A new day dawns, the earliest light filtering down to the forest floor and onto the brightly colored autumn leaves. The song of birds begins slowly, then builds to fill the air with glorious melody. The sound of black leather boots scrunching dry leaves can be heard as a man walks through the woods. He wears a dark cloak, concealing his face and contrasting sharply with the surrounding sunshine. He stops, turning to face a single tree, thicker and taller than all the rest. Walking up to it, he reaches out a bandage-bound hand and runs his fingers along its bark, unable to feel it through layers of indigo-dyed linen. A motion catches his eye, and he turns in such a way as to deliberately uncover from beneath his cloak the hilt of a sword extending above his right shoulder. He calmly speaks to the figure he knows is just beyond the next few trees in a voice that seems to be crafted from pain and age-weary endurance:

Who has come to this sacred place? Bring yourself forward, I wish no harm upon you. All should visit this place, if only once.

Jaques came forward, walking cautiously in his full adamantium armour, which concealed his dragon skin.

"I did not expect for anyone to find this place. I came only once before, a very long time ago. But tell me, why do you have your sword shown so deliberatly? Very few that come here, should come to kill."

As Jaques comes forward, the stranger's eyes seem to burst into flame, illuminating a face with a deceptively young appearance with a flickering orange light. He smiles, showing rows of amethyst teeth, then speaks.

Then you know. Here, beneath this tree, lies my sister's grave. She died, so that the forest and its creatures could live. It is a grand tradition, that every year another life is given to the trees. Here, many heroes have decided upon their last acts. Ths forest grows on the blood and souls of thousands. This, you already know.

But in recent years, this forest has come under attack. A false religion seeks to burn these sacred trees, for they stand for truth and justice, and these things are hateful to them. I have watched over these trees for too many years to see them fallen in my old age. Now I must carry my weapon alongside me, for as long as I live, they know they cannot destroy this place. I am marked for death, and already I have defeated three of their assassins.

And you? Why have you come, in these harsh times? Dragons have forsaken this place, yet I can sense their blood in you. Surely you are not foolish enough to see this forest as a place to conquer? A trophy, to show the world that you dragons have the power to defeat even the dead?

ooc: Hmm... both our characters seem in complete agreement...
we need to find a way to fight.

ic: "I do not conquer. I killed a dragon, and that gave me their skin. I defend, and I attack those who attempt to harm me."

Jaques pulled out his sword. A strong one of adamantium, that supassed most in strength, and sharpness. "Perhaps it may be good for us to have a duel. No spells that could kill another, and no fatal strikes. Would you agree?"

A duel? Perhaps I must also learn the strength of my allies... I accept. However, were you to harm the forest, I would have a true reason to fight... Shall we begin?

With a quick move of his left arm, the stranger sends his black cloak flying into the wind high above the treetops. This reveals his leather armor in all its black and indigo star-patterned glory, as well as his short black hair. He snaps his bandaged fingers, and the sheath to his blade disappears as he pulls it out from behind him. It is a longsword, of no special material, though it is covered in minute runes and seems to be far more lustrous (read: shiny) than even the most polished steel. He holds it out in front of him, and seems to tense as if to attack, then pauses.

The thought occurs, that if we were to properly duel, we ought to know each other's names. I am known by many names, but as you see me now, I am called Ashra. And you?

A careful observer may have noticed Ashra's cloak transform into a flock of ravens off in the distance, which then began flying in odd patterns, but all staying within sight range of the large tree by which Ashra stands.

"I am called Jaques." He replied. "It is a pleasure to fight you Ashra."

Jaques placed his sword in front of him, holding it pointing up, with the sharp facing at him. He then gave a ceremonial bow, and went to action.

He charged at Ashra, and quickly jumped over, attempting to stab at Ashra's back.

Ashra sees the attack coming, and rolls forward as Jaques lands, narrowly avoiding his opponent's weapon. He jumps up from his roll, turning to face his adversary, then bowing swiftly, before making a lunging slash to Jaques's leg.

An interesting first move... This battle will not be without merit.

Jaques quickly swung his sword down, to block Ashra's. They were engaged in a sword lock for a moment.

Jaques Then brought up his leg, and attempted to kick Ashra's sword to the side.

Immeditly after doing this, then if he succeeded, he would bring up his sword in a vertical slashing motion at Ashra's chest.

As Jaques's foot comes closer, Ashra pulls back his sword before it can be hit. He dodges to his right with a quick roll, then pulls out a small white pin. He begins to trace the first line of runes on his sword with the pin. As each rune is completed, it gives off a soft green light, only noticable in the sunshine because of the reflectiveness of the sword. Ashra's wide open to attacks while he's tracing, so this is your chance...

