So the game has been out over 15 years. Everyone knows every secret in the game, and nothing is hidden. Everything has an explanation of sorts, and everything works in certain ways that we all know about 15 years later.

...so why can't we figure out what causes that strange "extra" music that occasionally plays when Mario gets a 1-up?! What causes it? After getting the music in two consecutive levels a couple of days ago, I'm so intensely curious what causes those extra notes to occasionally play before the usual 1-up music. Something's gotta' cause it! Any ideas?! Seems so strange that there's actually still an uncracked secret in the game like this !

So it isn't just me? I'm sure I've heard it to or three times myself too, but I have no idea when, where and why.

Now guys, I'm sure you're eager to increase your post count, but next time could you try and add to the conversation when you do so? Maybe post valuable insight that may answer the initial question or lead to an answer? I mean. Come on guys, you can be better than this. Certainly, I don't know, but then I didn't rush in and post something pointless when I first saw the thread, either.

Hmm... When this happened to me before I just thought it was a glitch in the music.

The same thing happened to me in SMB1, I collected a 1-UP and the music went funny and changed for a short while there too.

What extra music sound? "Berdee-darleedeedee", or "BLAdarleedeedee"?

Sound it out. If it is BLA(....) then it is because the mushroom gaining sound and the 1 up sound are different. Both the big and the 1up mushrooms use the same sounds, but the 1up music overlaps the mushroom sound. Get it?

Indeed, I never thought on that before but the "Powerup" sound (it's also played if you take the star and the flower) is overlayed by the 1-up sound. And well, I also succefully made the game not to play that music piece by forcing the game to not remove the 1-up sprite. Wierd.

Well, I think it's just a glitch. I have been playing around with the music, and I sorta have an idea how it works in my head. It probably just disturbs some sound channel, and that's why that happens. :/

What levels did it happen on? The ones with the regular theme?

Edit: Nevermind, that applied to SMB. xD

Well, I think I heard the extra notes in SMB3 too. I guess it's a glitch of some sort where it plays the same notes again with another pitch.

It's just the 1up sound being different sometimes (extra notes at the start), very rarely, and for no apparent reason, I think I've only gotten it twice ever ...

I'd like to find out about this too, one of us should check how the 1up sound is coded in the game (data for it, and code to play it) and see what might cause it to be different

Kitten Yiffer might be on to something. If the programmers just designed it to play the powerup sound every time it hits Mario, and coded the 1up to just play another overtop of that, they could easily mix together a bit.

And Kyouji, I was pointing out that I've never noticed anything unsual with the music. Seems useful to me.

Yeah! Way to go on digging that question up! It's happened to me ONLY on world seven (level 2?). The outdoor pipe level with the invisiblle music box bridge. SO the explanation makes sense that the two sounds collide to make the new funky one, as it happens when Mario is a-bouncing on the block.

I know i'm a little late to add the input, but just felt that i needed to share my experience.

Copy and paste for the sound:

http://www.geocities.com/plinko50000/smb3.mp3

As for some of these theories, it's not 2 sounds "colliding" or operlapping, as the usual 1up sound does not start until the first part is over. And the first part of that sound is not a sound heard at any other time in the game: it's a sound completely unique to this phenomenon.

Course, what causes the phenomenon to begin with... that's still a mystery.

No, that's not like any other sound I've heard in the game. It seems like it almost has to be intentional, or a glitch putting the sound pointer in the wrong place.

Now, I can't say for certain, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's a little easter egg that happens based on points and the timer when you pick it up, just judging by some of the other things in the game. Or, if I recall correctly, the 1up sound is just a flat tone with its pitch adjusted at several intervals. I suppose it would be possible for errors in the way this routine works to cause this periodically.

Yeah, it's something how the sound works. I seen how the bytes dance around in the memory, and how the music screws up as soon you freeze the values.

BTW, where did you get that soundfile? If you made it yourself, can you state where it happened?

I made it myself, artificially, using a little hack I made, thanks to information I think DharkDiaz provided, where getting 100 coins always plays that music, and turning off the background music in the level.

Interesting... *listens to sound* Hmm... it kinda sounds like... that noise from Legend of Zelda when you find a secret or something... but with an extra note in the front. Could be just me.

Now I heard a variation of the sound when you touch a treasure chest. I was flying thought so it's most likely a small glitching.

Maybe it's something similar with the 1-up case. :/

One time I had a Game Genie and randomly made codes for it. I came up with this strange code where every time I got a 1-up or 100 coins, it made this sound. I do not remember the code, but the first time i did it it freaked me the hell out. The first time I had encountered it was when I was actually in the first level of the first world and I got the 1-up on the sky. The second was in world 4. Several other instances also...

Sorry for the bump, but I had to ask:

Frank15, what exactly did you do in your hack to get that sound to play every time you get 100 coins? I have never heard that sound before, and I was curious to see what info you used to make it play.
