hello, i've already tried reading and searching thru this forum with google, but didn't have much luck. i was wondering if there's a way to insert midi/nsf files into a NES rom, like Zelda for example? is there such a program that lets you import/extract music files from NES roms? thanks.

No. Every game uses its own sound engine. Any music in a rom would have to custom-coded for that particular rom's sound engine.

Actually, IIRC, certain games (very few though) do infact follow the same engine. Such as Megaman 3 and 4.

Thats true. I just wanted to make my answer as general and simple as possible.

See the thread a few posts down about inserting other music into SMB1 (quite a feat since the ROM also had to be expanded and re-mapped.)

I ought to see if I can insert VRC6/7 music into other ROMs sometime.

You'd have to change the mapper to VRC6 or VRC7 but yeah it can be done if you know what you're doing.

Metroid: NES music is not really interchangable. If you read bbit's thread a few threads below this, you can see all the work he put into that hack. There's no tool to automate the process -- and it's fairly complex.

Yeah. A long time ago, Disch showed a ogg with a spiffied Final Fantasy's town music. That was kinda cool.

thanks guys for the replies! how did i miss that post about the smb music engine! now after reading that post, i think changing Zelda 1's music will be a difficult task. i just wish there was a Zelda editor that could let me insert FF music! but anyways, i was curious because i remember seeing rom hacks with "remix" in the name, and wondered how they changed the music and how hard it was.