(ooc: Think about our movements here. Your back is to the big tree now, if you turned to face Ashra.)

Were this a battle to the death, then Ashra would die right here, and right now. However, as Jaques was forbidden to use the death spell, then something less deadly was needed.

Instead, he used a lesser form of the death spell. This did not require charging, and as a result was not one of the most powerful things.

This spell, were is succesful, would take the very sould out of the body of its target, and damage it severly. Were it a full death spell, then the spirit would be destroyed. But as it was, the spirit would only take damage.

This attack would slow the opponent, and make it so that until Jaques wished to release it, then the target would be deaf, and nearly blind.

As Jaques's spell reaches for the soul of Ashra, it finds its way blocked by some unknown force. Ashra sighs in disappointment as the spell fizzles into nothingness, and continues tracing runes as he speaks.

You attempted a soul crush? When I was within twenty miles of my sister's spirit tree, let alone ten feet? A foolish choice indeed. Perhaps you thought I considered the savior of this grove my sister out of honor, not bloodline? No, my sister truly does live on in this tree... And my soul is bound to it, long as I remain nearby. No one can destroy the collective soul of the forest, so I remain guarded here.

However, I underestimated you. You do indeed hold powerful magic within you... It is a pity that it be wasted in dueling. I myself am not very strong, but here I am at peace, and that is the best defense of all.

With these words, he finishes tracing the second row of runes, then pockets the needle. He holds the sword out in front of him, and it bursts into... not flame, but something oddly similar, though it is a tainted purple in color. Occasionally, a white spark runs the length of the blade, leaving a trail of white in the dark flames that is quickly reabsorbed.

I apologise for the delay. I will now battle you to the full extent of my ability.

ooc: Is this fire in any way related to the element fire?

ic:

"I will be glad you battle you with your full strength. I must admit, I did believe it was out of honour. Later I would like to hear how that happened."

Jaques brought up his sword in a medium defensive posture. "But now it is your turn to attack."

(ooc: Nope, it's a unique element, known as voidflare. It has absolutely nothing to do with fire, darkness, or holy, except for how it looks.)

Indeed? Then, allow me...

With these words, Ashra brings his sword back around behind him at waist height, twisting as he does so. Holding that position for barely an instant, he proceeds to spin his blade up and across at head-height. The sword is intended to pass within a hairsbreadth of Jaques's neck without making contact, but as it does so, some of the voidflare from his blade will leak off from inertia. The result should be a short line of the miasma impacting Jaques's chest as Ashra jumps back from his opponent.

But simultaneously, the tree that Ashra claims is his sister's is swiftly covered in a strange, green-glowing moss. This moss contains special magics that dissipate voidflare that it touches. However, this same magic causes the moss to corrode metal that touches it. This is a side-effect to which Ashra is unaware.

(ooc: Voidflare has some unique properties you should know about. Among them, when it comes in contact with nonliving matter, it passes right through - Thus, armor is incapable of stopping it, unless it's very special armor indeed. It explodes on contact with blood, and otherwise has the properties you'd expect from superheated gasses.)

ooc: Okay, then I suppose the Jaques' power over the elements would fail here.

ooc2: Also, I'm assuming that what your attacking me with is the moss, which sends out the voidflare if it touches someone.

ic: Jaques quickly took a breath, and burnt any moss coming his way, and made his body start sending out extreme heat, making it so that any moss within a yard of him was instantly burned.

Then Jaques made it so that all the earth under the moss lifted up, carrying the moss with it, and to fly at Ashra.

"Were that to have succeeded, it would have killed me. I thought we agreed to no lethal spells?"

(ooc: No, I'm sorry. My attack was the voidflare from the sword. I'm sorry if I was misleading, but all the moss does is... 'turn off' any Voidflare that touches it, as well as rusting metal. The moss exists to justify Ashra using a harmful spell that could have damaged his sister's tree, and the moss is ONLY on the tree. The only thing I'm really attacking with is a tiny bit of voidlare, coming off of Ashra's weapon. I should have mentioned how small that bit was, but rest assured that unless you're evil (I'm going to guess that you aren't) the voidflare would only give you a small burn, like that you get if you touch something metal that came out of an oven. Ashra really doesn't want to use lethal force anyway. I'm sorry that I was so unclear, and I hope we can keep going...)

ooc: Ah, okay then, no problem. I'll be going against the flare then.

ic: the voidflare just went at Jaques, and was absorbed quickly. "Attacking a dragon with heat? You should know better than that."

Now that Jaques absorbed the element, he knelt down, and for the next post he would staying kneeling, then have elemental control over the element voidflare belonged to. Now is your chance to strike.

