Alot of times English dubs are looked down upon by "Hard core anime fans", but why not focus on when the dubbing went right?

Personally the best dubbed anime ive ever seen had to be:
-Cowboy Bebop (better than the Japanese counterpart)
-Trigun (I just enjoyed it for some reason)
-Wolfs Rain (The dub was overall, pretty good)
Tarale

The dubs for the Studio Ghibli animes are reasonable. Occasionally the actors used gets slightly distracting, but generally the dubs are well done.

Trigun, no contest my favorte English dub. I taped every single episode of Trigun because it's such a great show. The last episode is my favorite because the fight between Vash and Knives was awesome.

I'll agree with the Trigun dub. That one I can watch through as well as the sub.

A REALLY good one, in my opinion, though would be Yuu Yuu Hakusho. Far and away one of the better one from Funi. I'd watch Dark Tourney over and over again and not get tired of it or the voice actors.

Well, the Robotech dub was good for its time. Now adays it is so campy it rules.

The dub for Speedracer is classic.

And yeah, as Tarale said, Studio Ghibli does it awesomely. They use TALENT now wineos that they find on the street (okay, Patrick Stewart...). But still, I honestly prefer the Mononoke dub to the sub

It's because Studio Ghibli gets real actors to do voice overs, and they also understand the meaning of variation! Which apparently other studios don't. (Hey, is that Spike's voice again!?! Yay! ...)

I agree with you guys though, Trigun was definitely done nicely, and I honestly prefer the dub over the sub. Meryl and Millie sound way too much alike in Japanese, and I wasn't a fan of Vash's Japanese voice either.

dubs are just starting to piss me off though. I'm sick and tired of seeing Steve Blum in every single licensed anime on the face of this Earth (Spike's voice). He'll be doing Kakashi's voice over for Naruto, how does that kind of voice fit the character? You tell me ...

I disagree with Yu Yu though, I hated the voice overs, I just got sick of hearing Gohan again. Then again I didn't care for that show altogether.

So yeah, I've just gotten really picky these days ...

Most old dubs are absolutely fantastically horrible though. Crest of the Stars for example, great anime, but robotic voice overs. Ugh.

Not really. Carl Macek received DEATH THREATS because of what he did to Macross. And there were some pretty ridiculous lines. Some that will go down in history.
"Captain Gloval, sir!"
"Yes, what is it, Sammy?"
"No smoking on the bridge."
"Oh, I wasn't smoking it, I was merely holding it."

And no, I NEVER prefer a dub over a sub. Regardless of how good it sounds, it changes the interpretation. Anime is an artform.

Trigun, naturally, Wolf's Rain, Read Or Die (Movie and Series). ROD is an awesome anime worthy of recognition in the annals of art history. I have often times dreamed of being a Papermaster, or threatened to impale my friends with paper swords and spears... Ah... What a great life tat must be.

In the Read Or Die OAV (thought not TV series), I think Kimberly Yates did a superb job at playing as Yomiko Readman, probably an even better job than the Japanese seiyuu.

I know what you guys are thinking, "Blasphemy, blasphemy! Burn in hell, spawn of Satan!"

I don't see why so many people like the Cowboy Bebop dub or even prefer it over the sub... The guy who plays Spike is stiff as a board, without any kind of range whatsoever. He has a cool sounding voice, but he can't act. Jet sounds like a total turd, instead of the caring, almost fatherly quality of the Japanese voice, and Faye simply does not sound that sexy or intimidating. The English voice for Ed ain't bad at all (it's actually real similar)...but I still think I prefer the Japanese voice.

Mononoke's dub is done pretty well. Ashitaka sounds very much like the Japanese voice, and I love the guy who does a number of the extras, one of them being Kohroku the ox-driver. He's an AMAZING voice actor (I don't know his name or if he's done voices for anything else), but other than him, I much prefer the superior Japanese track. (Gillian Anderson, as hot as she is and as sexy as her voice is, just didn't do very good acting...that and I wouldn't wanna think of Moro as sexy. The Japanese voice is more fitting: old and bitter.)

I prefer subs over dubs. Usually, they're far superior, both in dialog/meaning and voice acting. There are some hideous dubs out there, one of them being Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (why they went and changed the entire nature of the parasite hand, I don't know), though it, like a lot of crappy dubs, has a good voice actor, in this case being Dwight Schultz who played Benge and the Old Man of Barbarois. I can't wait for the sub of this movie to be released towards the end of this year. (For those who will retaliate and say that the English track is the original one, you're wrong--it just got recorded first and was shown to the public even in Japan before the Japanese track was. All of the dialog was rewritten from the original script.)

The thing is, a lot of US companies just don't seem to care that much about voice acting. That or they just really suck at deciphering who's good and who's not. In Japan (in many cases), it seems that they care a lot about who they pick for certain roles, and the actors themselves put a lot of heart into their acting to convey the emotions and/or nature of the character and so forth. One thing I like about Japanese voice actors is they overemphasize/overact their parts. It's a way of putting a lot of expression to the drawings. I like that.

However, one dub I really love is the one for the Macross Plus OVA (my most favorite freaking anime ever). I've watched it multiple times over the years, and I really like the voice acting and the dialog. I only just saw the sub about a month ago, and I don't think I like it as much as the dub. Of course, maybe that's just because I'm so used to the dub that that's kind of the way the series is meant to be in my eyes (and ears).

I haven't seen the sub of Cowboy Bebop but I liked the dub. I was conent with the dub, I did see the Cowboy Bebop movie subbed but that was back when I wasn't used to hearing Japanese so I was like but I'd likely watch the sub of the show and compare.

Tenchi Muyo was decent but it was one of the first Animes I watched too. I haven't watched that in awhile it'd be good to watch now and to catch up with the anime times

The only dub I've been able to watch without vomiting was the one for Princess Mononoke. I find that one pretty good, compared to the horrible Love Hina dub ;P
