okay, so i have a listing of the nes instruction set. now where do i go to begin to learn what to look for in the assembly of a game (fceud maybe?) to find formats and data for things such as (ill use ff for example) armor data,,monster info, etc? i know its already been documented for this particular example, but i wanna write an editor for a nes game that hasnt been done yet.. thanks

One word: Breakpoints.

I'll leave it to someone who's done some NES work to elaborate.

Use FCEUXD or FCEUXDSP, and poke around in the debugger. Start with something simple like an infinite lives hack.

It always does - every game's coded differently.

You could do a GBC Pokémon game. You won't learn NES ASM but you will learn the basics of ASM, which will make it much easier.
