This thread is mainly just to throw out my ideas on the overworld design before some else might possibly use them. It is also a thread for your comments on what may need to be improved. So if you see something that looks weird or out of place, point it out! Here it is:

EDIT: Overworld Picture Has Been Updated. Here is the old one if you still want to see it: Old Overworld

The things I added are:
- Cliff overhang on the waterfall
- Animated cheep-cheeps in the water
- Another shade of orange in the sky (this was HELL TO DO!!)
- Got rid of the aliens.
- Added in...3? visible levels. Some you can't see, cause something needs to be a surprise. I think there are 4 more...
- Edited some palette on most maps.
- Fixed water tile in the forest, and added a level called "Forest Stump"...sound like something?
- Added some detail to star world...it doesn't look to overcrowed does it?
- Finished all the "special world passed" palettes.
- Some other stuff probably.

Super Mario Era: Bowser's Revenge Overworld

I know it shows all events revealed, which may have been a mistake, but it's the only way to point out errors and such. Plus there is 1 final event that isn't revealed, which will change the way this entire thing looks anyway. So let me know what you think!

Also, this uses alot of ExGFX, and some of my exits make the graphics messed up. Could a patch possibly be made to fix that problem, so that new graphics are loaded upon map entry from ANY TYPE of exit/entrance? And I have ExGFX space left, so anything else I might possibly add?

EDIT: Layout removed

Absolutely positively awesome!

That first screenshot is the first image on the internet to make me involuntarily say "Holy Fuck"!

I won't look for errors, but I must say, you kick ass.

Bad things:

The first, and most noticeable thing, is that your paths are way too long. There's also way too many cliff edges near the bottom of the main overworld, it just feels cluttered down towards that end.

Good things:

That giant sun thing in the back is extremely cool, it must've taken up a metric ton of tiles, though. The little poles coming off the bridge are pretty awesome looking too, I like the rippled water effect on the bottom of them particularly.

Thank you all for your comments so far.

@DisruptiveIdiot: Thanks. I really like what I did with it too.

@Juggling Joker: I also think my paths are to long. I will add in a few more levels and switch some paths around. I'm just not that great at level design, so I don't want too many levels. I have changed the way the cliffs at the bottom look a tiny bit. I added in some more land plateaus and some waterfalls. The last event also makes it look less clutered, but I had to leave something unrevealed. The sun at the back was very easy to make. Just load up MsPaint, draw a 1/4 cirlce and there ya go. I think it uses like 16 8x8 tiles or something like that. The poles are there for the events that only reveal half the bridge. It would look weird with a floating bridge. Needed something to make it look normal.

And by the way, I just noticed a graphic glitch in the forest screen. That weird shape behind the 2nd level was susposed to be a water tile.

The main overworld map at the top is just... very cool, I would have never thought of something that cool.

Whoa! That's the best Overworld I've ever seen, it's so cool.

Bad stuff:
I like the entrance hole in the first screenshot, but it seems a little weird to me,
the way it looks. The idea is good, though.

It is a little hard to see the difference of the orange level tiles and the yellow ones.
(Secret exit or Normal only levels)
The palette should be tweaked a little bit.

The waterfall's hole(where the water comes from) should have an outline

Good stuff:
OMG I love that sun!
The other GFX are cool too. Yeah keep it up!

The levels should have that sun somewhere also.
Looking up for the demo!

I thank you all for your comments. I still need more people to point out things that look strange or bad. Kyouji where are you! Anyway, I still have lots of ExGFX space left to add things (not much palette room, but I can figure something out), so if you have any suggestions for things to add, just tell me.

Overall, it looks like you've managed to squeeze roughly one metric fuckton of coolness into that overworld. I like!

The only new things that kinda came to my attention:
- The tops of the skinny little blue mushrooms look kinda weird...maybe bring the front end down a little? The perspective looks a little...uh...wonky to me.
- On the big hill o'waterfalls in the top right of the main OW, I think the middle one looks kinda impossible...like the water above should be continuing to flow over the hole. Would it be possible for you to have some sort of rocky outcropping above the hole, or something?

As for adding something to the moon world...maybe little star-shaped rocks, or meteorite bits or something, dunno what you're going for in that world.

Man, I've never been inspired to play a hack from simply seeing the overworld alone, but it looks really great and makes me look forward to playing this hack. It's good to finally see a hack in progress from you. The suggestions I have are:

1. Try changing the shades of orange in the sky in the overworld to a more gradual change rather than a really dark orange, nearly brown, to significantly lighter shades of orange.
2. Fix that weird little ledge thing is the middle of the bottom left screen, it looks pretty strange, and not so good, what's it supposed to be?
3. In these screens you have some waterfalls that meet the ends of the curved ledges at the bottom of them. These curved ledges have their shadows in the water, and this is good, but in the brown cave shot the top waterfall does not meet a curved ledge yet the shadows are still present. Maybe there are supposed to be curves there that you can't see, but at a first glance it doesn't look right so you might want to fix that up a bit.

