So I started hacking CV again, and I put some pics up in the general screenchot section, but I figured I should give it it's own thread. Here's some pics of the 1st level and the 4th level.

Level 1: The Ancient Sanctuary

Level 4: Castle Entrance

Those are nice, Dr. Mario; you really have some graphics editing talent!

Is is just my imagination or is Simon a little shorter than usual?

Nope, everything is just huge in the background. So in comparison he looks pretty small.

You're talking about a hack Thaddeus was making. Everything came to halt when he had to go to the army, and that was about a year ago?

Are you using a custom palette, Doc? I don't remember seeing shades of brown quite that dark on the nes palette. Also, you could use a bit of variation in either color or level variety. Give your Castle Entrance some pillars or archways or some such. Perhaps use more black, as your patterned background seems a bit solid (this is where the archways would come into play). Other than that, this is a good looking level. You did a great job on that marble looking floor.

Yeah I'm using a custom palette. The archway sounds like it could be a good, easy idea to put in.

*Disch stabs custom palettes

Part of the challenge of making a hack is working around the limitations of the systems. One of the limitations of the NES is a crappy palette. I say you should deal with it, or pick a new system to have interest in. Custom palettes is super-cheating.

Regardless, if you decide to do custom palettes anyway, at least do what BitBlade did with his and make two versions. The REAL one (no custom palette) and the cheat one (with the custom palette).

** disclaimer **

imo

Mein got! We hath mortally offended the Disch once again!

Leave him alone, Disch. You can't seem to see beyond your loyalist NES emulation point of view. Keep this in mind: this is EMULATION. This is not the real NES, nor will it ever be. And for the record, the nes palette may be damn near impossible to reproduce accurately. Any rendition of it or any emulation of the NES is fake, by your own logic (if you care to take it that far). My point is who gives a bloody rats ass if it's perfectly emulating the nes (other than yourself)? One of the greatest things about emulation is that you don't have to adhere to original restrictions, and you would say that's one of the worst things. Well, I honestly don't give a shit how you would label custom palette roms, or anything else that's markedly different from purist emulation. The point is we don't want to hear it when we sure as well aren't going to change our minds. One of the NES's greatest flaws WAS it's rigid palette, and you know what? Nintendo never repeated that mistake. We don't have to live with this mistake, either, which is my whole argument. When it comes down to it 'it's not the real nes' and 'this makes it fake' are totally irrelevant, especially in light of the fact that this is emulation. If you can't resist the urge to retaliate to this post then send your response in a pm. I'm not going to clutter up Doc's thread just because we have a difference in opinion.

He has made a hack without custom pallette and now hes making one with it. I have nothing against it at all, it makes the hack look better overall. You may say its cheating but Dr. Mario is amazing with gfx, I would like to see you do better. This is a great hack and I have played level one already.

I agree with palletes "cheating" the original, but for some hacks, such as lags_80's RED and BLUE series, four basic colors just doesn't cut it.

Maybe I should jump in here seeing how it's my hack. Two things about me using a custom palette:

1) It's not like I'm doing something crazy that most emulators can't handle. Seeing how most emulators today are capiable of using custom palettes, then I don't think that's much of a problem, but I'm sure someone will end up saying that it is.

2) Do you think I really care if it would run on an NES? I don't have the resources to make a hack run on an NES so it's not sweat off my back. I do gfx, that's sort of my thing. I mean I do full level hacks too, but I'm skilled and enjoy editing graphics. If I see an oppotunity to make my graphics look better then I'm going to take it. If you want me to release a version that will probably look like crap, then fine. Just as long as you promise to download it, if not then screw it. I'm going to continue to work as planned.

Another thing is, eternaldragonx, if you want Alucard in a hack, do it yourself. Kudos if it looks good. I got a story with this hack, so Simon is staying in.

Looks pretty good. I don't really agree with using custom palettes, but there is a lack of good dark colors to use in a Castlevania hack. Just one tip: on the last shot, give the ceiling/ground a different set of colors so that they don't blend in with the background too much. Or, at least have the ground use mainly one of the four colors and the background use mainly another of the four colors (like have the ground use mainly a lighter brown and the background use mostly a darker one).

Yeah, that last one definately isn't complete. I have ways to go with it. I was taking a little time off to looks at some music data, and compare it to a few other Konami games that came out at the same time.

Ok, here's the thing with custom palettes. If you want the custom palettes, then use them. If you don't, then don't download the hack or just awe at the giant eyesore courtesy of the NES. What the fuck are we hacking for? To stay with the shitty technology? Hell no! The reason we emulate is for the state of nostalgia. If you want to keep the custom palettes for the sake of nostalgia, then you must want the original levels and GFX too. That being said, Disch can go fuck himself.

Talent is creativity. When it comes to NES hacking, you don't HAVE to work around the limitations thereof. That's not talent. Its EGO. If you have talent, then you can do great things, regardless of palette. Or anything else for that matter. Sure, you have one more file to download and load in the emulator... is that so bad though?

Custom palettes are clearly better.

Not anymore. Didn't you see? I unlocked the NES's potential with my XTREME NES demo. Why limit yourself to crappy 2bpp graphics when you can have true-image colors and CD quality sound! The NES has never looked so good!
