Ever notice that? Maybe it's just me, but I find getting dollars in my hand first and THEN change to be kind of annoying. Sometimes change slips and falls on the ground, or you have to transfer that change to your other hand or someplace so you can put that dollar(s) away, in your wallet or whever, unless you just want to crumble it up when grabbing it with the change. Some people, every once and awhile hand me change first and then whatever bills, which is nice and much easier to handle. It's one of those annoying things that bugs me when buying stuff. Anyone else like this? |

It doesn't bother me because I just love crumbling up bills so much that's it has become a bad habit.

I'd rather have the change first then the bills I do hate it when they give you the bills then the change. It slips and Im like PICK IT UP FOR ME DAMNIT! When they give it to me dollar then change I usually do crumple it up and throw it into the purse so I dont drop anything

1) Which is worth more? 2) It acts as a mat, I guess. Seriously. 3) Eighteen Dollars...[hands bills]...and ex-amount of cents [hands change]...it's just in their head. (edited by Prier on 08-01-05 03:48 PM) |

Originally posted by Prier Those are my reasons, too. Especially 3, when they read off how much change you are getting, it's dollar amount and then change. So.. you get bills first, then change. |

I don't mind getting them in that order. I just tilt my hand and let the change go into my palm, under the bills.

ditto...it is natural for us to read bills first than change and it is easier to wrap the change up into the bills... also, saying one method is better is than the other is similar to saying which direction you should turn the key when unlocking a car |

We read from left to right, so it's natural for the cashier to hand you the bills and then coins, in that order. Japanese people read from right to left, so they give you the coins and then bills, unless it's switched around. THEN they give you the bills and then coins. (Just guessing here, it's kind of logical.) |

It just makes more sense I guess... Like it was said before "X amount of dollars, and X amount of change" Plus, you could always hand them another bill instead of change. |

I noticed this as well, and I came up with a simple solution: I have the bags or whatever in my left hand. So I take the bills they give me with my left hand, and the change with my right. Then I put the change in my pocket, and move the bills into my right hand. I then put the bills into my pocket. Then I go home and put the money into my money box of sorts. Simple. Or you could always bring a cup and ask them to put your coins and bills into it. |

Originally posted by Keikonium Well it's never that complicated, haha. If they put change on top of the money, you can easily slip it into the other hand and put the bills away. Usually if I get change, I throw it in a tip jar. I hate change unless there are quarters. |

It takes me too long to do that, because I'm anal about that and all the bills have to face the right way and be in ascending order.

I too think they give you the bills first, mainly since they come first, then the coins when they hand the change to you, and say how much is there. Also, as Prier said, it acts as a mat, which I'd say is just to keep you from acidentally dropping one or more coins. It's not really a big deal to me which they give first, as I sort through the coins to find anything less than a quarter, and stick it in one of my empty pockets, then the rest goes in the pocket the money came from. Anything less than a quarter goes in a box hidden in my room (to prevent my sister from stealing from it), and the bills and coins above a quarter get hidden somewhere else, but I really should consider locking them away So in short, it doesn't matter which the clerk gives me first, as it's going to get sorted out before leaving the store |

Wow. I've... never thought of this, and probably would have never thought of this. It really doesn't matter to me. It is no harder for me to hold onto the coins if I get the bills first.

Prevents shortchanging. Edit: Don't bother looking it up. It's a technique to get more money by playing off of innumeracy and such. You can probably find it somewhere. (edited by X-Fairy on 08-03-05 12:55 PM) |
