Or, Don't Fuck With the NCAA. Baylor's men's basketball team was banned from playing nonconference games for one season and placed on five years' probation by the NCAA on Thursday for numerous rules violations found after a former player murdered a teammate in 2003. After Carlton Dotson killed Patrick Dennehy, it came out that the head coach paid tuition for two players and the team didn't report some failed drug tests, among other rules violations. Baylor imposed a ton of penalties on themselves, including a postseason ban and the chance for any player to get out of his scholarship. (I think the NCAA waived the one-year waiting period for anyone who wanted to transfer.) As for the disgraced coach? Any NCAA school that wants to hire (ex-coach Dave) Bliss in the next 10 years must appear before the Committee on Infractions to determine limitations on his activities. One former assistant will be subject to this procedure for seven years and two others for five years. Not like I could imagine ANYONE hiring the guy, EVER. Sucks for the women's basketball team, considering they won the NCAA title this year and now they get overshadowed by the men. |

Um... I'm just going to GUESS that they'd have to win their conference to get to the dance since - even if they only had two or three losses in the regular season - they can't possibly have enough wins for the selection committee to take them seriously. Oh well. At least they'll rest up early in the season thanks to that. The situation is actually quite hilarious considering what brought it about. |

makes me wonder...why exactly they can't get out of their scholarship... i mean, you can leave schools but you just can't play for the other school The situation is actually quite hilarious considering what brought it about. i guess...goes to show that once attention is brought onto you, people will start asking for more i'm pretty sure that all these infractions would not have been discovered until after the players had left the school as in the Michigan incident a few years back... anyways, i believe they should still be able to make the NIT if they aren't allowed in the NCAA tourney (provided they have a good season first) |

Originally posted by neotransotaku I'd think they would have a hard time with that. You have to finish at or above .500 but I dunno how many wins they'd require. I can't imagine them getting in at, say, 8-8. |

Depends who those 8 wins are against. But yeah... smart money would say that they'd only get in by winning the conference and I'd guess they'd turn down a NIT spot as further punishment. Now... how many other programs are hiding this stuff like Baylor was? |

i remember San Jose State made the tourney with a 13-16 record back in 1996 with an 0-1 conference record (source) Colleen, that's a good question... |
