hi everybody, im new here and ive just got a quick question...

im trying to edit edgars autocrossbow sprite in tile layer pro. i found the sprite by setting the view to snes 3bpp (or something like that) (its address is around 00133b00 or so...), so i know where its at, but my question is, since the palletes are all screwy, how do i know what colors im using? i basically just want to change the colors of the autocrossbow ive found but i have no clue how to do that with the way the palletes are set because i dont know what colors will show up in the game...

any help in this would be extremely appreciated!!!

I believe it is read in a left -> right, top -> bottom method, like English reading. Starts with color 0 going right, then the next row.

At least I think.

But if the question is "how do I know based on his sprite palette," you'll have to find the palette. Try giving Lord J's Sprite Editor a shot and see if that helps.

no im not trying to edit edgars sprite, im trying to edit the autocrossbow sprite, which wouldnt be editable in lord j's editor. i tried tile molester and loaded a pallet from a .zst savestate with edgar using the autocrossbow on screen, but as i cycled thru the available palletes after loading the savestate, i still couldnt find the one thats correct for the autocrossbow...

Hmmm, it's possible that the autocrossbow uses the finger palette. However, I'm not sure this is the place to find the info you seek. Try here, you might have better luck.

If you can't work with the palettes being different, you can always just change them to be the same. Make sure you save the palette file though so you won't have to do it again next time.

Not sure I get your meaning of exactly what you're trying to edit. You say you're trying to edit the sprite, but also say that you just basically want to change the colors. Well, if you're intention is to edit the sprite, you can always just take a screen shot, and enter in the pallete manually, as HyperHacker mentioned. Just use trial and error as far as the order of the colors, doesn't take too long (just use the dropper tool in something like Paint Shop Pro to get the RGB values quickly).

If you're looking to change the colors in the game, then that's a pallete issue, not a sprite issue, in which case Tile Layer Pro's not going to get the job done, but you can use it to help you. Once you get the pallete entered into TLP, use SNESPal to find one of the colors, and then go through the list of results until you find a group of colors that matches the pallete you entered into TLP. Those colors in SNESPal would be what you want to change in order to change the color of the autocrossbow in the game.

sweet, thanks people!

i used tlp to edit the sprite a bit, and as far as the colors, i spent a little time to teach myself how to hex edit a little and im messing with the autocrossbows pallet that way...

but thanks for the help. i may actually go back and try manually setting the pallet in tlp by finding the proper rgb values in paint or something as dark phoenix suggested.

just to shed a little light on what im doing, im chaning the autocrossbow into a pulse rifle. i chnaged the sprite to take the bow out and added a shotgun-esque pump on the front which slides back and forth rapidly as the gun fires. i changed the sound effect to the tek laser sound which sounds nice because it repeats quickly like a machine/laser gun type thing. now i just have to get the pallet right and ill be good to go... not really a huge hack but im new and this is just a starting project to figure stuff out...

The pallete it shows in TLP isn't important. If TLP's default pallete make it too hard to identify the sprites (e.g. I hate how there are two blacks by default, I always make the second black bright red) you could make up a pallete or even use the real one! Although that's painstaking and requires you to figure out the RGB values for each color in the pallete.

Pretty cool idea for a hack though.
