I just recently started hacking SMW and I'm finally getting the hang of things, so I began working on a hack. Currently, the 1st level is done, the overworld for the 1st world is done, the title screen is done, and I'm about halfway done with the 2nd level. Here are a couple of screenshots:

I'm probably going to release a demo after I finish the 1st world. Tell what you guys think of those shots and if you have any suggestions for improving them.

I don't see any errors with the overworld, and the palette is nice. Thw water fall in the top left looks odd, thats about it. It seems to wide.

The level background is very nice. I have been looking thru the mega man games looking for that background, but can't seem to find it. You wouldn't happen to know would you? I think SMWEdit ripped it once didn't he.

Anyway, I like the sonic FG to, its lookin good.

Keep up the good work. I will look forward to more from you!

I got the background from the ExGFX Workshop. It's from sting chameleons level in Mega Man X. Also, does anyone know how to add new tiles to the overworld?

I know the foreground graphics are from the ExGFX Workshop, but it might look better if you added to them... After all, 8-bit GFX don't look too great with 16-bit, especially with the nice Background.

Extract the graphics, and you can edit them (Sorry, not sure which file). I believe this is the only way to add new tiles to the overworld- You'll probably have to draw over existing tiles.

About the first level shot. I just noticed that MARIO in the status bar is miscoloured. That needs to be fixed.

Level 2's BG is really nice. You must have used alot of palettes for the gradient. Maby adding some clouds in the BG would make it look better. The FG is very ugly tho. It's way to green, and it doesn't look good without black outlines. Add some more color and black outline and it will look good.

The status bar in this shot is nice tho.

Erm, lol. This is my tileset from the ExGFX Workshop and the gradient uses only one palette.
Anyway, use a different FG or maybe change the palette. The first two shots are nice tho.

I finally started to get some more work done. I fixed some things up and got a lot of work done on the 3rd level. Here are some screenshots of the 3rd level w/ my own foreground gfx.







I'm mostly looking for comments on the gfx, like if there's any way I can improve them. Also, is there any way to prevent Mario in the status bar from changing colors?

Holy crap that whale is cool! I like that shot the best yet out of all of them. The FG graphics are okay, but the circles are a bit too big imo. Are the crabs animated or are they enemies?

About the mario name in the status bar: The top row (row 0) in the palette editor controls the color. It is the 9th, 10th, and 11th palette color I think. It is redish pink I know that. Just don't use that color square in your BG's and you will be fine.

The BG for the 3rd level is awesome. I almost thought that the BG on the third screen of the underwater level was part of the level that you can stand on. Is it?

EDIT: By the way, you overworld looks great for your first hack, much better than my overworld.
