of Empires and Civilization).

Hmm those monks wont last long Karadur, waste of gold if you ask me

I too have to say Age of Empires II setting is awesome, its fun having 4 on 4 games with very experienced players. We had one game that lasted two almost two weeks, and each class period was an hour and half.

Still got a 100 percent in it though(we'd just get the classwork from the teachers computer over the network).

Best strategy ever is sneaking up on someone in the black forest maps. You can knock down tree's with onagers and then send up villagers to build castles on they're land. Never lost with that strategy.

Starcraft.

Why? It was the game that got me interested in RTS games in the first place. Also, it is fun LAN.

Nothing is better than sending in a Dark Archon on my friends, mind controlling their SCV and Drone, taking it back in my base, and killing them with all three races. They suck at defence, and they suck at attacking a defence.

Total Annilhlation.

Because I'm proud to be one of the 5 people who played it.
Soundtracks by Jeremy Soule freaking rock.
The game had tons of great units, buildings, and everything.

I agree it was a kickass game. It was actually the first RTS I ever played, so I guess that makes me partial.

Arent pretty much all RTS games war-based in one form or the other?

Sure some have other features but they all pretty much revolve around war.

Nice "Fastest Possible Map Ever v8.0" you've got there, William. Your friends must really suck if they let you MC their Drones and SCVs.

Real men play non-money maps. And Terran.

As for me, I'm a fan of the holy trinity: WCIII, RA2, Starcraft. The finest examples of RTS games in their respective categories (medieval warfare, space warfare, and just plain fucked up) to date, and enough customization available to satisfy nearly anyone. Also noteworthy is Generals. I'm not really an AOanything fan.

Ooh, don't know if this counts, but Simcity 3000 is badass too. Oldie, but a goodie.

I hate those damned money maps, they more or less take away all the actual strategic elements from the game and just turn it into a terrible Zerg-rush fest. I never liked battle.net which is pretty much riddled with idiots like that.

My Starcraft disc just burned out.

I've been playing C&C RA2 YR again. Which is fun.

I am going to FINALLY get WC3:FT

TA is great fun. TA Kingdoms is better.

RoN is the greatest game ever! Between Russia, Inca and the Dutch...I'm untouchable. Huzzah for defensive economic tactics! Especially Russia. I just take the Wonders that would prohibit me from kicking ass. The Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and Kremlin are my bitches. Oh, the Collosseum is the best beginning Wonder a man could want with them. Just build a dozen Cossacks and a small contingent of heavy infantry and attack anything that comes into your territory. Destroy their supply wagon and they're done. Plus, fully garrisoned forts set up at artificially constructed choke points is the win. Two forts built during the Medieval age placed on border push and flanked with two defensive towers is wow. Plus the obligatory town defences. When you hit the industrial age, all of a sudden Russia is unfair. Despotism, Democracy, Socialism. Best thing to do for Russia. Perfect for crippling your enemy to get the tech advantage and then defending yourself and building up during the middle ages and then bam. Fux0ring during the Modern and Information Age. Plus, you get the T tanks and the Shock Infantry. Unnatural!

America is pretty fun too, but only because you infantry whore in the beginning. They're pretty much useless against the Aztec though or the Turks.

The Dutch are fun because you just build a small defensive fleet on a sea map to defend your holdings and just resource whore and expand like a bitch. Your economy, once kickstarted artificially via trade, is too good to be defeated. You age jump pretty quick and then by the time you're at the Gunpowder or Age of Enlightenment you have a superior navy by far and can utfuck your opponents.