Indeed. I should know better... And I do. If you try to gain control of my voidflare, it will taint you and follow you forever. I know this, because I only have this power by the evil of another... It will consume you from inside if you accept it. I can only survive by remaining in this sacred forest. Please do not do this to yourself.

No, I cannot trust you to save yourself. My magic is still ready...

With these words, Ashra snaps his fingers. The voidflare that had been absorbed condenses into a tiny sphere... in Jaques's bloodstream, specifically in his left hand. It promptly explodes, almost certainly dealing massive damage to Jaques, but simultaneously purging the insinuating evil from his soul. Whever or not the attack succeeds, Ashra suffers huge amounts of backlash damage as his eyes bleed black blood for a moment. He can't purge himself, as to destroy even a tiny amount of voidflare causes him untold pain.

The explosion itself is not very large, but has lots of force behind it. By its very nature, it doesn't leave the body until the aftereffects have calmed down, so it won't do anything to the skin. There will probably be a few broken bones in the arm and hand, though- Even at dragon strength. At the same time, being purged of such a small amount can't kill you, and Ashra knows enough healing magic to undo any real damage he causes.

I apologise. That spell was... Uncalled for, yet I had to stop you from channeling my curse. I hope you understand.

Jaques' arm was broken, though his hand was fine for the moment. Fortunatley, Jaques armour was right against his skin, and so the armour could support his arm. However, he hoped he would not have to do any real fighting with the blade, as he would be forced to fight with only his right hand.

"I could have handled it myself. I'll hope you have good healing powers after this battle."

Suddenly smal mounds of dirt and rock lifted itsself up, and went at Koneko, forming itsself into multiple little balls, that were extremely strong, and very small. They flew at Koneko's eyes, face, and all vital spots. They would go at a fast speed, with plenty of force.

(ooc: Dude. You're attacking Koneko? I'll just pretend that was Ashra. Thanks for the laugh, though.)

I do not doubt your abilties, nor my own-

Ashra's reply is cut short by a pressing need to do something about the rapidly incoming spheres of earth. Holding his sword horizontally at his eye level, he rushes the first sphere, one about the size of a basketball, thrusting high and hard. He impales it through the center all the way to the hilt of his blade, and its color fades into a deep purple before exploding in a shower of violet light in front of Ashra. He quickly turns, and cleaves through another orb on a collision course with his spine, slicing it into neat halves before it also dematerializes. With a slight flourish, Ashra brings his blade up and into the path of two more rocks, which this time are destroyed by rays of creamy white light from the active runes before they can come in contact with the edge of the blade. With each bubble popped, the white sparks along the length of Ashra's sword are growing stronger and more numerous, and some of the runes are beginning to highlight themselves... This seems to surprise Ashra, and for just an instant he halts his swordfighting display long enough to be hit in the stomach by a jagged rock. He drops his weapon, yells a curse in some forbidden language, and pulls an extremely sharp knife out of a hidden pocket in his armor. He stabs viciously at the rock, diving to the side to avoid another flight of boulders, and manages to finally break the rock off of his chest. It can now be easily seen why the giant pebble got stuck: Sticky purplish blood is oozing from a large wound, and quickly coagulating around the edges. Ashra picks up his sword and stands up slowly, at least in comparison to the speed of his other maneuvers. It seems as though he is about to be hit by the remaining three stones, when suddenly a flock of ravens finishes its descent. Each one flies into a seperate ball, beak-first, and as each is hit, it disintegrates along with one of its birds. The remaining pieces fly together, reforming Ashra's cloak on his back, as he points his blade at his opponent once more, the knife having disappeared into whatever pocket dimension it came from...

And to think, all of this in less than five seconds...

Fine... You... got lucky... Try again!... And this time... don't use... the sacred ground... As a weapon!

Coughing and wheezing, it seems like Ashra won't be able to put up much more of a fight. Surprisingly, though, he speaks a single word, completely inaudible, and his weapon's purple and white fires spike into red and black, his golden eyes flaring a deep indigo flame as he tells his opponent the purpose behind his fury...

I warned... you... At the beginning... Not to harm the forest!

The fire from his sword chooses that moment to leap from the metal to the bandages on his hands. They unravel, showing a pure blackness where there should be skin, strong enough to hold his weapon aloft, and now burning with a bright red flame... Ashra runs towards his enemy, jumping as he nears, slashing down furiously towards the head of Jaques, now blinded by his anger...

(ooc: You're in trouble now! Don't mess with the forest, he said, but YOU didn't listen! Besides that, did you notice the number of different words I used to describe the sacred earth? Another victory for the pocket thesaurus!)

ooc: I agree, were they truely basketball sized, I could be. However, I said they were small. And of course, picking up dirt from the ground really doesn't harm the forest does it?

Now, dodge it knowing that they are about a centmenter wide, and could easily get through a flock of birds.
