Since you've probably seen most of everything else already, all that's featured here is four screenshots. Four NEW screenshots.

Overworld as it is now Since you're probably wondering, that giant ladder leading up leads to...

This road area in Star World. Completion of Star World 1 opens up the ladder, and 2-4 destroy stuff in your way (so that once all are completed, you can access Star Castle). Naturally, star world warps, and thus access to the areas where you do stuff to unlock the castle, are spread throughout the game.

While I don't have screenshots of the star world levels (since as of posting this the only levels that are actually done since the last demo are Luccara Cemetary and Secret 3 - Early), here's Star Road itself which is pretty much just what's shown here and side exits.

Here's the cemetary area, which as you may have guessed from the new ghost house overworld tile typically accompanies ghost house areas.

In the last screenshot - Those tombstones look... well, unnatural. Might want to lighten the black bits.

Wow! Something man-made, such as a tombstone, that looks unnatural? THIS IS SUCH A HORRIBLE TURN OF EVENTS, ALERT THE MEDIA. Or maybe, just maybe, it doesn't look natural because it isn't.

The gravestones would look nice if they didn't have text on them. As are most of the things that remain from the old version.

As for the rest, you lose.

Star world is just a slight edit.

Nobody likes a road with nothing on it.

The graveyard background is unnatural and the sky is ugly.

The first screenshot looks very nice.
2 and 3 ones no comment.
As for the last one the FG doesnt fit with the BG.
But the tombstones do look nice with the YI ghosts.

This is confusingly worded. Do you mean that most of the things from the old version would look nice if they didn't have text on them, or that they look nice? And for the record, I have versions that both have text and don't have text, and honestly, the ones that have text look at lot better.

You don't have to enter it to progress, though. It's not a level. It's just... There.

Yeah, I'm not gonna deny this. They do look pretty crappy. Backgrounds were never my forte. Still, have you seen the only other graveyard tileset out there? That makes this look like the best thing ever.

I meant to say that the gravestones were the only new things that looked nice. And they don't even look that nice because of the awkward fine text printed across them. What passes for an epitaph these days?

Alright, alright, I've taken glyph phoenix' advice and replaced the text-style lines with more of an old, eroded texture. Recheck the screenshot.

your status bar has to be one of the ugliest ones i have ever seen in a hack...

screen 1: i have seen dozens of better overworlds, i am not saying yours is crap, but it is quite far from being good. Well, that was expectable from the blandness of your levels seen on your last demos, you have never made anything outstanding in your levels, and your level design was always pretty poor. Therefore, it is easy to see why your overworld design is so poor too.

screen 2: wow how did you make THIS? i mean, you should at least have changed the Star World's palletes, but as i said in my last comment it is expectable a bland and non-original overworld by you judging by your level design 'skills'. I hope you think twice next time before posting such a quasi-SMW overworld picture, coz this only makes my interest on your hack reduces even more.

screen 3: don't you have something more than the ground to show us? All i can say is that this looks...good. I think it strongly fits with the 'star world level' theme, so good job here. Still nothing appealing, though.

screen 4: that has to be one of the ugliest backgrounds i've ever seen. It is so non-inspired, and if you can't make a good hand-drawn work, just don't do it, and avoid making such horrid gfx (or try to make your drawing skills better). It is also awfully hard to distinguish the FG from the BG here, and the FG is also pretty ugly with those castle gfx.

well, as always i am not expecting too much from you, but i think with more experience and time with SMW hacking you'll perhaps be able to make something more decent, so good luck and keep us updated on your work.

That's kinda the point, though. It's SUPPOSED to be directly related to SMW. I mean, the game takes place in Dinosaur Land so why would it look really different? I don't believe everything needs to be new in order to make a good hack, and even when I do change things around, which is fairly common, I always try to keep it in the same basic style as that of SMW.

1. Your small tombstones look kinda like pots or jugs. They dont really look like tombstones. Ii understand that working with 8x8 pixels is hard, but try using the "small hill" that came with the game, and changing that so it looks like a tomb stone. Your big tombstones would look good with some shadow. Bad idea to put a level (yellow switch) right next to a level (big red dot). It will look weird when the events come along. 1 lone dirt clump in the top left, with no other ones on the map = no. And grass tiles that go in opposite directions. The green lines on the big ladder need to be made dark or light gray. Other than all that stuff, your overworld is nice. It looks like the original Yoshi's island, shifted to the right, and then the first thing you see when you leave YI pushed down into the bottom of the shot. It looks good, keep it up. Thank god for no palette clashes!! As you can see, im picky when it comes to overworlds (I have re-done mine 5 or 6 times cause I haven't liked them).
You're right about most everything. I'll see if I can rework them to follow what you said. A few things, though - there are some dirt clumps elsewhere. Actually, that area has a lot of them before the star world warp area appears over them. Also, I don't quite follow you when you say there's a clash between tiles that are right next to each other... I haven't heard this complaint before, ever, and when I play the hack with others with ZSNES' netplay feature a few people have even complemented me for not screwing it up by making something ugly despite them being next to each other

