I need to get a clock that will count down 4 years from July 18th 2005 to July 18th 2009, down to the seconds. I saw a timer in Xkeeper's layout counting down to his 18th birthday, and a clock like that would be perfect. Except because mine would be down to the seconds, it would always be moving. I am pretty sure this is possible with .php but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have a host for .php (www.funpic.org) so thats not a problem.

If someone can help me in making this, that would be awesome! Thanks.

no problem

sure HH, go ahead. ive got 15gb bandwidth, so I dont think a couple count down scripts will eat very much of it up.

How big is the script though? I'd hate to find out it was like 250K just for a timer in my sig. (I'd make one in PHP but I'm too lazy busy.)

Also the Java console keeps saying 'malformed URL, check applet tag', any idea why?

Eh, well I'm getting rid of it anyway. If anyone knows of code for a PHP version (or one I can use like the Java applet) I'd appreciate it, but this takes up too many resources.

Some work in progress DOM/Javascript code: http://www.ramsus.net/misc/clock.js

Example: http://www.ramsus.net/misc/clock.html

I don't know if it works in IE6, and it doesn't seem to work within posts (a good thing too):

Clock loading...

It's designed to allow multiple clocks with the same time/name though, so with multiple posts can have the same clock in them. However, every user needs a unique clockname.

Just make an external HTML file and stick it in an iframe.

I was going to ask you if I could use your clock thru a PM Xkeeper, but I had looked up one of your posts, and realized that it didn't move constantly. If the current Java clock that I have uses up to many resources, will you be taking it offline Dcahrakos? If so, would I beable to have the files and upload it to my own site, if thats even possible.

He means that it takes up too much resources to see it.

As in "no one likes it because it's a resource hog."

I have to agree. Just use a static one, it's not like people read those timers anyway.

I have one for you, but apparently iframes dont like to be shown in posts, I can see it in my profile, and in the preview in edit layout, but not in a post...so I dunno, but here

<iframe src=http://dcah.us.to/countd.html height=25 width=343 frameborder=0>
needs the closing tag too, /iframe

Something about a static countdown clock bothers me...

What bothers you about it. I don't like it as much as a moving one (thats why I kept both. I'm think about putting the moving one in my profile tho), but the static one does look better. I will --hopefully-- be getting help with a new layout, so that way I can keep the static one in the top right cornor.

So thank you for the clock thing Xkeeper. You don't mind if I link to it off your site do you? If you do, just tell me and it will be removed asap.

It's a countdown clock. It should be counting down.

I hate Java applets though.

It does.

And moving countdown clocks are stupid, unless they're on a desktop. Mainly because I do not feel like having something taking up resources just to count down constantly, especially when I see it for mabye 1 second anyway.

Year sure, if you consider a static image as counting anything. I could care less if it's dynamically generated each time the script loads.

Right, because a half dozen or so lines of Javascript called every second is just so resource intensive. Just because one example used a Java applet doesn't mean every dynamic solution is just as bad.

I would suggest not using a countdown clock simply because movement is distracting from content (i.e. it's bad layout design), but if you're going to have something you want to call a countdown clock, then by God, it better count down. Otherwise, it just feels like an ugly misnomer.