Otherwise it looks great. My favorite things are the main overworld clouds, the sun, and the moon graphics. Plus, I can't tell what those little things are on the rocks and pipes in the main OW, is it supposed to be some kind of grass? They kind of look like aliens.

Anyway, judging from the superb job you've done with the overworld design and graphics, you're level graphics should look pretty spiffy too. Hopefully your level designing skills will be great too, so don't let us down.

This is one of the most awesome hacks of SMW I've ever seen. All it needs is some more levels, maybe like 10 more. :/ Great job!

If you ever release the demo and I don't see it, I'd lvoe to test it.

You mean a BG to go behind the sun? Open up Yoshi's Island, go to Watch Out For Chain Chomp and get to the part with the helicopter. That BG kicks ass and would fit perfectly seeing how your island appears to be quite high in the sky.

Also I love the idea of making it one big continent. Awesome design.

Thanks everyone. I would update the picture with my changes suggested by you guys, but I'm in the process of refining the final event and my overworld is abit messy.

@AtmaDragonXT: Those mushrooms are ripped from YI overworld. I will edit them abit to make them look better. Also thanks for pointing them out. They should be red not blue. A rock overhang is an excellent idea! I will get on making that soon, thanks! Star-shaped rocks and meteorite bits are also two excellent ideas! I wanted to add star somethings onto that map but I didn't think of rocks thanks again! @everyone: Would adding a face to the moon be a good idea?

@Golden Yoshi: I really wanted to add in 1 more shade, but I don't really know what colours will work on the overworld. I don't want to mess up palettes in my levels. If your talking about the graphic behind the 2nd level, that was an error I have relized and fixed. It was a graphic glitch I made because I wasn't on the right event page when doing the events. It's supposed to be the round water tile. It's fixed now. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the shadows. Those little green things on the pipes are aliens. I originally had the main map as the moon, and mario would face bowser there. The moon was populated with ANIMATED aliens. I need to make them into something else...not sure what tho. I may just change them back to the pirana plants.

@BaNd: I may release a demo, and I may not. It depends on how much of my game I have completed. I added only 6 more levels since last time. So I need another 4. I will see what I can do. The moon may be a good place for another one.

@HyperHacker: No, I need a BG for the levels that have a good sun-ish theme to them. The overworld is kinda of like a NES game. You have VERY limited palette room. I will check out that level anyway. It may be good for something if I haven't already ripped the BG.

4 Questions that hopefully someone can answer:

1. What palettes can I use for the overworld, and actually have them show up correctly in the game? I did some parts of my overworld using palette 3 (I had more orange shades), but when I played the game, the colours were all messed up.

2. Is it possible to change the "earthquake sound" heard when bowser's head rises out of the ocean to event 0x40? I think its event 0x2B right now, but I'm not sure.

3. Can BMF's Palette ASM patch tool thing create custom overworld [palette] animations also? I don't know how to use the tool, but if it can do this, I may learn.

4. Is it possible/can someone create a patch that will load ExGFX files upon map entry? It reloads new ExGFX when you enter with a pipe or star, but when moving from one map to another with a normal exit, it messes up the ExGFX.

HOLY FUCK. Best. Overworld. Ever.

Three things, though:

1) The orange sun is too plain. Add some rays or something.
2) Two of the pipes in the main OW are fucked up.
3) Star world is too plain.

1) I would if I had some ExGFX space. I will look into it and see if I can make something. But this, I cannot promise.

2) There are aliens on them They are just the koopa kid sprite edited. They are removed for now until I find a good replacement for them

3) I have edited it. I will post a new picture of just Moon World Tommorow for you all to see. I really like what I did with it. It's kinda crowed now tho.

This is all one complete screen. It isn't 7 different screens.

Anyway, I assume you are talking about the cliff parts behind the second level in the forest. That is A MISTAKE MADE BY ME, BY ACCIDENT. I have stated 2 times that I made a mistake. What happened was, because I have used alot of ExGFX on these maps the graphic pages sometimes get mixed up. It is supposed to be a round water tile. Exactly like the second level on YI in the original SMW. It is fixed now. I will actually just update the entire map (all 7 of them) for tommorrow so you can all see what is changed.

I have a cliff made over the water fall.
Added more levels.
Fixed the water tile.
Changed some palettes.
Fixed some glitches that I have noticed.
Edited Moon World.
Removed the aliens.
And some other stuff I think.

So I will update tommorrow with a new screenshot. And names for each of the worlds. I still need one for Moon World, and for the YI map replacement.

Go to the OW boss sequence menu selection, under overworld, and change it to the level at which you want the earthquake to play on when beaten.

3. Can BMF's Palette ASM patch tool thing create custom overworld [palette] animations also? I don't know how to use the tool, but if it can do this, I may learn.

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure that the palette ASM patch only runs during a level...

Looks beautiful. My only criticism is that the waterfalls going straight down in a line like that looks cheesy. Maybe it looks better animated, though? Dunno.
