And nobody has said Fist of the North Star because the majority of the anime fanbase have seen few classics.

That said, I think /.hack should go with WhiteRose0's selections because they contain more of the 'essential' anime. Ones that not everybody sees nowadays(Although I have DVDs of every single one of them ), but certainly should. Those are some really nice definitive titles who give you a nice taste of what anime can be.

Some other necessary anime are Galaxy Express 999, Mobile Suit Gundam(you can just watch the 3 compilation movies, if need be), and Great Teacher Onizuka.

That was a bad example, but the point I was trying to get across is that shonen's all follow a similar plot style revolving around the characters and their development.

And I've seen Yuu Yuu subbed, uncut (I do not watch anime on Adult Swim, or any other kind of anime segment on TV anymore), it still didn't really interest me.

A little shift here, if you want humor, some good ones are:
- Shinobuden 2x2 - Awesome Ninja comedy, very random.
- School Rumble - You'll keep watching it and wondering why, and what the point is.
- Excel Saga - Even though it's old, it's a good series.
- Genshikkan - An anime about people who love and watch anime, and read manga.

I'd also highly recommend GTO, awesome series. The Live Action series to it is also very good.

How is Excel Saga old? (1999-2000) And although I'm not entirely crazy about it, I prefer Furi Kuri.