2. Once again, almost nothing has been changed. I have an idea for you. You want to keep this "spacial" theme with the starness? Well, make it moon warps instead. Make a "3-up" moon shaped land mass, and work with that. I will tell you now that it will be alot better than a star. Also change the star warps so they look like the 3-up moon shape. Do that, re-work the paths and palettes/ow BG, and it would look awesome. I would love to see you pull it off. BTW, I like the "destroying" parts of the map when beating a level to gain access to another level idea.
Again, it looks the same because I don't want it to be different. It's fine how it is, and it's not like we've seen it all too much - heck, I can't think of a single other hack that had the overworld changed that had a Star World.

Edit: Except Demo World. And it doesn't really compare, seeing as all semblance of a ground was removed in it.

4. WTF are the poles growing out of the tombstones??? I would suggest adding a iron rod gate in the BG with koopa's and goomba "fixtures" at the top points of the gate. Know what I mean? I think it would look good. Also, darken the BG palette (those tombstones are BG right?). Also, dont use forest ground and castle ground in the same level. Make your own graphics out of one of them, or both. Right now it looks bad with "natural" ground like dirt and stuff, while mario walks on "man-made" ground that looks like stone or metal. Custom graphics Kyouji! Come on you know better. Add some clouds in the BG also, and maby a moon?!?.

EDIT:

The new shot looks okay. You need some text on there tho. Maby just a 16x16 block (or 16x32) of text squiggles, and it would look good.

</edit>

Yeah, okay. Actually, I was never really satisfied with the look and practically my entire intention in posting this thread was to get feedback on the graveyard design. The koopa and goomba fixtures thing is actually a really nice idea. Thank you, kei. And I probably will use different ground graphics. I think the grassland graphics I'm using now would look good in it if I gave it the right palette, actually.

You are always harping on us about level design, something I haven't seen in these shots, previous shots, or the demo. Either the design has been to hard, to easy, or fairly unchanged. YOU should take your advice and fix this stuff.
Where was it too hard? Seriously, this one really gets me The only even remotely hard part of the hack, as far as I know, was the boss battle in Mysterious Castle 2, which is being redone in the new version. Everything else simply took a little practice for new players to beat. Reason parts of it were rather easy is because, well, again, the original SMW was like that and I want to retain primarily the same feel. It's still fun, which is the entire point. It's never really pitifully easy, so... If you could present a more detailed case, I would gladly listen. Now, as for it being fairly unchanged... Wtf I don't know how to respond to that. It just... Gets me. I don't know what you mean at all.

Everything Aioria says: Yeah, well. Frankly, I just don't give a damn what you have to say.

It looks monotone and the the BG sucks, try to make something special, maybe ground and trees with evil grins or something and change the look of the tombstones, maybe have them the look as if there is written something in it and don't have them all the same style.

Overall: It isn't really that bad, but it needs a lot of work.

Here are my two cents:

Screen 1: I don't think the overworld looks too bad. From what I se here it appears to be shaped abstractly as opposed to a simple shape like a square. Good. The palette doesn't look bad either, especially if you're going for a gloomy appearance. I just don't think it will go good with the rest of your levels if they're not so gloomy.

Screen 2: Nothing too impressive over here since the Star Road is very similar to that of SMW, other than that, I like that idea you had for opening up the paths on the road.

Screen 3: Not really impressed here. The status bar isn't the best though. The item box looks decent, but the 0 for the bonus star counter is really thin, the "TIME" looks really squashed together, moreso the "T", and the "1" in the time counter seems far away from the other two numbers, probably because your "1" graphics are too small.

Screen 4: I'm in agreement with everyone else that the BG is horrendous, so they've pretty much said everything that had to be said.

There seem to be a lot of... Conflicting opinions regarding the overworld, so...
GoYo: Yeah, it's supposed to be gloomy.

Regarding the second one... Yeah. I don't have anything.

Regarding the third one... I'm going to make an all-purpose statement here saying that the font I used looks quite a bit better when larger and, um, pixellated. And seeing as GoYo was the only one who gave comments about it that were in any way specific... That's the only thing I can really say, since I already said it's both not long and not a level.

EDIT: You know what, screw it. I'm redoing the font... There have been too many complaints.

Regarding the fourth one: XD I get the point already, change the ground on the foreground and completely redo the background
